- What is Hang Fire? ___________________________________________________________
-
- Hang Fire is a Multi-Tasking, Programmable, Screen Saver for
- RISC OS machines.
-
- It's main purpose is to help prevent monitor burn-in caused by
- leaving the monitor on displaying a static picture for long
- periods of time (usually when the computer is left alone.)
-
- Multi-Tasking, Programmable, Screen Saver ____________________________________
-
- Why?
-
- You'll have to take the "Multi-Tasking" and "Screen Saver"
- bits for granted (just go and test out the program while
- running something like !Spark in the background archiving a
- file--even while Hang Fire © is runing it will still be
- archiving in the background) but the "Expandable" is
- easily explained by the fact that I have 'plug-in modules'
- (17 or so at the moment.)
-
- The "Programmable" bit refers to the way I decided to do the
- whole screen saver bit... You see when the authors of After
- Dark (for the macintosh) popped into the Auckland Uni Grad
- Lab 'Just taking a quick look' they handed out a few copies
- of the latest version (this was about a year ago) and all the
- Mac users were very impressed, but I kinda thought "Yes, very
- nice, but half those screen savers remind me of all those
- simple little BASIC programs everyone had as graphics demos
- on the BBC, Master, and Arthur Arcs..."
-
- Then I thought "I can do that... Easy..." (And for anyone
- that knows me, those words are indeed 'ominious' :-) (Which
- reminds me, I must release that 3D desktop Tetris I did once
- after thinking those very same words... Thought it would be
- a weekends work; ended up as about three weeks... Well _you_
- try it sometime :-)
-
- To cut what is starting to look like a rather long point a
- bit shorter: It is programmable since the modules are all
- just written in BASIC... This is partly because it is easy
- for me, partly because it is easy for everyone else to write
- modules and partly since I know full well most BBC->Arc
- owners have got (and written) lots of dinky little "screen
- hacks" in BASIC that would be really neat if they were to
- suddenly come back into fashion again... Now I think Hang
- Fire © is a great way for people to again try their hand at
- these neat programs and have a good chance that lots of other
- people seeing them even if those people are just "users" who
- happen to run Hang Fire to save their moniters.
-
- What was the message on the Intro screen? ____________________________________
-
- > Note well: Hang Fire © is
- > NOT public domain. It is
- > copyright E. Poor 1991.
- > You may however copy it
- > freely for evaluation. Full
- > use involves paying a fee
- > as detailed in the help files.
-
- Basically this means that I retain copyright of the program,
- but allow anyone to make a copy of it so that they can trial
- the program to see if they like it.
-
- I only place two restrictions on the copying of this software.
- The main one is that all files (including this help file) must
- be included in any copy made. The other one may be found under
- the Beebug clause below.
-
- Many software authors say on their software that they have
- copyright but also say that the software is public domain.
- As far as I can tell, the two are mutually exclusive--public
- domain means that you have given up all rights of control
- over the work. This is why I have decided to assert my
- ownership over Hang Fire.
-
- How long can I trial Hang Fire for? __________________________________________
-
- I feel that one week is a fair time to allow people to get
- the feel of the program.
-
- After that time you should decide whether you find Hang Fire
- useful. If you don't thats fine. You may give or show it to
- anyone else you want, but you may no longer use it yourself.
-
- If you do feel that Hang Fire is useful and you intend to
- use it then you have to send one of the following amounts
- of money to me at the address at the end of this help file
- (or write me a module as detailed below.)
-
- Either NZ$15
- OR UK£5
- OR US$10
-
- Are you a Nazi? ______________________________________________________________
-
- Actually no. I hardly think that Hang Fire is going to be my
- personal get rich scheme. But I have spent a fair while on it
- and do I think its fair to ask you to pay me some small amount
- of money if you are going to use it.
-
- The other way for you to register (and thus to not have to
- pay the above fees) is to write a Hang Fire © module and
- send it to me.
-
- I'll accept any module that is not basically a copy of an
- existing one for Hang Fire ©. If you make signifcant
- improvements to existing modules that is also acceptable.
- Send your module (and if possible the rest of the Hang Fire ©
- package to me on a disc with enough money for return
- postage, and I will put you in the 'registered' file, add
- your module (and any text about it) to the modules I already
- have, and then send you the latest copy of Hang Fire © with
- all the modules I have recieved to date.
-
- If you want (and if you can), you can send modules to me
- via email (at the address below) and I will add you to the
- registered list and include your module for everyone else
- to see. I can't easily send you the whole of Hang Fire ©
- as email charges are a bit unpleasent in New Zealand at
- the moment. If you want I can send you the latest
- !RunImage via email though.
-
- So this is shareware? ________________________________________________________
-
- Well not really... But if you want to call it something, I
- suggest you refer to it as "pizzaware." The piizaware conecpt
- is that you give me money and I spend it on pizzas at
- "Mamma Mias Pizzaria Resturant" in Mission Bay, Auckland,
- NZ... These are the best pizzas I have ever come across and
- I would venture that they are some of the best in the world.
- Go there and try one today! (And No, I don't care that you
- happen to live in the UK... Trust me, it'll be worth it. :-)
-
- The Beebug Clause ____________________________________________________________
-
- To reiterate, you may copy this software freely as long as
- you retain all the documentation that comes with it
- (including this help file). You may put this software (with
- all its files) in any software library or in any remote
- database (e.g. a bulletin board) as long as you do not
- charge any money for this software over the cost of copying
- and media. This, put simply, means you may not make a profit
- from this software.
- The exception to the above covers the Beebug user
- group/company and the Risc Devleopments company. These two
- groups may not give or sell the software to anybody, or allow
- any body to obtain it from them.
- This is because the author feels that these groups have
- a bad attitude towards both software authors and the
- archimedes community at large.
- Other authors have also included clauses of this type in
- their software, dispite pressure (including the possible
- threat of legal action against them and/or distributers of
- their software) from these two organisations.
