  1.                             Guide for Bottle
  2.                             ================

  4. This application is shareware - you may evaluate it for 30 days. If you
  5. continue to use it beyond this time then you must register!
  6.  
  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. Bottle is a word puzzle based on the popular Hang Man. Three levels of
  10. difficulty are selectable, and hints can also be given
  11.  
  12. Using Bottle
  13. -------------
  14. Load Bottle in the normal way. When you click on the icon on the icon bar
  15. the Bottle window will open, with icons on the right side. A word from the
  16. default database is also selected and white boxes, one per letter, are
  17. shown. Bottle supports Acorns interactive !Help so load it to find out what
  18. the icons do.
  19.  
  20. To select a letter either click on the letter in the letter row, or use the
  21. keyboard. If you get a letter wrong then a bottle is knocked over. When a
  22. word is completed a tone is made and the score increases. If the word is not
  23. found in time it is revealed.

  25. Menu Options
  26. ------------
  27. Clicking Menu over the main window brings up a range of options - most are
  28. pretty obvious as to what they do, the rest are explained below:
  29.  
  30. a) Reset Files Path - if you have changed the directory used for word sets
  31.    (see below) then this will reset it to its previous setting
  32. b) Save New Path - again, if you change the directory used for word sets
  33.    then selecting this item makes your change permanent. Each time you load
  34.    Bottle your new directory will be used
  35. c) Save As Default - makes the current set of words the default one; ie the
  36.    set of words used each time Bottle is loaded
  37.  
  38. Word Sets
  39. ---------
  40. If you select the files icon then a directory called Words (inside the main
  41. Bottle directory) is scanned. You can add further word sets to this
  42. directory if you wish - next time you start up Bottle the extra sets will
  43. be detected. However you can set up a completely different directory if you
  44. wish by simply dragging a new directory onto the main window. If you want to
  45. make this directory permanent (ie the one used each time Bottle is used)
  46. then choose the 'Save New Path' item on the Bottle main menu.

  48. Word sets can also be loaded directly into Bottle by dragging the word set
  49. (which is just an Edit file) onto the main window.

  51. Registration
  52. ------------
  53. The registration fee for Bottle is 3.50 - this will keep you informed about
  54. upgrades as they become available as well as removing the 'unregistered'
  55. windows that pop up. You will also receive a simple editor so you can
  56. modify the word databases. To register make a cheque to M. Smith for 3.50
  57. and print clearly your address as well as who you want the program to be
  58. registered to. Include the name of the application on your note (ie Bottle).

  88. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  89. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  90. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. A catalogue is also available upon request.

  92. Geography:
  93. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  94.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  95.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  96.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  97.   & Africa.
  98. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  99.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  100.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  101. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  102.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  103. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  104.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  105. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  106.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  107.  
  108. Science:
  109. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  110.   against the clock.
  111. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  112.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  113.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  114.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  115. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  116.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  117.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  118.   different each time they are printed.
  119. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  120.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  121.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  122.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  123.   also be produced.
  124. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  125. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  126.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  127. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  128.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  129. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  130.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  132. Word Puzzles:
  133. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  134.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  135. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  136.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  137.   on screen
  138. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  139.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  140. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  141.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  142. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  143.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  144. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  145. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  146. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  147.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  148.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  149.   printed.

  151. Picture Puzzles:
  152. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  153.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  154.   range of abilities.
  155. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  156.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  157.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  158.   levels.
  159. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  160.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  161. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  162.   or columns into their correct positions.
  163.  
  164. Miscellaneous:
  165. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  166.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  167. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  168.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  169.   your own tests.
  170. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple
