  63. 1. Introduction

  66. I know many people in primary and secondary education, and living with a
  67. teacher showed me just how much work there is to be done outside school
  68. hours. This program was written to replace board sums and hand written
  69. worksheets, and since it works almost automatically, it saves a lot of time
  70. and effort.
  71. Some main features:

  74.  • User defined maximum and minimum numbers

  85. Although AutoSheet has been rigorously tested on various machines, bugs can
  86. occur. If you come across any problems, please see the appendix.

  95. 1.1 Disclaimer

  98. This manual, the contents of the AutoSheet disc and any worksheets created
  99. remain © 1996 Alisdair McDiarmid. Sheets may be photocopied on-site, but not
  100. sold. Alisdair McDiarmid reserves the right to refuse any person, group or
  101. company permission to use this program. The author has no direct control over
  102. the use to which this product is put, and therefore offers no warranty
  103. relating to its use or misuse.  Alisdair McDiarmid cannot be held responsible
  104. for any loss of data due to the use or misuse of this product.

  107. 1.2 Licence Agreement
  108. ---------------------

  110. AutoSheet is ShareWare. This means that you may use AutoSheet on a trial
  111. basis only for a period of 30 days. After this trial period, you must either
  112. destroy your copy, give it away or complete the registration form and send it
  113. to Alisdair McDiarmid at the address in the manual. The current cheapest
  114. registration fee is just £5, making Autosheet easily the most inexpensive
  115. arithmetic worksheet creator available. This registration fee includes a disc
  116. with a registered version of AutoSheet, and a printed Impression manual may
  117. be supplied (see below – Licences). Note - this is not professionally
  118. printed, just laser printed booklet format, folded and stapled.

  120. There are three levels of registration available, each  with a different and
  121. appropriate price. These levels are :
  122.  • Student – priced at £5, this covers individual pupils (or parents). This
  123.    includes the right to use AutoSheet indefinitely. Unfortunately, at this
  124.    price free updates are not available from me, and you will not receive the
  125.    Impression manual on disc or printed.
  126.  
  127.  • Teacher – priced at £15, this is for teachers to use for their own pupils
  128.    only;  worksheets may not be photocopied or used elsewhere in the
  129.    school/site. You will be entitled to free updates and a printed Impression
  130.    manual will be supplied. This requires payment with the order – official
  131.    educational orders are not permitted.
  132.  • Site Licence – priced at £30 (although I reserve the right to alter this
  133.    price at my discretion) which allows teachers to photocopy their
  134.    worksheets and to copy the program for use on site only. You will again be
  135.    entitled to free updates and a printed Impression manual will be supplied.
  136.    Extra manuals will be supplied at a price of £1.50 each. Official
  137.    educational orders are permitted, to be sent to David Holden at APDL only.

  139. Unregistered versions of AutoSheet may be freely distributed with the
  140. following conditions:
  141.  
  142.  • AutoSheet must be distributed intact, excluding the manual in Impression 
  143.    format, which must not be distributed. The text manual must be supplied.
  144.    Any alterations made to the program must be removed before distribution.
  145.  
  146.  • AutoSheet may only be distributed in such a way that no commercial gain or
  147.    advantage is made via its distribution. Distribution ‘costs’ may be
  148.    charged so long as they are less than the equivalent of £2.00 sterling.
  149.  • AutoSheet may not be distributed on any CD–ROM or PD collection, or with
  150.    any commercial product without my prior consent.

  152. Registered versions of AutoSheet may not be distributed. These contain a
  153. unique traceable serial number and the licensee’s name. Computer software
  154. thieves can and will be prosecuted.
  155. Licensees of AutoSheet may make infinite backups, as long as AutoSheet is
  156. installed or used on no more than one machine at a time (site licences
  157. exempt).

  160. 2. Using AutoSheet
  161. ------------------

  163. AutoSheet is best run from a writable disc, and preferably from a hard disc.
  164. To use AutoSheet it should be installed to hard disc or copied onto another
  165. floppy disc for safety.

  167. 2.1 Installation
  168. ----------------

  170. AutoSheet should be installed on a writable media. Drag the AutoSheet filer
  171. icon from the floppy disc or CD-ROM to a suitable directory to copy it.
  172. Acorn's DrawFile module is required for AutoSheet to run. On the AutoSheet
  173. master disc you should find !Scrap, !System and !SysMerge. If you do not have
  174. !Scrap and !System on your hard disc or work disc you should copy them
  175. across. If you have an A5000, A4, A4000, A3020 with hard disc, a Risc PC or
  176. an A7000 then you will almost definitely have a copy of !System and !Scrap on
  177. your hard disc. All Risc OS 3.1 computers have !System and !Scrap on the
  178. Applications 1 disc. To add the DrawFile module to your copy of !System using
  179. SysMerge, double-click on the !SysMerge filer icon. A window similar to the
  180. one below should appear. Drag your copy of !System† to the window, and then
  181. drag the copy of System from the AutoSheet master disc to the window.
  182. SysMerge will then add the DrawFile module to your System directory.
  183.  
  184. † On a Risc PC or A7000, the System directory is inside the Boot application
  185.   on the hard disc. To access it, hold down <Shift> and double-click on the
  186.   !Boot filer icon. Open the Resources directory; the !System icon should be
  187.   visible.

  190. 2.2 Loading AutoSheet
  191. ---------------------

  193. To load AutoSheet, double-click on its filer icon. It should load onto the
  194. icon bar. If you wish to print you must load Printers from your hard disc or
  195. Applications 1 disc.

  198. 2.3 Creating a Sheet

  201. To create a new worksheet click <Select> on the icon bar icon or choose
  202. AutoSheet>New Sheet... from the icon bar menu.

  204. The New Worksheet Window
  205. ------------------------

  207. There are several options to be set on this window before creation. To change
  208. the sum type, click on the right arrow next to Problem Type. Choose a type of
  209. problem from the menu. You can use the four normal sums − addition,
  210. subtraction, multiplication and division − or Magic Squares, a 3 by 3 box
  211. where every line adds up to the same total.
