  3. archbishop of Canterbury, to the duke, with a message appointing
  4. the duke as heir to the kingdom which God had entrusted to him.
  5. He also, at a later time, sent Harold, the greatest of all the
  6. counts in the kingdom alike in riches and honour and power.
  7. This he did in order that Harold might guarantee the crown to
  8. the duke by his fealty and confirm the same with an oath
  9. according to Christian usage.
