  1.                          Guide for Desktop Turtle
  2.                          ========================

  4. This application is shareware - you may evaluate it for 30 days. If you
  5. continue to use it beyond this time then you must register!
  6.  
  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. This application will allow you to control an on screen 'turtle' in the WIMP
  10. environment. It supports most of the usual commands (eg FD, RIGHT) etc as
  11. well as procedures and numeric variables. Additional graphic and sound
  12. features are also included.
  13.  
  14. Using Desktop Turtle
  15. --------------------
  16. Desktop turtle is an extensive application - to get the most out of it you
  17. will need the manual which you receive when you register (this gives info
  18. on commands, has a tutorial section and provides additional tips and
  19. advice). A help system is provided, which gives a brief summary of the
  20. supported commands and their use, but this is very limited. A limited level
  21. of interactive help (try loading Acorn !Help) is supported, which explains
  22. most of the icons.

  24. Load Desktop Turtle in the normal way. When you open the application you
  25. will be presented with the 'Display Window'. This consists of four sections:
  26.  
  27. a) top row gives information about the turtle
  28. b) icon row allow some functions to be clicked on rather than typed as
  29.    keyboard commands
  30. c) large white area that covers most of the window is the turtle drawing
  31.    area. Note that no screenwrap is used.
  32. d) text entry box at the bottom of the window. Note that several commands
  33.    can be entered per line - simply leave a space between each command
  34.  
  35. Mouse Clicks
  36. ------------
  37. Clicking the mouse over the display window has three effects, depending on
  38. which button you press:
  39.  
  40. SELECT - moves the turtle to the point where you click
  41. MENU - opens the options menu
  42. ADJUST - displays the angle and distance needed (in the New Position section
  43. in the top right of the window) to move the turtle from its current position
  44. to the point where you click. Because the angle is always shown as a whole
  45. number then this may not always be exact.
  46.  
  47. Commands
  48. --------
  49. To find out what commands are available, and how to use them, click on the
  50. blue information icon (third from left). Then click on the particular
  51. command you want data on. Clicking on the 'i' on the top right of the Help
  52. window takes you back to the index. Although not stated, commands are not
  53. case sensitive.

  55. Two additional commands are supported, but not documented:
  56. a) CIRCLE (followed by a number for radius) - draws a circle centred on the
  57.    turtle
  58. b) INPUT (followed by a variable eg length) - stops and prompts the user to
  59.    enter a numeric value
  60.  
  61. Graphic Backdrops
  62. -----------------
  63. To load a background picture onto the main display, simply drag a sprite
  64. onto the main display area. Note that if you later CLEAN the area then the
  65. backdrop is lost. Two files are included inside the Backdrop directory. By
  66. using the UK map in conjunction with the sprites prefixed with a W you could
  67. create a weather map for example.

  69. Registration
  70. ------------
  71. The registration fee for Desktop Turtle is 7.99 - this will entitle you to
  72. be kept up to date about upgrades as they become available as well as
  73. removing the 'unregistered' windows that pop up. To register make a cheque
  74. to M. Smith for 7.99 and print clearly your address as well as who you want
  75. the program to be registered to. Also write the name of the application on
  76. your note (ie Desktop Turtle).

  105. -------------
  106. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  107. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  108. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. 
  109.  
  110. Geography:
  111. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  112.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  113.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  114.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  115.   & Africa.
  116. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  117.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  118.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  119. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  120.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  121. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  122.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  123. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  124.   with Key Satge 3 geography.

  126. Science:
  127. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  128.   against the clock.
  129. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  130.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  131.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  132.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  133. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  134.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  135.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  136.   different each time they are printed.
  137. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  138.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  139.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  140.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  141.   also be produced.
  142. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  143. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  144.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  145. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  146.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  147. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  148.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  150. Word Puzzles:
  151. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  152.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  153. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  154.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  155.   on screen
  156. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  157.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  158. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  159.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  160. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  161.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  162. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  163. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  164. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  165.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  166.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  167.   printed.

  169. Picture Puzzles:
  170. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  171.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  172.   range of abilities.
  173. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  174.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  175.   files; allows the number of tiles to
