- Introduction...
-
- Libellus is a utility to encode/decode files. Each file can be scrambled
- up to 10 times. It can currently cope with files up to 100k in size, and
- requires 448K of memory.
- The filetype and original filename are stored in the encoding (which is
- filetyped as Data), so that when you decode it the filetype and filename (if
- you want to keep it) are restored. This means that you can send encoded
- files to people down telephone lines, through the post or via PC's, and be
- sure that when the other person decodes the file, they will know what type
- of file it is (eg. document, music, sample, drawfile).
-
- Encoding files...
-
- To encode a file drag in onto the iconbar icon. You can use any filetype
- (even ones with no icons and are represented by white squares), except for
- Data files. If you drag one of these onto the icon, the program will assume
- it is to be decoded.
- A window will appear allowing you to choose the number of keys, and type
- them in. Each key is used to scramble the file once, so if you enter five
- keys, the file will be scrambled five times. A key consists of a string of
- characters (up to a maximum of eight), eg: 'Q#64Vtj£' or 'Computer'. Due
- to the way the program works, it would be best if that if you are using
- more than one key, you make sure they are all different. To decode the file
- successfully, the keys have to be exactly the same as the ones used for the
- encoding. They must also be in the same order.
- When you have entered to keys, press Return, or click on OK. The usual
- save box will appear. Note: the number at the end of the default filename
- increments automatically.
-
- Decoding files...
-
- To decode a file, drag it onto the iconbar icon. It must be filetyped as
- Data, and be a previously encoded file. Enter the keys into the window and
- click on OK. A save box will appear, with the original icon and the original
- filename entered into the box. Note: if you get the keys wrong the file will
- be encoded again.
-
- Demonstration...
-
- If you open up the Libellus application directory (hold down Shift and
- double-click on the icon), you will see a directory entitled 'Example'. Open
- this and you will find an encoded file. Load up Libellus and drag the file
- onto the icon. Select one key, and enter 'COMPUTER'. Click on OK and you
- will find that it is an encoded version of the Templates file. Drag to a
- filer window, and you can then load it into a template editor. Try loading
- the encoded version into a template editor (save any data first!).

- Important notice
- ----------------
-
- The author nor the PD library cannot be held responsible for any loss of
- Data caused by this program. As long as the keys are entered carefully, you
- should have no problems. I would strongly recommend that you always make
- backups of vital files.
