ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name : RestoreBD
Version : 1.00 (25 Jun 1996)
Purpose : Restore default backdrop
Author : © Andrew Berry, 1996
Licence : Freeware. Please see conditions at the end of this file.
RestoreBD supports Interactive Help.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
• Remove your backdrop or replace it with another.
• Click on the RestoreBD icon on the icon bar and your original backdrop
(as configured with NewLook or Configure) will be instantly reloaded.
PURPOSE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are now many programs available which aim to provide alternative
backdrops to those provided by Acorn. This is no bad thing, and there are
some very impressive examples in the public domain. However, there are also
a number of programs which load the most garish, colourful and totally-out-
of-place-on-your-nice-smart-desktop backdrops which you want to remove
immediately.
Using this program, you can load the backdrop which you configured using
NewLook (RISC OS 3.1) or the configure application (RISC OS 3.5 and 3.6)
just by clicking on the icon bar. This avoids the need to search through
the NewLook application or (even worse) the !Boot application in order to
find the configured backdrop sprite file.
USING
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have RISC OS 3.5 or 3.6 then no setting up is necessary in order
to use this program. The program loads in the normal way, and clicking
on the icon bar will cause the default backdrop (as selected with the
Configure application) to be reloaded. Please note that this program has
not been tested on RISC OS 3.5 (only 3.6) and so is not guaranteed to work.
If there are any problems, please let me know.
Under RISC OS 3.1, the pathname of your NewLook application must be set
before the program can be used. The first time you load the program, an
error will be given stating that the options could not be read. If you
have already loaded NewLook beforehand then an option will be given to
set the pathname for you. Just select OK and then click on the Save icon
of the window which opens (the NewLook pathname is displayed for you to
confirm or change it). If NewLook hasn't already been loaded then RestoreBD
will load but you will then have to set the NewLook pathname yourself.
To do this, click Menu on the RestoreBD icon on the icon bar, and select
the option ‘NewLook...’. A window will open which shows the current
NewLook pathname (probably unset at this stage). To set the NewLook
pathname drag your NewLook application from its usual place (hard disc,
boot disc, etc) into the window, and the pathname will be entered for you.
Clicking on ‘Read <NewLook$Dir>’ will enter the pathname for you, providing
the NewLook application has been run. Note that if you subsequently move
NewLook into a different directory on your hard/boot disc then the
information in this window will need to be updated in order for the program
to work.
Once the pathname has been set, click on Save and you won't need to use
that window again unless you move NewLook. You can now use the program in
the same way as under RISC OS 3.5 and 3.6. Clicking on the icon bar will
cause the default backdrop (as selected by NewLook) to be reloaded.
