Power Control Version 1.00
© Paul Wilkinson 1994
About !PowerCtrl
================
N.B. !PowerCtrl requires RiscOS 3.1 or later to run.
If the noise from your hard drive gets on your nerves, this is the program for
you! Although Acorn doesn't use the ADFS_PowerControl system on any computer
but the A4, many of its machines have compatible hard discs.
This program functions in two ways. Firstly, the hard disc can be spun up and
down as desired by clicking with 'select' on the icon. There is a configurable
minimum time between these operations to avoid undue stress on the disc motor.
If you click again before this time has elapsed, the hourglass will be displayed
(note that you can still use the mouse as normal during this phase).
Secondly, if CMOS byte 26 is set to a non-zero value, the hard disc will
automatically spin down after a certain period of inactivity. On my system
(RiscPC with a 210Mb hard drive) the rule for working out this delay is simply
five seconds times the value of the byte, with a minimum delay of one minute.
To set this delay, click with 'adjust' on the icon. I have made it impossible
to set a delay of less than one minute as this would be pointless amyway. Note
that a Ctrl-Break (or if the delay has been reset to zero, ie off, a complete
power-on) is required before any changes to byte 26 take effect. If the
relation between the delay and the value of byte 26 is different on your
machine, please let me know.
The entries on the menu are:-
Info Obvious.
Delay Enter motor protection delay in seconds.
Quit Obvious.
To use this program your hard disc must be controlled by the ADFS and support
time-outs. If it doesn't your machine will hang, and you'll know you can't use
it!
That's about it, I hope you find !PowerCtrl useful.
