  1.                          Guide for Phy_Sym

  4. Introduction
  5. ------------
  6. Phy_Sym is a simple little application to test knowledge of the symbols
  7. used in physics, both circuits & logic gates. Symbols have to be identified
  8. as quickly as possible.
  9.  
  10. Using OS_Symbol
  11. ---------------
  12. The Homerton.Medium font will need to been have 'seen' by the system.
  13.  
  14. Load by double clicking, the Phy_Sym icon will appear on the icon bar.
  15. Clicking on the icon will open the main window, with a small tool pane on
  16. the left corner. The top button cycles through the amount of time allowed
  17. (the hourglass gradually fills up each time you click on it). The second
  18. button (with the flag) starts or stops a test. The column of red rectangles
  19. represent the time remaining, and are gradually filled in as a test is in
  20. progress. The counter at the bottom of the tool pane is the number of
  21. correct answers.

  23. When a test is in progress (click on the flag button to start) a symbol will
  24. be shown - click on the button with what you feel is the correct description.
  25. If you are right a tick will appear - a cross indicates you were wrong, and
  26. you must keep trying until you find the correct answer.

  28. Registration
  29. ------------
  30. This software is shareware - you try it before you buy it. You may use it
  31. for up to 30 days to evaluate its potential. If you continue to use it
  32. after then you must register it by sending a cheque for 3.50 to the address
  33. below. Print your name and address clearly, state who/what organisation
  34. you want the application registerd to & the name of the application (ie
  35. Phy_Sym).

  37. By registering you will receive a new copy of the application, with the
  38. unregistered windows that pop up removed. You can also be kept up to date
  39. with new applications as they become available. There is nothing to force
  40. you to register - but if you continue to use it beyond 30 days you are
  41. being dishonest and jepardise future releases.

  71. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  72. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  73. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. A catalogue is also available upon request.

  75. Geography:
  76. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  77.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  78.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  79.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  80.   & Africa.
  81. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  82.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  83.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  84. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  85.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  86. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  87.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  88. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  89.   with Key Satge 3 geography.

  91. Science:
  92. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  93.   against the clock.
  94. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  95.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  96.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  97.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  98. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  99.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  100.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  101.   different each time they are printed.
  102. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  103.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  104.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  105.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  106.   also be produced.
  107. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  108. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  109.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  110. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  111.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  112. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  113.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  115. Word Puzzles:
  116. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  117.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  118. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  119.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  120.   on screen
  121. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  122.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  123. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  124.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  125. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  126.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  127. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  128. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  129. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  130.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  131.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  132.   printed.

  134. Picture Puzzles:
  135. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  136.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  137.   range of abilities.
  138. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  139.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  140.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  141.   levels.
  142. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  143.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  144. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  145.   or columns into their correct positions.

  147. Miscellaneous:
  148. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  149.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  150. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  151.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  152.   your own tests.
  153. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  154.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  155. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  156.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  157. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  158.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  159. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  160.   export as a sprite file.
  161. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  162.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  163.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  164.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.

  166.   history eit
