!!Speaker 1993 version
-=-=-=-=-
by Richard G. Hallas
____________________________________________________
This is a very simple but useful program which is
intended to be kept somewhere handy like the root
directory of a hard disc. It provides a quick and
easy control for the internal speaker(s). Simply
double-click on the icon to toggle the state of
the internal speaker between on and off. The
state of the headphone socket will NOT change.
Each time !!Speaker is run, the screen will be
redrawn so that the icon displays the correct state
of the speaker. The icon will also reflect the
correct state when the directory viewer containing
it is first opened, but since the program does not
run continuously, there is no way to guarantee that
the icon will always be correct, as other programs
may alter the state of the speaker themselves. In
order to make sure the icon is correct, simply run
the application again. (It may be necessary to
repeat this if you leave the speaker in the wrong
state.)
Notes
-----
In case of confusion, the application's icon is
meant to be read as: "Turn speaker ON" and "Turn
speaker OFF". These direct commands will be obeyed
each time you run the application.
This version of !!Speaker has been improved for
users of RISC OS 3, and sprites are provided for
multisync and hi-res mono modes. Users of RISC OS 2
will simply not see these, but otherwise the program
will work in exactly the same way on both operating
systems. The correct sprites to use in any given
situation are chosen by the (RISC OS 3) operating
system.
RISC OS 3 users can happily run !!Speaker from the
Pinboard. It should also work from other sticky
backdrop applications.
Some of the newer Acorn RISC machines (such as the
A3010) have internal speakers which are turned off
automatically when headphones are plugged into the
socket, and which turn on again when the headphones
are removed. On such machines it is impossible to
control the internal speaker independently of the
headphones (the *SPEAKER command doesn't work), so
this program is useless on such machines. Sorry.
