  80. SPECIAL HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

  82.     HARDWARE
  83.  
  84.         An 'XA' compliant CD-ROM-drive is required to read a Photo
  85.         CD, although the software does not require one. If you move
  86.         the Photo CD data files to a different medium (such as your
  87.         hard disk) PhotoworX will treat it just as the original CD as
  88.         long as the directory structure is left intact.
  89.  
  90.         2 MB RAM required.  The more, the better.
  91.  
  92.         A hard drive is recommended but not required.
  93.         Approximately 350 KB disk space is needed for a complete
  94.         installation.
  95.  
  96.         It is possible to run the software from floppy disk, but it
  97.         makes more sense to have a hard drive to increase
  98.         performance, to store exported pictures, etc.
  99.  
  100.         Two versions of the software are supplied:  one for 68000
  101.         and 68010-based systems, and one for faster systems (68020,
  102.         68030, you name it). A faster CPU is not required, but you do
  103.         yourself a favour if you have one. ;-)

  105.         PhotoworX works with any graphics hardware setup, including
  106.         the ECS and AGA chip sets and third party graphics cards
  107.         that offer an Intuition emulation.

  163. INSTALLATION
  164.  
  165.     The Commodore Installer program copies the PhotoworX software to your
  166. hard disk drive, and also installs the AmiCDROM filing system if requested.
  167.

  169. REVIEW
  170.  
  171.     When PhotoworX is started, it opens either a window on the
  172. Workbench, a public screen to support OS3.0 palette sharing, or its own
  173. screen, whichever you prefer.  This choice is made via tooltypes or the
  174. program's saved settings.  The settings can be adjusted, loaded and saved in
  175. PhotoworX.  PhotoworX distinguishes the general settings for the programs's
  176. operation from the special settings for the 'currently loaded' or the
  177. 'to-be-loaded' Photo.
  178.  
  179.     The general settings let you define the following items:
  180.  
  181.     - Photo CD Volume to be used:
  182.       You can enter or select (via standard ASL file requester) which
  183.       device or volume is to be used by PhotoworX.  So, PhotoworX does
  184.       not necessarily need a Photo CD:  it needs just the correct Photo
  185.       CD directory structure as defined by Kodak:
  186.

  194.       Note: this directory structure is required only if you wish to
  195.         load and display the Photo CD image directory (also called
  196.         'contact sheet' or 'index print'). You can still load single
  197.         photos using the file requester.

  199.     - Path to store pictures:
  200.       You can enter or select via file requester the path to store
  201.       exported pictures.
  202.  
  203.     - Define the program startup operation: 
  204.       Load the contact sheet, a photo, or just wait for user input.
  205.  
  206.     - Define the contact sheet settings:
  207.       - Size, either 32x48, 64x96 or 128x192 pixels.
  208.       - Colour or Grayscale display.
  209.       - Layout (number of columns and colours).
  210.  
  211.     - Define the screen settings:
  212.       - Select a non-HAM screenmode from the display database.
  213.       - Select a font and size for PhotoworX's windows and requesters:
  214.         very useful for higher resolution screens on graphic boards, etc.
  215.  
  216.     - Miscellaneous settings:
  217.       - File format of photos to save (all IFF-ILBM):
  218.         - 24 bit, true colour data.
  219.         -  8 bit, grayscale data.
  220.         - Processed screen data as shown, or
  221.         - 2...256 colour data,
  222.         both in available amiga screenmodes
  223.         from LoRes - SuperHiRes-Interlaced,
  224.         in HAM or HAM8 and with/without Floyd-Steinberg-dithering.
  225.  
  226.       - Viewers: Picasso II, Retina, EGS, DCTV or HAM.
  227.  
  228.         According to the capabilities of the viewer or the graphics
  229.         extension, the number of colours may be chosen.  For example,
  230.         the Picasso II and Retina viewers support 32,768, 65,536 and
  231.         16,777,216 colour displays.  PhotoworX makes use of the Amiga
  232.         HAM mode also through a viewer module with 4,096 colours on an
  233.         OCS/ECS-Amiga, or 262,144 colours on an AGA-equipped Amiga.
  234.         Because viewers can be used only for display purposes, editing
  235.         in HAM, HiColor or TrueColour modes is not supported.
  236.  
  237.     You can also select whether PhotoworX should operate with or without
  238. confirmatory requesters for potentially destructive operations.
  239.  
  240.     The Photo-specific settings let you define the following items:
  241.  
  242.     - Define the screen settings for the Photo display:
  243.       - Select a non HAM screenmode and its colour depth from the
  244.         display database for an editable view of the Photo.
  245.       - Select the size to be loaded:
  246.         128x192, 256x384, 512x768, 1024x1536 or even 2048x3072 pixels.
  247.         The possible size directly depends on the available RAM, because
  248.         a picture in the highest possible resolution means 18 MB of raw
  249.         24-bit-data.
  250.  
  251.         To make this clear:
  252.         Sorry folks, on an A500 with 1 MB RAM, there is NO WAY to load
  253.         these beasties.  Even sufficiently equipped Amigas are busy for
  254.         a quite a while when 18 MB must be transported from a rather
  255.         slow CD-
