  4. Introduction
  5. ------------
  6. Word Tester is a simple little application to test knowledge of numbers
  7. between one and one hundred in a variety of languages. Words have to be
  8. identified as quickly as possible against the clock.
  9.  
  10. Using OS_Symbol
  11. ---------------
  12. The Homerton.Medium font will need to been have 'seen' by the system.
  13.  
  14. Load by double clicking, the Word Tester icon will appear on the icon bar.
  15. Clicking on the icon will open the main window, with a small tool pane on
  16. the left corner. The top button cycles through the languages, the second
  17. button (with the flag) starts or stops a test. The column of red rectangles
  18. represent the time remaining, and are gradually filled in as a test is in
  19. progress. The counter at the bottom of the tool pane is the number of
  20. correct answers.

  22. When a test is in progress (click on the flag button to start) a number will
  23. be shown in the large white box - click on the button with the word that
  24. matches the number. If you are right a tick will appear - a cross indicates
  25. you were wrong, and you must keep trying until you find the correct answer.

  60. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  61. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  62. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3.
  63.  
  64. Geography:
  65. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  66.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  67.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  68.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  69.   & Africa.
  70. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  71.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  72.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  73. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  74.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  75. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  76.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  77. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  78.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  79.  
  80. Science:
  81. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  82.   against the clock.
  83. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  84.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  85.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  86.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  87. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  88.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  89.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  90.   different each time they are printed.
  91. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  92.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  93.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  94.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  95.   also be produced.
  96. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  97. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  98.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  99. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  100.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  101. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  102.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  104. Word Puzzles:
  105. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  106.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  107. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  108.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  109.   on screen
  110. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  111.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  112. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  113.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  114. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  115.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  116. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  117. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  118. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  119.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  120.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  121.   printed.

  123. Picture Puzzles:
  124. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  125.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  126.   range of abilities.
  127. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  128.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  129.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  130.   levels.
  131. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  132.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  133. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  134.   or columns into their correct positions.

  136. Miscellaneous:
  137. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  138.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  139. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  140.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  141.   your own tests.
  142. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  143.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  144. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  145.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  146. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  147.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  148. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  149.   export as a sprite file.
  150. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  151.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  152.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  153.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.
  154. * Birthday & Today. Produce an A4 sized poster on events taking place in
  155.   history either on your Birthday or any particular day. Information
  156.   displayed includes Famous Birthdays on the same day, events, films, songs
  157.   and sporting events. Variety of borders/watermarks provided.
  158. * School CV & CV+. School leavers (CV) or sixth form students (CV+) can
  159.   quickly create a CV by entering data. Layouts can be chosen from a
  160.   predefined set, and fonts changed. DTP style output without having to use
  161.   a DTP application.
