Document with !ArcDoor
!ArcDoor is a small program that allows you start an application when
a modem-connection has been established. It just sits on the iconbar and
awaits an incoming call. When a call is detected, !ArcDoor will answer it
after a pre-set number of rings, and will start a (comms) application as
soon as a connection is made. Whilst this application is active, !ArcDoor
will no longer look for incoming calls (as you would expect!). It's only
when the !ArcDoor-started application finishes that !ArcDoor will again
start awaiting calls.
To tell !ArcDoor which application to start when receiving a call, just drag
the application's icon (from a filer) onto the !ArcDoor icon (on the
iconbar). Alternatively, you can click on the !ArcDoor icon to bring up a
window in which you can type the 'Run Path' for the application. Here, you
can also enter some parameters that must be passed to the application via
the command-line string (if this should prove necessary). Note that every
occurence of <BAUD> in the parameter-string is substituted by the actual
baudrate at which a connection was made!
You can also enter the number of incoming rings before answering a call, and
a seperate option allows you to toggle the 'Beep on ring' mode. When turned
on, this option will cause the Arc to beep when the modem rings.
Because some applications may take a few seconds to load (before handing
control back to the Task Manager), it is possible to change this
number of seconds in the !ArcDoor window. This number of seconds (the
default being 5) must span a greater time than the time it takes to load
the application. Normally, you'll never have to change the default 5
seconds! The 'Start Time' icon handles this feature.
Another fix-feature of !ArcDoor allows you to cope with slow modems as well
as fast ones. Some modems just can't keep up with sending bytes when the
Arc is querying for them, therefore you can specify a delay
(in centi-seconds) between each byte queried for. See the 'Byte Delay' icon
for this feature.
There's also a 'Modem Cmd' and a 'Modem Reply' icon for a quick check at
the modem's responses. Just enter a Hayes-compatible command in the
'Modem Cmd' icon, and the result will be shown in the 'Modem Reply' icon!
To make !ArcDoor start up with the defaults of your choice, make sure the
program is configured to your liking, and select 'Save' from the icon-menu.
!ArcDoor is public domain. Please don't modify the files contained within
the !ArcDoor directory.
