The Paint files in this folder are as follows :
1066tv - the Pevensey coastline in 1066.
1995tv - the Pevensey coastline in 1995.
pevOS - an example of how you could use a present
day OS map and enter 1066 information on
it to show how the area has changed (yes,
I know I am not the world's best artist and
that a 5 year old pupil can do better !).
se1066 - a more detailed map of the area in 1066.
Here is an interesting exercise that can be
carried out by pupils (well, I think that it is
interesting) :
- you will need a copy of OS Landranger 199 map,
'Eastbourne, Hastings and surrounding area'.
- you will also need a copy of the Domesday Book
for Sussex. Published by Philimore, 1976,
ISBN 0 85033 146 3.
- have a supply of tracing paper and pencils ready.
Pupils should make a tracing of the present
coastline and mark on it some of the major towns
and villages between Pevensey, Hastings and Battle.
Pupils could then describe how they would make a
present day journey by car and on foot from
Pevensey to Battle, via Hastings.
Using contour lines on the map and the Paint files
on this disc, pupils can make a tracing of the
coastline in 1066.
Using Domesday, they could mark on this map
settlements that existed in the 11th century.
How do you work out William's route out of
Pevensey ? (note - his ships sailed from
Pevensey to Hastings, whilst his knights rode
the distance).
Answer (I think) - Domesday gives examples of
settlements that were pillaged and raised by
these Norman knights on their way to battle.
e.g. NINEFIELD.
Value of the whole manor before 1066 £6;
later 20s; now 105s.
BEXHILL.
Value of the whole manor before 1066 £20;
later it was waste; now £18.10s.
If you want to take a real 'Blue Peter' approach
to this subject - toilet role holders on each
corner of the tracing paper, with the different
tracings at different levels, will give you a
3D image of the changing countryside (who needs
computers anyway ?).
NOTE : view the Paint files in MODE 15.
