- CONTENTS OF
- March/April 1994 FreshFish CDROM
-
- This file contains some overview information about the contents of the
- CD-ROM, followed by a concatenation of a bunch of individual Contents
- files on the CD-ROM. Note that not all the material on the CD-ROM
- appears in a Contents file somewhere, so the list of programs found in
- this file is only a subset of what is actually on the CD-ROM. In
- particular, the only detailed contents listed here are for material
- that is "New" with this CD-ROM.
-
- -----------------------
- STRUCTURE OF THE CD-ROM
- -----------------------
-
- The 636 Mb on the CD-ROM is divided into roughly three sections: (1)
- New material, which includes the material from the new unreleased
- floppy disks as well as material which does not appear in the floppy
- distribution, (2) useful utilities that can be used directly off the
- CD-ROM if desired, thus freeing up the corresponding amount of hard
- disk space, and (3) older material from previous released floppy disks
- or CD-ROM's.
-
- The portion of the disk dedicated to new material that I've not
- previously published on a CD-ROM or floppy disk is 59 Mb, broken down
- as follows:
-
- 8 Mb Archived (BBS ready) contents of disks 951-975
- 20 Mb Unarchived (ready-to-run) contents of disks 951-975
-
- 9 Mb Archived "new material" not in floppy distribution
- 22 Mb Unarchived "new material" not in floppy distribution
-
- The portion of the disk dedicated to a bunch of useful tools like GNU
- utilities, TeX with lots of fonts, and other interesting software that will
- be updated for each FreshFish CD-ROM, is 284 Mb, broken down as follows:
-
- 2 Mb Content lists of floppy disks 1-971.
- 6 Mb Content lists (file and CRC lists) of previous CD-ROM's.
- 4 Mb CD-ROM administration files, documentation, etc.
- 4 Mb Reviews of Amiga software and hardware
- 4 Mb Full BSD source for supplied BSD executables.
- 4 Mb AmigaGuide versions of GNU "info" files.
- 6 Mb CBM header files, libraries, and developer tools.
- 3 Mb Binary executables, libraries, and other "runtime" things.
- 27 Mb Misc useful tools, libraries, etc.
- 33 Mb PasTeX source, fonts, binaries, etc.
- 39 Mb GNU binaries, libraries, and other "runtime" things.
- 152 Mb Full GNU source for supplied GNU executables.
-
- The portion of the disk dedicated to old material is 293 Mb, broken
- down as follows:
-
- 12 Mb Archived (BBS ready) contents of material from Oct
- FreshFish CD-ROM that was not in floppy distribution.
- 22 Mb Archived (BBS ready) contents of material from Dec
- FreshFish CD-ROM that was not in floppy distribution.
- 27 Mb Unarchived contents of material from Oct FreshFish CD-ROM
- that was not included in the floppy distribution.
- 57 Mb Unarchived contents of material from Dec FreshFish CD-ROM
- that was not included in the floppy distribution.
- 175 Mb Archived (BBS ready) contents of floppy disks 600-975.

- GNU CODE
- --------
-
- Here are the current GNU distributions which are included in both source
- and binary form. In most cases, they are the very latest distributions
- ftp'd directly from the FSF machines and compiled with the version of gcc
- included on this CD-ROM. I have personally compiled all of the GNU
- binaries supplied on this CD-ROM, to verify that the compiler is solid and
- that the binaries are in fact recreatable from the supplied source code.

- PFS 6.11 Professional filing system for the Amiga
-
- The standard AmigaDos filesystem (OFS) is very slow. Commodore has
- tried to improve the performance of their filesystem a number of
- times. Workbench 2.0 added the fast filing system (FFS), and now,
- with Workbench 3.0, we have the fast filing system with directory
- caching (FFS-DC). This makes directoryscan faster but writing to
- disk and directory-operations like delete and rename are slower than
- ever. This made me decide to write a filesystem that does better.
- I used all the knowledge I gained from my computer science study to
- make it as good as possible. The professional filing system (PFS)
- has the following features: High performance, write: 2-3 times faster
- read: 50% faster; directoryscan: 10-20 times FFS, 3 times FFS-DC;
- delete/rename/protect etc: 10-20 times faster; Other features:
- full AmigaDos compatibility; upto 10% more data on a disk; better
- faulttolerance; parallel access almost without performance loss;
- disks NEVER get invalidated. This version of the filesystem is for
- floppy disks only. Both double density and high density disks are
- supported. A version suitable for harddisks is being worked on and
- will be available to registered users only.

- TextPlus 5.01 TeX frontend, needs PasTeX or AmigaTeX
-
- TeXt Plus Professional is a TeX frontend word processor. TeX is a
- professional freeware typesetting programm. The greatest problem of
- TeX for the average user was - up to now - TeX's complexity and the
- resulting difficulty to fast and efficiently create documents. This is
- where TPP starts to work.
-
- Now you just have to load a form sheet, which has to be modified at
- the respective places only. After this the file is compiled to a TeX-
- file by TPP, which then itself is processed by the TeX compiler. After
- both compilations either the previewer or the printer driver can be
- invoked.
-
- TPP cooperates with PasTeX, the freeware Amiga implementation of TeX
- written by Georg Hessmann, and with AmigaTeX ((c) Radical Eye
- Software). Among TPP's features are tables, staggered lists,
- mailmerge, footnotes, inclusion of graphics, an ARexx-port (122
- commands) and full OS2.xx/3.xx compatibility. You can make use of all
- functions of TeX, even if they are not supported directly, e. g. there
- is no editor for mathematical formulae, yet.
-

- in order to open the world of TeX to a totally new group of users.

- ACE 2.0 FreeWare Amiga BASIC compiler + extras
-
- ACE is a FreeWare Amiga BASIC compiler which, in conjunction with A68K
- and Blink produces standalone executables.
-
- The language defines a large subset of AmigaBASIC but also has many
- features not found in the latter such as: turtle graphics, recursion,
- SUBs with return values, structures, arguments, include files, a
- better WAVE command which allows for large waveforms, external
- references, named constants and a variety of other commands and
- functions not found in AmigaBASIC.
-
- New features in version 2.0 include: gadgets, three standard requester
- types, serial I/O and menus (with optional command-keys for menu
- items). New commands and functions for this version include EXIT FOR,
- PTAB, SPC, DEF FN, ON ERROR and ERR (these last two handle file and
- serial I/O at present). INPUT and PRINT can now be used transparently
- for all screen/window combinations.
-
- All user-defined windows are now fully-configurable and may be used in
- conjunction with screens as per AmigaBASIC. Window close event
- trapping is also a new feature.
-
- In addition to event trapping, ACE now supports WAITing for both menus
- and gadgets. Waiting is more operating-system-friendly than event
- trapping.
-
- A simple graphical front-end (Integrated Development Environment) is
- also provided with the archive. This is written in ACE.

-
- Flat 1.3 Handler for block-mapped filing devices
-
- A filing system handler which implements block-mapped filing devices
- such as available under Un*x. Read and write calls are mapped to
- low-level system IO operations which allow to treat devices such as
- df0:, dh0:, rad:, etc. as big data files. These `virtual' files can
- be copied, read and written just like any standard AmigaDOS file. It
- is even possible to copy a whole disk with the CLI `Copy' command or
- to archive disks with LhArc and the like. Written as a supplement for
- the Amiga `tar' program.
