  14. Program Name:  ProWrite
  15. Version: 3.1.3.  3.2 is available (according to AmigaWorld), and I will
  16. post an addendum to this review as soon as I recieve it.
  17. Application:  Word Processor
  18. Price: About $170/Canadian funds
  19. Minimum Requirements: 1MB RAM, Kickstart 1.2 or later, 2 disk drives or
  20. a hard drive.  Printer highly recommended.
  21. Test System:  Amiga 500, KS/WB 2.04, 105MB GVP Hard Drive, 3 MB RAM, 1MB
  22. Agnus, Star NX-1000 Rainbow colour printer.

  24. Program Overview:
  25.  
  26. ProWrite is a word processor with a large list of features.
  27. Paraphrasing the box it came in, they are:
  28.  
  29. - type in multiple fonts, sizes, styles, and colours
  30. - import any IFF or HAM picture
  31. - wrap text around pictures
  32. - 2 types of columns
  33. - 100 000 word spell checker and thesaurus
  34. - check spelling as you type
  35. - ARexx support for macros
  36. - undo virtually anything
  37. - search and replace
  38. - sort alphabetically ascending or descending
  39. - document statistics
  40. - keyboard equivalents for most commands
  41. - mix NLQ text of any or multiple fonts and graphics
  42. - colour printer support
  43. - print sideways or across perforations on paper
  44. - print merge
  45. - scale documents
  46. - PostScript support with separate program ProScript
  47. - WYSIWYG display
  48. - Change defaults of all program settings
  49. - Headers and footers
  50. - Title page
  51. - Auto page numbering, date text support
  52. - Up to 10 documents open at once, document size limited by RAM
  53. - ASCII import and export
  54. - Not copy protected

  59. It is fairly fast, and is solid as a rock.  It opens on any screen type
  60. that you specify, and can also open on the Workbench screen.  It is a
  61. powerful program, great for typing up school reports and the like.
  62.  
  63. Problems:
  64.  
  65. New Horizons make one mistake with ProWrite, and that is calling it a
  66. "Pro" program.  The instant that you give yourself that designation, you
  67. put yourself in competition with the other Pro programs for this
  68. platform and others.  In no way does ProWrite compete with programs like
  69. WordPerfect 5.1, or MicroSoft Word.
  70.  
  71. ProWrite is a great home word processor.  It is not a great business
  72. word processor.  Here are some notes as to what is missing or could be
  73. improved:
  74.  
  75. - There is no view document function.  You have a WYSIWYG display, but
  76.   you only see a small portion of the page at once, especially if you use
  77.   print reduction to get a better quality printout.  So you can't get an
  78.   overall view of the page.
  79.  
  80. - You can't automatically centre a page top to bottom.  This makes title
  81.   pages a pain, as you can't get a page overview to see if it is centred
  82.   either.
  83.  
  84. - Graphics are handled incredibly poorly.  If they are going to
  85.   implement graphics, they might as well do it right.  Images are
  86.   dithered as they are loaded, and if you scale an image down you get a
  87.   reduction of resolution on the screen.  This is true of all programs,
  88.   screen representations of graphics never look good (because making
  89.   them look good on screen takes enormous amounts of processor time,
  90.   slowing any program to a crawl).  Unfortunately, ProWrite is truly
  91.   what you see is what you get.  Graphics are not rescaled to the
  92.   printers maximum resolution or colours at print time, the screen
  93.   image is dumped straight to the printer in full lo resolution 8
  94.   colour glory.  Reducing a picture by anything other than an exact
  95.   multiple of 2 results in banding as the dithering is not recalculated
  96.   from the original.
  97.  
  98. - There are no features supporting footnotes, endnotes, tables of
  99.   contents, multiple or chapter title pages, mixing NLQ and Amiga text.
  100.  
  101. - It doesn't use the 2.04 Amiga file requestor.
  102.  
  103. - Gadgets are rendered with a double line flicker producing border,
  104.   instead of the nicer looking and nicer on the eyes 2.04 style
  105.   gadgets.
  106.  
  107. - It doesn't allow you to hide documents and recall them from the view
  108.   menu.
  109.  
  110. - When one document is printing, you can't do anything else with the
  111.   program.  If you launch another copy of the program it opens up on
  112.   the same screen, and you can work on something else.  This requires a
  113.   lot of memory and I believe it uses public screens to do this, so you
  114.   need WB2.04.
  115.  
  116. - The Amiga clipboard device is not supported, so you can't cut and
  117.   paste data between applications or concurrently running copies of
  118.   ProWrite.
  119.  
  120. - You can change screen modes on startup, but you can't change them
  121.   from within the program.
  122.  
  123. - You are restricted to single, 1 1/2 or double spacing.
  124.  
  125. - There is no support for the WB2.04 scalable fonts, you must convert
  126.   them to bitmaps first.
  127.  
  128. - A template is not provided for the function keys, so you must either
  129.   memorize what they do, make your own, or not use them.
  130.  
  131. - They claim wrapping text around graphics is possible, but the only
  132.   way I could find to do this is to adjust the margins around the
  133.   graphic.
  134.  
  135. - There is no option to automatically add Canadian (or European)
  136.   spellings of English words.  The word "colour" is in the dictionary,
  137.   but not "colours".  Same with "centre" and "centred".  These examples
  138.   are from when I tried to spell check this very document.
  139.  
  140. - When spell checking, you can't browse through the dictionary for
  141.   spellings close by in the list.  And the "guess" spelling function
  142.   makes you wait until an entire list of suggestions is compiled,
  143.   rather than giving them to you as it finds them and letting you pick
  144.   one as soon as it finds the one you want.  The Amiga is a
  145.   multitasking machine, and the program should take full advantage of
  146.   this.
  147.  
  148. - There is no timed backup feature.  ProWrite is as solid as a rock, so
  149.   you don't have to worry about it corrupting your data, but other
  150.   programs may crash it.  It is not resistant to power outages either.
  151.   To it's credit, it does automatically save in low memory situations
  152.   if it is unable to open a save requestor.
  153.  
  154. - An excellent manual.  The index could be improved with more
  155.   references (ie, try finding information on changing screen modes
  156.   using the index.  You won't find it under screen, mode, format, or
  157.   resolution).
  158.  
  159. Overall Impression:
  160.  
  161. I was able to come up with a large list of things that could be
  162. improved in ProWrite.  This is only because it is such a great program.
  163. According to magazines I have read, it is the best graphical word
  164. processor for the Amiga (with WordPerfect being the king of text)
  165. today.  It is solid as a rock, and never crashed once during my tests.
  166. The features it does have are well implemented.  It is a dream to use
  167. compared to my previous word processor, Pen Pal.  I was forced to
  168. finally give up on Pen Pal because it crashed once every 2 minutes
  169. under WB 2.04, instead of once every hour.  As it is, it is great for
  170. typing up school reports, letters, and the like (I am a student, and
  171. these are my primary uses for it).  But it lacks the inherent
  172. flexibility of a "professional" program, imposing artificial limits on
  173. things like line spacing, and only allowing one title page (a title
  174. page being a page without the headers or footers appearing).
  175.  
  176. There are also many features under 2.04 that I would like to see
  177. supported, like the clipboard device and standardized file requestors.
  178. The gadgets used make working in interlaced mode a virtual impossibility
  179. without a flicker fixer, as they contain a horizontal line pattern
  180. across the top, causing major flicker.  The embossed look of 2.04 would
  181. look more professional, be consistent with the "new look", and help
  182. reduce the flicker.
