If you are about to make a translation of ReqChange, please read the entire
file first. It contains some useful information.
First of all, before you start, check with me to see if someone else have
done/is doing a translation for the language in question. There is no need to
get several translations for one language (I've received FOUR different
Italian translations! :). It is also preferable if I can reach you via e-mail
(fidonet or internet) in case I need a catalog update.
Try to follow Commodores translations, if possible, to get a consistent
environment.
If you wonder about a string, please look in the ReqChange*.cd file first for
any comments, before contacting me.
When making a translated version, please consult other persons! I believe the
result will be better if a few people have a part in the translation rather
than just one (e.g. having another person "proofread" the translation is a
very good idea).
Although the theoretical string limits are rather wide, please check that the
result will look ok. It is preferable if the window fits on screen with fonts
wider than Topaz80, even on 640 pixels wide screens. Thus, you should keep
strings in the window interface rather short. Titles (in windows) should be
kept short too, so that as much as possible will be visible in the title bar.
The window layout code have full support for proportional fonts, and will
adjust itself accordingly.
Don't be afraid to rephrase messages. I've seen some far too straight
translations (english->swedish), and they were not nice... :)
Please refer to the Svenska.ct file for a sugggestion on where you can place
the "<language> translation by" part of the about requester (search for the
string "Svensk översättning av").
Finally, please don't forget to make a translation of the installer script as
well. If you don't know how to write a proper installer script, don't let
that stop you! :) You don't have to make the script "runnable". If you are
about to translate the the string:
(set #bad-kick "You must be using Kickstart 2.04+ to install ReqChange")
Simply write something like this in an empty file
#bad-kick
"<The translation of the string>"
"<Some more text can follow>"
If you split a message like this, remember that the strings will be
concatenated, and thus you might need to have a space (" ") at the end of
some strings (see how the english strings look like). Btw, "\n" equals a line
feed.
Thank you for making the translation! If you're the first one to make a
translation for a language, you don't need to send me any shareware fee. Your
work is enough as payment!
