  1. ReadMe file for the International Keyboard Handler Generator vn 2.08

  5. The !IKHG (International Keyboard Handler Generator) application has been
  6. produced as a route by which users and others - mainly international
  7. distributors - can re-map the keyboard layout to produce keyboards suitable
  8. for use with languages other than English. Refer to the User Guide and the
  9. RISC OS Programmer's Reference Manual for more general information.

  11. Simply double-click the application icon in the usual way; in response to
  12. the question "For what country is the module to be created?" you must enter
  13. a country name 'known about' by the International module you are using. RISC
  14. OS 2.00 (International module 1.13) knows about the following 'countries':-

  16. Default UK      Master  Compact Italy   Spain   France  Germany Portugal       
  17. Esperanto       Greece  Sweden  Finland Denmark Norway  Iceland Canada1
  18. Canada2 Canada  ISO1

  20.    Additionally, the International module 1.14 also knows about Russia and
  21.    Russia2 (Russia2 uses the 'IBM Russian' character set) and provides the
  22.    ISO8859 Cyrillic alphabet and the IBM Cyrillic alphabet. International
  23.    module version 1.14 is RMEnsured by !IKHG version 2.07 and later, and
  24.    should therefore also be RMEnsured when using InternationalKeyboard
  25.    modules produced with this version of !IKHG.

  27. Follow the instructions given by the on-screen help text produced by the
  28. program. The InternationalKeyboard module(s) produced by the program can be
  29. soft-loaded and will replace the corresponding ROM module in the normal way.
  30. Shift-Escape will usefully abandon the program entirely (but any changes
  31. will be lost); Escape leaves the mapping portion, and enters the compiling
  32. phase (which is uninterruptible). !IKHG needs 768k to run.

  34. A note of guidance - don't re-invent the wheel. If the PC world has already
  35. adopted a particular National layout don't invent a different one, no matter
  36. how poor you think the apparent de facto standard one might be; produce a
  37. 'pure' superset if you need ready access to additional characters, and try
  38. to follow a logical sequence if you do expand the repertoire. Also, bear in
  39. mind that future keyboards may have the "104th" key added (immediately to
  40. the right of the left-hand shift key); for countries which would normally
  41. have this key, it is suggested that it is programmed both in 'position 104'
  42. and e.g. the '¤£' key (immediately to the left of the backspace/delete key).

  44. This software may be copied freely for use with any computer system
  45. containing the RISC Operating System ("RISC OS") but it may not be altered
  46. in any way or sold without the express written permission of Acorn Computers
  47. Limited ("Acorn"). If this software is copied it must be copied complete
  48. with all its associated files including this ReadMe file. The modules
  49. created by this software may be separately copied freely for use on any
  50. computer system containing RISC OS but may not be sold without the express
  51. written permission of Acorn.
