The strikers parading in front of their new and rather commodious headquarters had only recently formed a local of the Western Federation of Miners, the union which had earlier organized the miners at Cobalt in 1906. Note the slogans on the signs which indicate the Ieftish orientation of the union. Their demands were hardly radical - the right to organize and the eight-hour day - but mine owners believed that the miners were "under the domination of irresponsible and mischievous demagogues." The strike, accompanied by violence, shut down some of the smaller mines, but was unsuccessful in affecting the production of the major operators.
