  1. C/C++ Users Journal CD-ROM README File

  3. Notes for All Users
  4.  
  5. The Help system on this disc has been enhanced with valuable information
  6. about searching and other functions.  Please press the Help key (F1), select
  7. the More Information button and then select the Common Questions hypertext
  8. link and examine the information here.  The exact steps are shown below.
  9.  
  10.   1.  Press the F1 key or select the ? icon for help.
  11.   2.  Select the More Information button located at the bottom
  12.       right hand corner of the screen.
  13.   3.  Select the Common Questions hypertext link (hypertext links are
  14.       shown in green text with an underline).
  15.   4.  Select the desired section.
  16.   5.  To return to the rest of the disc, select the Exit Help button
  17.  
  18. In addition to being available directly from the application on this CD-ROM, 
  19. the source code for all issues are also stored as *.zip files in the /bin 
  20. directory at the CD-ROM's root directory. The files are stored in a 
  21. hierarchical structure starting by year and then issue.

  24. Notes for Windows Users
  25.  
  26. To export or print a marked block, you need to use the menu system instead of
  27. the icons.  If you use the icons then the entire article will be exported or
  28. printed.  This is done as follows.
  29.  
  30.   1.  Mark the block you want to print or export.
  31.   2.  Select the File menu with the mouse or the ALT+F keystroke.
  32.   3.  Select the Export or Print command from the File menu.
  33.  
  34. Note -- When printing blocks of text, the entire paragraph (not just
  35.         the marked text) will be printed.
  36.  
  37. If you use this CD-ROM in 1024x768 video mode with only 16 colors, you may
  38. notice that button sizes do not change quite correctly.  This appears to be
  39. an error found in certain video drivers.  If this occurs, please shift to
  40. 1024x768x256 color mode and the problem should go away.
  41.  
  42. If you have a small window or icon overlaying the C/C++ Users Journal CD-ROM
  43. window, such as a clock or resource monitor, this will cause a distorted
  44. display when you scroll the text of an article.  The solution is to position
  45. the window or icon in the menu bar of the C/C++ Users Journal CD-ROM to
  46. prevent it from interfering with the scrolling process.

  49. Notes for DOS Users
  50.  
  51. To export or print a marked block, you need to use the menu system instead of

  56.   2.  Press F10 or click the mouse on the top line of the screen.
  57.   3.  Select the Export or Print command from the File menu.

  62. Due to memory limitations on some DOS systems, the sample search "C*"
  63. (all words beginning with C) may fail on some systems.  If this occurs, we
  64. recommend that you use the Windows version as the Windows version has
  65. additional memory available to it.

  67. If you find that printing under DOS does not have the correct page breaks,
  68. you should check the Total Lines/Page setting on the Page Setup dialog box.
  69. This should be set to the same lines per page as your printer.

  71.   1.  Press F10 or click the mouse on the top line of the screen.
  72.   2.  Select the File menu.
  73.   3.  Select the Page Setup command.
  74.   4.  Set the Total Lines/Page option to match your printer (ex. if your
  75.       printer is set to 60 then set this to 60).
  76.   5.  Select OK to close the dialog box.

  78. What does it mean if my system beeps or fonts disappear?  When this CD-ROM
  79. runs low on memory, it will either beep (in which case you should exit and
  80. come back in) or switch the font display from bitmapped fonts to a courier
  81. font (which saves memory).

  83. Please note that due to memory limitations on DOS systems, the proximity 
  84. and phrase search operators (the :# and the "" operators) are not available
  85. under DOS.  Under Windows these search operators are fully available.

  87. Please note that due to memory limitations, the Narrow Search function 
  88. mentioned in the documentation is not available under DOS.  Instead, the
  89. Narrow Search buttons have been replaced with a New Search button.
  90. Similarly the Previous Search group is not available at all.  If you want
  91. to narrow an existing search under DOS, then select the New Search button
  92. from the Hit List dialog box.  From the list of saved searches, select 
  93. your last search and then add additional terms and operators to narrow
  94. the search.
