- 1. What and who is this service for?
- ====================================
-
- This is only for use by Demon Internet customers. Batch ftp allows
- you to request via email a file on a remote host to be ftp'd to a
- home directory on our ftp server. You can then download it. This has
- advantages for you: slow links can be avoided; getting files
- recommended by others can be done "offline" without you having to remember
- complex ftp site names and directory paths as these can be simply copied
- into the body of a mail message.
-
- When the ftp has finished, a mail message is sent indicating the success
- or failure of the ftp.
-
-
- 2. Sending Requests
- ===================
-
- To make a batch ftp request, send mail to ftp@demon.co.uk. The
- message body should contain one or more lines of the form:
-
- <ftp server name>:<full path to file>
-
- You can end this list with the keyword "quit". If this is omitted,
- processing will stop either at the signature separator "-- " or at the
- end of file.
-
- For example:
-
- ftp.demon.co.uk:/pub/doc/Services.txt
- ftp.demon.co.uk:/pub/doc/Modem.txt
- ftp.demon.co.uk:/pub/doc/support.faq
- src.doc.ic.ac.uk:/README
- quit
-
- When the files have been obtained, you will be sent mail containing a
- transcript of the ftp session (if the file was not already available
- locally) and notification of which files are available for you to
- retrieve.
-
-
- 3. Retrieving Files
- ===================
-
- When you have received mail telling you that the files are available
- for you to download, make an ftp connection to ftp.demon.co.uk. Log
- in with your Demon Internet host name and login password. The files
- will be available in your current working directory.
-
- Please note that this is not the same login method as the one you use
- when logging in for anonymous ftp. If your host name is
- "host.demon.co.uk" then you should enter "host" at the ftp login prompt
- and your PPP or SLIP password at the ftp password prompt. If you have
- forgotten your PPP or SLIP password, you can find it by looking at your
- dialer login script.
-
- Some packages allow you to specify a default directory when you log in
- to an ftp server. For instance, Fetch on the Mac when shipped from us
- has ftp.demon.co.uk set to /pub/mac. When logging on to collect your
- files, delete this default directory so that it is blank. You will
- then be placed in your home directory.
-
- Also note that until you successfully use Batch ftp for the first time,
- your directory will not be created so you won't be able to log in. You
- are not missing out on anything so don't be concerned!
-
- When we get the files we will use binary mode. This means that no conversion
- to the file is done. When you download the file from us you will use
- ftp - at this time you should specify ascii or binary as appropriate.
-
-
- 4. Local commands
- =================
-
- Local commands affect the files in your download directory on
- ftp.demon.co.uk. These commands start with an asterisk ("*")
- character in the leftmost column in order to distinguish them from
- download specifications.
-
- As with batchftp requests, local commands are executed by sending them
- as email to ftp@demon.co.uk.
-
- There is currently only one local command - "*delete <file name>".
- This allows you to delete files from your download directory without
- waiting for them to be expired automatically.
-
- For example:
-
- *delete Services.txt
- *delete Modem.txt
-
- Local commands may be interspersed with download commands. There is
- no need to send them in a separate message.
-
-
- 5. Limitations and common problems
- ==================================
-
- Files obtained using this facility will be deleted from
- ftp.demon.co.uk after fourteen days. Please make sure that you
- download your files before this period expires.
-
- If you try to retrieve a file and it fails owing to an inability
- to log in to a server, it may be that the server does not conform
- to the Internet standard or login anonynous and password email address.
- There is nothing we can sensibly do about this unless we are to maintain
- a table of exceptions which we do not. You will therefore have to use
- ftp in real time to retrieve the file.
-
- There are currently no limitations as to the quantity and size of files
- which you may get using Batch ftp.
-
- This facility is restricted to Demon Internet customers. If a Demon
- Internet customer wants to send a request from a non-Demon Internet
- mail address, he or she should make sure that the request's
- "Reply-To:" line contains their Demon Internet email address.
-
- This also applies to those of you who use our Mail Forwarding service.
- As yourname.co.uk is not a demon.co.uk address the server will reject
- your request. If you simply set your Reply-To: address to
- yourname.demon.co.uk then it will work. We will try to get round this
- at some point in the future but no timescale is yet available for
- this fix. Note that your mail domain (yourname.co.uk) does not always
- have the same first part as your demon domain (e.g. smiths_bits.co.uk could
- have an account called smibits.demon.co.uk) and it is your demon domain
- that is needed in the Reply-To: field.
-
- There are some servers where the anonymous login we use fails. There is
- nothing we can do about this and you will need to retrieve the files using
- conventional ftp.
-
-
- 6. New features
- ===============
-
- The ability to use any of the standard ftp commands via the script command
- will be added. Also being able to rename files e.g.
-
- get invalid.dosname valid.nam
-
-
- 7. Notes
- ========
-
-
- Please report any batch ftp problems to the demon.ip.support newsgroup,
- NOT to the internet@demon.net email address.
-
-
- The service can have an advantage to us as it probably means you may spend
- less time on a phone line and we also use caching which means that when
- a popular new file comes out we and more than person gets that file via
- Batch ftp we will simply copy it to your home directory to save time.
-
- All batch ftp transactions are logged. If you object to this practice
- then please do not use the batch ftp facility.
-
- Please do not disclose the contents of your download directory to any
- third party. The introduction of a file deletion facility opens up
- the possibility of "Trojan Horse" files being substituted for the
- files you have downloaded if you disclose the names of these files.
- Keep this information to yourself.
-
- Demon Internet Limited will not accept responsibility for any loss or
- damage, consequential or otherwise, incurred through the use of,
- failure to use or inability to use this facility.
