  4. Birthday supports Acorns interactive help. Load !Help and slide over the various icons for additional information.

  6. What Is Birthday?
  7. -----------------
  8. Birthday allows you to produce an A4 sized poster to celebrate a persons
  9. birthdate. The poster contains:
  10.  
  11. * Information about famous people who share the same birthdate
  12. * Events through history that happened on that day
  13. * Songs & films which were released the year the person was born
  14. * Sporting events that took place the year the person was born
  15. * A horoscope
  16.  
  17. While Birthday looks after the overall layout, you can alter fonts, order
  18. of information and backround graphic.
  19.  
  20. This demonstration version contains all the features of the full program
  21. except that the words 'demonstration version' appears on the print-out.

  23. Using Birthday
  24. --------------
  25. The best way to learn is in conjunction with Acorns !Help, as this will
  26. explain the basic function of the icons.
  27.  
  28. To get started, simply enter the persons details and then click on the
  29. 'Update' button. A mini preview of the final poster appears in the
  30. document section; the scale in the document section can't be changed. If you
  31. want a larger view you must select the menu option 'Open View...'
  32.  
  33. NB To see any changes (eg order) you must click on 'Update'.
  34.  
  35. Other menu options
  36. ------------------
  37. Randomise layout - selects different items from the main database. Even
  38. though the same personal data is being used, the display will look different.
  39.  
  40. Save as default - selecting this means that next time you load Birthday it
  41. will start with the settings and layout you currently have. To cancel this
  42. locate the file called AZfault (within the main Birthday directory) and
  43. delete it.
  44.  
  45. Save as text - exports the data as ASCII text so that you can use it in
  46. your DTP/word processor. NOT SUPPORTED IN DEMO!
  47.  
  48. Borders
  49. -------
  50. The border is simply a draw file. To use your own border draw file simply
  51. drag and drop on the main window.
  52.  
  53. Registering
  54. -----------
  55. The full version costs 10.99 and not only includes Birthday, but many
  56. borders, an editor to change the main database and the application Today.
  57. Today takes the current date (or allows you to enter a specific date) rather than a birthdate, thus you could use it for a wedding anniversary etc.

  89. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  90. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  91. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. A catalogue is also available upon request.

  93. Geography:
  94. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  95.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  96.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  97.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  98.   & Africa.
  99. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  100.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  101.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  102. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  103.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  104. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  105.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  106. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  107.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  108.  
  109. Science:
  110. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  111.   against the clock.
  112. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  113.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  114.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  115.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  116. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  117.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  118.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  119.   different each time they are printed.
  120. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  121.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  122.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  123.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  124.   also be produced.
  125. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  126. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  127.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  128. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  129.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  130. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  131.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  133. Word Puzzles:
  134. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  135.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  136. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  137.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  138.   on screen
  139. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  140.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  141. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  142.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  143. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  144.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  145. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  146. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  147. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  148.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  149.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  150.   printed.

  152. Picture Puzzles:
  153. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  154.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  155.   range of abilities.
  156. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  157.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  158.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  159.   levels.
  160. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  161.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  162. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  163.   or columns into their correct positions.
  164.  
  165. Miscellaneous:
  166. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  167.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  168. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  169.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  170.   your own tests.
  171. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  172.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  173. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  174.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  175. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  176.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the
