  3. Use
  4. =========
  5. Perhaps there is no use for this program. It is of interest to me, and I
  6. would love to find the methods of accurate tide prediction. This is not
  7. accurate, though it never gets too far from the normal tide predictions
  8. at Clacton.

  10. Explanation 
  11. ============ 
  12. John Collier writes in the Compendium Artis
  13. Nauticae, published in 1729-
  14.  
  15. "Each problem of navigation, is rendered intelligible to the meanest
  16. capacity. Rule:divide the date of the year by 19, add one to the remainder,
  17. and you have the Golden number; multiply that Golden number by 11 and divide
  18. the product by 30, the remainderis the epact....  To the epact add , in the
  19. month of January 0, February 2, March 1, April 0, May 3, June 4, July 5,
  20. August 6, September 8, October 8, November 10 , December 10 and the day of
  21. the month, if this sum is less than 30 it is the moon's age; if greater than
  22. 30 subtract 30 from it, and the remainder is the moon's age. Multiply the
  23. moon's age by 4  and divide the product by 5, the quotient are the hours,
  24. and the remainder are the minutes of the moon's southing."

  26. The author adds laconically :
  27.  
  28. "Note While the moon is in the increase she souths, before midnight; while
  29. she is decreasing she souths before noon. These things are known by every
  30. cabbin boy, colliers nag and waterman's servant, and therefore needs no
  31. further explanation."

  38. be within an hour of the correct time at Clacton.
