  87. REVIEW SCOPE
  88.  
  89.     I have decided to write this review as a summary of where this
  90. product currently stands in development.  The product is quite usable, and
  91. features that are planned for the near future will make it quite complete.
  92. I am not associated with Utilities Unlimited, (except maybe as an
  93. unsolicited beta-tester) and have no financial interests in the product's
  94. success.

  97. OVERVIEW
  98.  
  99.     The Emplant emulator is a hardware/software combination that allows
  100. the use of an 68020/68030 powered Amiga to run an environment almost
  101. identical to that of a MAC II/IIx/IIcx.  (68040 compatibility is
  102. unconfirmed).  The hardware can support Appletalk and a SCSI interface
  103. depending on configuration.  The software currently supports hard drive
  104. support, up to 16-color 640X400 emulation, and it co-exists favorably in the
  105. multitasking environment of AmigaDOS on its own screen.

  108. REQUIREMENTS
  109.  
  110.     The emulator requires MAC II/IIx/IIcx ROMs and System 6.0.5 or
  111. greater.  It currently ships as a Zorro II card for the A2000 or A3000
  112. computers.  A4000 compatiblity is "soon" and an A1200 board is in the
  113. works.  You have the option of using Chip or Fast memory, but I would
  114. suggest using Fast RAM and plan on having A LOT of it.

  117. BACKGROUND
  118.  
  119.     I have been caught up in the Emplant fervor since the product was
  120. first vaporware in early 1992.  Having waited over six months for the product
  121. actually to ship, I had allowed my expectations to become a little overblown.
  122. Hence, when I finally received my Emplant board and associated software
  123. (especially after at least a week of panic that Utilities Unlimited had
  124. closed up and headed south), I was inclined to give up in dispair together
  125. with quite a number of co-patriots in the Usenet community.
  126.  
  127.     Since the Emplant board first shipped, the software has gone through
  128. quite a few changes.  After downloading what must be my 6th or 7th upgrade
  129. from the Utilities Unlimited BBS, I can finally approach the product as a
  130. functioning entity (although not a complete one).  Version 1.7 of the
  131. Emplant MACII software now runs at speeds comparable to a true MAC II.
  132. Although it still lacks sound, Amiga printer support, and a conventional way
  133. of supporting MAC low-density disks, it can now stand as a usable substitute
  134. for the real thing.

  137. PRODUCT SUMMARY

  139. Functional in Emplant version 1.7 software:

  158.          Plus emulator by Readysoft, custom.
  159.     Emplant: Amiga drive compatible, claimed to be faster
  160.          than AMax format, custom.
  161.     MAC (low density): Uses additional hardware called
  162.         SYBIL (sold by Utilities Unlimited) to read
  163.         on Amiga drives.  I've had no luck with SYBIL.

  165.  o    Amiga video supported using a chunky pixel to planer conversion
  166.     program.  This program copies MAC graphics (stored using a
  167.     method incompatible with the current Amiga custom chips to a
  168.     displayable form in an Amiga intuition screen.  Video update
  169.     rate for this conversion can be set by the user from 6 frames
  170.     a second up to 60.  I have found 30-60fps very smooth and have
  171.     not suffered a significant slowdown in MAC system performance.

  175.         4 color (2 bit)    (very fast)
  176.         16 color (4 bit) (slower, but usable even at 60 fps
  177.            video conversion rate)

  179.  o    Multitasks with AmigaDOS; allow a foreground and background priority
  180.     based on whether or not the MAC screen is activated.

  182.  o    Support for 32bit Quickdraw.

  184.  o    System 7.0.1 & 7.1 support (I haven't tested this either)

  186.  o    Appletalk serial support from an AmigaDOS driver, so you can use
  187.     the Appletalk port as a second serial port.
