  1.                                  Guide for Grid
  2.                                  ==============
  3. Introduction
  4. ------------
  5. Grid is designed with Geography Key Stage 3 in mind, testing knowledge of
  6. compass bearings and grid references based on a particular region of
  7. the world. Between one and five features can be tested at once, as well as
  8. varying the number of questions and playing against the clock.
  9.  
  10. Using Grid
  11. ----------
  12. Load Grid in the normal way. Clicking on its icon on the icon bar will open
  13. the Grid window, with a tool pane on the left hand side. The icons on the
  14. tool pane are:

  16. Flag - starts a test
  17. Question mark - sets the number of questions
  18. Hourglass - turns the timer (shown in the top right corner of the Grid
  19. window) on/off
  20. Trash - aborts a test
  21.  
  22. The Grid window is split into three sections, the largest of which is the
  23. map area. To the left of this is the Selection section; clicking on a
  24. particular feature toggles it on/off.
  25.  
  26. Below is the Question section where the question and five possible
  27. alternatives are shown. When a test is running (started by clicking on the
  28. flag) an answer can be selected by clicking on the letter (A,B,C etc). If
  29. your answer is wrong you must keep going until you find the correct one. The
  30. final 'score' is based on the number of attempts you make before finding
  31. the correct answer.

  33. Registration
  34. ------------
  35. This software is shareware - you try it before you buy it. You may use it
  36. for up to 30 days to evaluate its potential. If you continue to use it
  37. after then you must register it by sending a cheque for 4.99 to the address
  38. below. Print your name and address clearly, state who/what organisation
  39. you want the application registerd to, the name of the application (ie
  40. Grid) & which region (UK, Europe or Africa) you require.

  42. By registering you will receive a new copy of the application, with the
  43. unregistered windows that pop up removed. The companion application 'Where'
  44. will also be sent to you. You can also be kept up to date with new region
  45. sets as they become available. There is nothing to force you to register,
  46. but if you continue to use it beyond 30 days you are being dishonest and
  47. jepardise future releases.

  77. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  78. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  79. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3.
  80.  
  81. Geography:
  82. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  83.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  84.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  85.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  86.   & Africa.
  87. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  88.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  89.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  90. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  91.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  92. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  93.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  94. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  95.   with Key Satge 3 geography.

  97. Science:
  98. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  99.   against the clock.
  100. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  101.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  102.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  103.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  104. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  105.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  106.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  107.   different each time they are printed.
  108. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  109.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  110.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  111.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  112.   also be produced.
  113. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  114. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  115.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  116. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  117.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  118. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  119.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  121. Word Puzzles:
  122. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  123.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  124. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  125.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  126.   on screen
  127. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  128.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  129. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  130.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  131. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  132.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  133. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  134. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  135. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  136.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  137.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  138.   printed.

  140. Picture Puzzles:
  141. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  142.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  143.   range of abilities.
  144. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  145.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  146.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  147.   levels.
  148. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  149.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  150. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  151.   or columns into their correct positions.

  153. Miscellaneous:
  154. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  155.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  156. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  157.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  158.   your own tests.
  159. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  160.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  161. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  162.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  163. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  164.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  165. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  166.   export as a sprite file.
  167. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  168.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  169.   variables as wel
