  84.     The PhonePak is for single line applications, but you can put 
  85.     in as many PhonePaks as you have slots and phone lines for. The
  86.     PhonePaks can share the 'Mail Boxes' you create between them.
  87.  
  88.     It is compatible with the Public Switched Telephone Network,
  89.     Centrex, and PBX.  DTMF (Touch-Tone) service is required.

  91.     An accelerator is not needed, even if you fill the machine with
  92.     PhonePaks, unless you operate with voice compression turned on.
  93.     FAX conversion will be slow without an accelerator.

  98.     The nearly 200-page, wire-bound manual starts with voice mail
  99.     etiquette, and walks you through the setup of several example
  100.     applications, from use of PhonePak as an answering machine, to
  101.     a product information system with the ability to FAX back
  102.     literature on the same call.
  103.  
  104.     The remainder of the manual is a reference to the commands and
  105.     options available for each of the programs, along with step by
  106.     step mini-tutorials for most functions.

  108.     There is a table of contents, an index, menu summary, IFF FAXX
  109.     format specification, and more.

  111.     There is a lot of detail in the manual, and it is easy to miss
  112.     a subtle reference or instruction, so read carefully.

  115. HARDWARE
  116.  
  117.     PhonePak is a Zorro II AutoConfig full size card. 
  118.  
  119.     It has two RCA connectors, a line-in (digitizing), and a line-
  120.     out (audio monitor), and two RJ-11 telephone jacks, one to the
  121.     phone line, and the other for a local telephone.
  122.  
  123.     It uses a Yamaha YTM-401 voice-FAX chip.
  124.  
  125.     There is one jumper to be set if you are using the PhonePak on
  126.     a PBX system. There is an undocumented 16 pin header and two
  127.     RESERVED jumpers.

  130. SOFTWARE
  131.  
  132.     The PhonePak software comes on two disks, one containing the
  133.     programs, and the other with prepared messages.
  134.  
  135.     Commodores' standard installer program is used.
  136.  
  137.     There are several programs that make up 'PhonePak VFX':
  138.  
  139.     * LineMan (60k)  This is the program that must be running for
  140.      PhonePak (the hardware) to answer or make calls, or to send
  141.      and receive FAXes.
  142.  
  143.      It automatically determines if you have more than one PhonePak
  144.      board installed, so you can set options for each line
  145.      independently.
  146.  
  147.       LineMan opens a small window on your Workbench screen.  The
  148.      configurations that are made with it are: number of rings
  149.      before answer, Auto FAX Detect on-off, audio monitor on-off,
  150.      voice compression enable.
  151.  
  152.      LineMan also passes DTMF tones detected to an ARexx port,
  153.      depending on which mail box the caller is in.
  154.  
  155.     * PhonePak (300k)  This is the program where you setup and
  156.      maintain  mail boxes, groups of mail boxes (Systems), record
  157.      and playback voice and FAX messages (you can do this remotely
  158.      of course), and schedule sending FAXes.
  159.  
  160.      The PhonePak program opens on its own 8 color screen, has an
  161.      integrated telephone database, and can also open another
  162.      screen called 'Switchboard', where you see which mail boxes
  163.      have new messages, and can check a mail box 'in' or 'out'.
  164.      This determines how a call to that box gets handled.
  165.  
  166.      PhonePak has an ARexx port, with a dozen functions available,
  167.      and its own script language, 'Operator', which also can be
  168.      executed through ARexx.

  170.     * PPakFAX (41k)  This is the program/printer driver to
  171.      intercept printouts from other applications for conversion to
  172.      FAX.
  173.  
  174.     * PPakMonitor (8k)  When you start this program, it opens a
  175.      window and displays events detected by the PhonePak, like RING
  176.      and which DTMF tones are entered.  The manual does not say
  177.      much about this, other than its being a troubleshooting program,
  178.      but I could see this program's output being redirected, or
  179.      piped to another program for various purposes.

  181.     * ShowMode (3k)  This allows you to operate the PhonePak
  182.      hardware 'locally' without being connected to the phone line.
  183.      This is for demoing and testing.
  184.  
  185.     All of these programs can be run from the Workbench or CLI, and
  186.     have various options that can be set by command line or via
  187.     ToolTypes in the icons.  Both LineMan and PhonePak have on-line
  188.     help, by pressing the 'Help' key.

  191. FEATURES
  192.  
  193.     AUDIO:
  194.  
  195.      The PhonePak records and plays back standard IFF sounds at
  196.      9600 8 bit samples per second.  You can also record from an
  197.      attached telephone, but the quality is better using the line-in.
  198.  
  199.      The IFF playback is fixed at the 9600 samples/sec speed, so
  200.      imported sound files must be converted to this rate.  I also
  201.      own a GVP DSS-8, and this software has a resampler.  It would
  202.      be a good idea for GVP to include a sound editor program, as
  203.      the PhonePak software does not allow you to edit your
  204.      samples.  You must either get it right, or record it again,
  205.      just like a standard answering machine.
  206.  
  207.      The monitor jack is to monitor incoming calls, can be turned 
  208.       off with LineMan, and this can be overridden via an 'Operator'
  209.      script.

  211.          The Amiga's left audio channel is used for playback of
  212.      messages, and PhonePak does not tie up the audio device when
  213.      not in use.  I ran NComm (which does tie up a channel), DSS-8,
  214.      and played back messages with PhonePak, all at the same time,
  215.      with no conflicts.
  216.  
  217.      You can also play back audio messages on the local phones'
  218.      handset.
  219.  
  220.       Incoming voice messages take 10 megs per 17 minutes, or 34
  221.      minutes with compression.  Each PhonePak board only needs to
  222.      transfer data to or from the hard drive at the rate of 48k per
  223.      second.

  225.     FAX:
  226.  
  227.       The FAX portion of the hardware is Group III compatible, 
  228.      send-receive 9600, fall back to 2400, with optional auto FAX
  229.      detection. 
  230.  
  231.      The software portion allows you to:
  232.      * Send-Receive standard and fine mode FAXes, with 1D and 2D
  233.        (MH, MR) compression.
  234.      * Convert ASCII text files, with your choice of font, to a FAX
  235.          format file.  A couple of fonts are included.
  236.      * Convert IFF graphics to a FAX format file
  237.      * 'Print to FAX' from any application (DTP, WP, Paint) through
  238.        the PPakFax printer driver
  239.      * Display FAXes on screen, print to a printer or FAX machine,
  240.        and convert to an IFF graphic file.
  241.      * Use an attached FAX machine as a scanner
  242.  
  243.      FAX file sizes vary widely according to the contents, about
  244.      250 FAX pages per 10 meg of hard disk space.

  246.     MAIL BOXES:
  247.  
  248.      Most voice mail software gives a limit to the number of mail
  249.      boxes you can have, but I couldn't find anything that states
  250.      the limits with PhonePak.  So I finally thought to check the
  251.      maximum route number you assign to get to a mail box.
  252.      That number is 1 Billion.  Yes, that is a 'B'.  A mail box can
  253.      have a route number from 0 - 999999999.  And that is just from
  254.      the 'initial' mail box.  So the real limit will be the size of
  255.      your hard drives.
