  1.                          Guide for X-Word

  4. This application is shareware - you may evaluate it for 30 days. If you
  5. continue to use it beyond this time then you must register!
  6.  
  7. Both X-Word and Do_Word support Acorns interactive help. You should load
  8. !Help when learning how to use the applications.
  9.  
  10. Introduction
  11. ------------
  12. X-Word allows you to create a crossword based on words and clues that you
  13. supply. You can control the size of the grid used, the fonts and border
  14. display.
  15.  
  16. Using X-Word
  17. ------------
  18. Load in the normal RISC-OS way. The main X-Word display will open, with a
  19. tool pane on the left side. The crossword is created by using the tool pane
  20. icons, the large white area is a mini preview of what the final outcome will
  21. be.

  23. Icons on the tool pane
  24. ----------------------
  25. Load Acorns !Help application for a summary of what the icons do, although
  26. many of them are self evident.
  27.  
  28. Borders
  29. -------
  30. NB. If you are using RISC_OS 2 then you will NOT be able to use borders.
  31.  
  32. Clicking on the Border icon button shows a list of available bordrs. These
  33. are read from the Borders directory with the main X-Word directory. You may
  34. add your own borders to this directory, but they MUST be draw files.
  35.  
  36. If you have a directory of your own with borders you should use the
  37. DIRECTORY PATH icon on the tool pane to set X-Word to scan this directory.

  39. You can, if you are using a single draw file, simply drag and drop the file
  40. onto the main display.
  41.  
  42. Menu Options
  43. ------------
  44. A couple of menu options need explaining:
  45. a) Reset path - if you have changed the Border directory path (see above)
  46.    then selecting this will reset it
  47. b) Save as default - choosing this will cause whatever you have created so
  48.    far will be saved as the default file. Each time you load X-Word it will
  49.    begin with this work already on screen. If you later wish to remove this,
  50.    open the X-Word directory and delete the file called AZfault.

  52. Registration
  53. ------------
  54. The registration fee for X-Word is 7.99 - this will remove the
  55. 'unregistered' windows that pop up. You will also receive Do_Word, an
  56. application allowing you to do your crosswords on screen. To register make
  57. a cheque to M. Smith for 7.99 and print clearly your address as well as who
  58. you want the program to be registered to. Also write the name of the
  59. application on your note (ie X_Word).

  89. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  90. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  91. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3.
  92.  
  93. Geography:
  94. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  95.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  96.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  97.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  98.   & Africa.
  99. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  100.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  101.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  102. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  103.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  104. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  105.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  106. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  107.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  108.  
  109. Science:
  110. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  111.   against the clock.
  112. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  113.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  114.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  115.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  116. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  117.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  118.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  119.   different each time they are printed.
  120. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  121.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  122.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  123.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  124.   also be produced.
  125. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  126. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  127.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  128. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  129.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  130. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  131.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  133. Word Puzzles:
  134. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  135.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  136. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  137.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  138.   on screen
  139. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  140.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  141. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  142.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  143. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  144.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  145. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  146. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  147. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  148.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  149.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  150.   printed.

  152. Picture Puzzles:
  153. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  154.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  155.   range of abilities.
  156. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  157.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  158.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  159.   levels.
  160. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  161.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  162. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  163.   or columns into their correct positions.
  164.  
  165. Miscellaneous:
  166. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  167.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  168. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  169.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  170.   your own tests.
  171. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  172.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  173. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  174.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  175. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  176.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
