This program is either very useful or potential deletion fodder. I personally find it very useful. I'll leave you to make your own mind up. In any case, it only uses 5K of space on a disc and Sod's Law says that if you delete it on Monday, on Tuesday you'll need it.
This application was written because I wanted to see if I could write it. It was originally designed for text files. Now of course, you can combine text files together in !Edit, !StrongEd or whatever but I found that a rather nice offshoot was that you can also combine Armadeus sound samples! Yes! Because of the very straightforward (ie: no headers, compression etc.) of the Armadeus format, you can combine samples together so that they play one after another.
This is definately more useful.
Using this program is quicker than loading your favourite text editor, finding the files, dragging the first into the window, scrolling down and then dragging the second in, then saving the file. However, the program loses its speed advantage as your files get bigger. If you have a large text file (like those inside !ChangeFSI, which are the files I tested !Combine with) you'll probably find that the text editor method is faster.
!Combine recognises 8 formats that it can convert, and will attempt to convert any files you throw at it, as long as both files are of the same format (ie: combining a text file and a Draw file won't work!).
The prompts are very straightforward, apart from the 'Linefeed' one. This should only be used with files that only contain text (ie: text files, obey files etc). If you opt for a linefeed (by entering 'Y' or 'y' at the prompt) then the program will separate the two files with a blank line. This may bugger up any non-ASCII text files so you're really best off leaving it alone.
Rule of thumb- always reply 'N' or 'n' to the 'Linefeed' prompt.
--- If the program crashes with 'No room for this DIM' then free more memory
and try again. If you're combining sound samples, which tend to be rather
big, you'll need lots of free memory. Try increasing the slotsize of the
'Free' slot in the Task Manager, failing that, increase the 'Next' slot
instead. Failing that, buy a Risc PC with 16Mb of RAM ---
