  4. 'Tween' to produce this and other films for use within the Electronic
  5. Scientific Support Material(ESSM) project. Ace Computing are at 27

  8. copy of their document processor 'Impression'. Some of the utilities
  9. supplied with Impression have been used in the production of ConDrfit.

  12.      Some of the pictures have been produced with the aid of Computer
  13. Concepts 'Scan Light Junior'. The scanner was provided by ECS Computers,
  14. Kettlewell House, Kettlewell Lane, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, to whom I owe many
  15. thanks for their help and support in this project to produce Electronic
  16. Scientific Support Material.

  18. About ConDrfit
  19.       Please note that this is a pre-release version of ConDrift and
  20. due to certain innacuracies would not normally be distributed.
  21. However, comments from a number of teachers having to teach Earth
  22. Science for the first time has suggested that there is an urgent need for
  23. material such as this. So although the disc is not complete I have
  24. decided to release it. Therefore, if you feel that this file may be of
  25. use to any colleagues please copy it and pass it on. I hope that a new
  26. and more accurate version of the film will be available in 3 to 6
  27. months time. There should also be a short ReadMe file accompanying the
  28. disc giving a brief explanation of Continental Drift.
  29.       ConDrift is a loop of film showing how the continents have moved
  30. during the past 250 million years. The film is based on 6 maps which
  31. were originally produced in the late 60's early 70's and the thoughts
  32. and knowledge of the experts has progressed since then. Although I
  33. believe that the changes are mainly fine tuning rather than any
  34. dramatic changes and so the film is, at a general level, accurate.
  35. Except for India, however, part of which actually slides under the
  36. Eurasian plate. There are also definite innacuracies with the movement
  37. of the Eurasia plate during its collision with India. In addition
  38. 'minor' (?) islands e.g. Japan are not shown. There is also a slight
  39. problem in interpreting the film, for instance Australia does not look
  40. like Australia because it shows the continental plate at about 100
  41. meters below sea level. So the continental plate consists of both the
  42. land masses of Australia and New Zealand.
  43.      ConDrift is part of a teaching course intended to help Science
  44. teachers, and others, teach 'Earth Science'. I hope that the course
  45. will be completed in June 1991.
  46.      Although Electronic Scientific Support Material produces mainly
  47. posters and pupil information sheets projects such as Tween films will
  48. be undertaken and released as public domain material from time to
  49. time.

  52.      Producing this type of material takes a great deal of time and
  53. money. If you have any expertise in producing written scientific
  54. material, art work or editorial skills or reviewing draft material I
  55. would greatly appreciate your help. If you feel inclined to offer

  61. Electronic Scientific Support Material (ESSM).
  62.      ESSM is aimed at the science teacher. Its purpose is to produce
  63. high quality scientific pictures, worksheets, posters and at a later
  64. stage technical pictures that are stored on disc. This material can
  65. then be used and altered by teachers to suit their own needs. The
  66. material is copyright free, it may copied and passed on providing the
  67. copyright notice (see below) is observed. The cost of the material is
  68. intended to be about the price of a disc. 
  69.      In the past teachers have spent many hours producing printed
  70. information/worksheets/diagrams for pupils. Subsequently other
  71. teachers have used them but found that they did not quite meet their
  72. own requirements, or the original author found that the 'goal posts'
  73. had been moved, necessitating the material to be re-written. It
  74. occurred to me that if this work was done on a computer then it would
  75. be easier to tailor the material to suit individual needs. Until
  76. recently such work has been limited to text only, but with the
  77. development of the Archimedes and cheap, high quality, easy to use
  78. scanners such as Computer Concepts 'Scan Light' and 'Scan Junior',
  79. pictures can easily be put into a computer. 
  80.      Now pictures and text can be combined using desk top publishing
  81. (DTP) software, such as Computer Concepts 'Impression', (which is
  82. technically a document processor, capable of wordprocessing and desk
  83. top publishing) to produce a printed illustrated document. However, as
  84. the information is also on disc it can be easily altered to suit an
  85. individual teachers needs.

  88.      The contents of this disc is intended as public domain software
  89. (PDS). It is copyright free and copies of the disc may be made for
  90. free distribution, providing all ReadMe files that are on the original
  91. disc are present on any copied discs. The end user may modify the
  92. contents of the disc to suit their own particular needs, providing
  93. that any alterations are indicated (e.g. within a ReadMe file).
