  10. What is Hang Fire? ___________________________________________________________
  11.  
  12.                 Hang Fire is a Multi-Tasking, Programmable, Screen Saver for
  13.                 RISC OS machines.
  14.  
  15.                 It's main purpose is to help prevent monitor burn-in caused by
  16.                 leaving the monitor on displaying a static picture for long
  17.                 periods of time (usually when the computer is left alone.)

  19. Multi-Tasking, Programmable, Screen Saver ____________________________________

  21.                 Why?
  22.  
  23.                 You'll have to take the "Multi-Tasking" and "Screen Saver" 
  24.                 bits for granted (just go and test out the program while
  25.                 running something like !Spark in the background archiving a
  26.                 file--even while Hang Fire © is runing it will still be
  27.                 archiving in the background) but the "Expandable" is
  28.                 easily explained by the fact that I have 'plug-in modules'
  29.                 (17 or so at the moment.)

  31.                 The "Programmable" bit refers to the way I decided to do the
  32.                 whole screen saver bit... You see when the authors of After
  33.                 Dark (for the macintosh) popped into the Auckland Uni Grad
  34.                 Lab 'Just taking a quick look' they handed out a few copies
  35.                 of the latest version (this was about a year ago) and all the
  36.                 Mac users were very impressed, but I kinda thought "Yes, very
  37.                 nice, but half those screen savers remind me of all those
  38.                 simple little BASIC programs everyone had as graphics demos
  39.                 on the BBC, Master, and Arthur Arcs..."

  41.                 Then I thought "I can do that... Easy..." (And for anyone
  42.                 that knows me, those words are indeed 'ominious' :-) (Which
  43.                 reminds me, I must release that 3D desktop Tetris I did once
  44.                 after thinking those very same words... Thought it would be
  45.                 a weekends work; ended up as about three weeks... Well _you_
  46.                 try it sometime :-)

  48.                 To cut what is starting to look like a rather long point a
  49.                 bit shorter: It is programmable since the modules are all
  50.                 just written in BASIC... This is partly because it is easy
  51.                 for me, partly because it is easy for everyone else to write
  52.                 modules and partly since I know full well most BBC->Arc
  53.                 owners have got (and written) lots of dinky little "screen
  54.                 hacks" in BASIC that would be really neat if they were to 
  55.                 suddenly come back into fashion again... Now I think Hang
  56.                 Fire © is a great way for people to again try their hand at
  57.                 these neat programs and have a good chance that lots of other
  58.                 people seeing them even if those people are just "users" who
  59.                 happen to run Hang Fire to save their moniters.

  71.                 Basically this means that I retain copyright of the program,
  72.                 but allow anyone to make a copy of it so that they can trial
  73.                 the program to see if they like it.

  75.                 I only place two restrictions on the copying of this software.
  76.                 The main one is that all files (including this help file) must
  77.                 be included in any copy made. The other one may be found under
  78.                 the Beebug clause below.

  80.                 Many software authors say on their software that they have
  81.                 copyright but also say that the software is public domain.
  82.                 As far as I can tell, the two are mutually exclusive--public
  83.                 domain means that you have given up all rights of control
  84.                 over the work. This is why I have decided to assert my 
  85.                 ownership over Hang Fire.

  87. How long can I trial Hang Fire for? __________________________________________

  89.                 I feel that one week is a fair time to allow people to get
  90.                 the feel of the program.

  92.                 After that time you should decide whether you find Hang Fire
  93.                 useful. If you don't thats fine. You may give or show it to
  94.                 anyone else you want, but you may no longer use it yourself.

  96.                 If you do feel that Hang Fire is useful and you intend to
  97.                 use it then you have to send one of the following amounts
  98.                 of money to me at the address at the end of this help file
  99.                 (or write me a module as detailed below.)

  105. Are you a Nazi? ______________________________________________________________

  107.                 Actually no. I hardly think that Hang Fire is going to be my
  108.                 personal get rich scheme. But I have spent a fair while on it
  109.                 and do I think its fair to ask you to pay me some small amount
  110.                 of money if you are going to use it.
  111.  
  112.                 The other way for you to register (and thus to not have to
  113.                 pay the above fees) is to write a Hang Fire © module and
  114.                 send it to me. 
  115.  
  116.                 I'll accept any module that is not basically a copy of an
  117.                 existing one for Hang Fire ©. If you make signifcant
  118.                 improvements to existing modules that is also acceptable.
  119.                 Send your module (and if possible the rest of the Hang Fire ©
  120.                 package to me on a disc with enough money for return
  121.                 postage, and I will put you in the 'registered' file, add
  122.                 your module (and any text about it) to the modules I already
  123.                 have, and then send you the latest copy of Hang Fire © with
  124.                 all the modules I have recieved to date.

  126.                 If you want (and if you can), you can send modules to me
  127.                 via email (at the address below) and I will add you to the
  128.                 registered list and include your module for everyone else
  129.                 to see. I can't easily send you the whole of Hang Fire ©
  130.                 as email charges are a bit unpleasent in New Zealand at
  131.                 the moment. If you want I can send you the latest
  132.                 !RunImage via email though.

  136.                 Well not really... But if you want to call it something, I
  137.                 suggest you refer to it as "pizzaware." The piizaware conecpt
  138.                 is that you give me money and I spend it on pizzas at 
  139.                 "Mamma Mias Pizzaria Resturant" in Mission Bay, Auckland,
  140.                 NZ... These are the best pizzas I have ever come across and
  141.                 I would venture that they are some of the best in the world.
  142.                 Go there and try one today! (And No, I don't care that you
  143.                 happen to live in the UK... Trust me, it'll be worth it. :-)

  145. The Beebug Clause ____________________________________________________________

  147.                 To reiterate, you may copy this software freely as long as
  148.                 you retain all the documentation that comes with it 
  149.                 (including this help file). You may put this software (with
  150.                 all its files) in any software library or in any remote
  151.                 database (e.g. a bulletin board) as long as you do not
  152.                 charge any money for this software over the cost of copying
  153.                 and media. This, put simply, means you may not make a profit
  154.                 from this software.
  155.                 The exception to the above covers the Beebug user
  156.                 group/company and the Risc Devleopments company. These two
  157.                 groups may not give or sell the software to anybody, or allow
  158.                 any body to obtain it from them.
  159.                 This is because the author feels that these groups have
  160.                 a bad attitude towards both software authors and the
  161.                 archimedes community at large.
  162.                 Other authors have also included clauses of this type in
  163.                 their software, dispite pressure (including the possible
  164.                 threat of legal action against them and/or distributers of
  165.                 their software) from these two organisations.
