Mapper 3.3 is a Geographical Information System programme for the PSION3a palmtop computer.  It displays outline maps of Great Britian and selectively overlays road, ferry and airport information as well as a range of useful data for leisure and business activity.  Also available is Mapper for Ireland and for London in large scale.  Created by and copyright 1994, 1995 to Steve Litchfield.  Steve Litchfield runs 3-Lib a library of shareware and utility programmes for Psion pocket computers.  Steve can be contacted at:

  23. Description of Overlay
  24. ======================
  25. This overlay lists all 39 British Telecom International and the Channel Isles Coast Radio Stations in Great Britian through which ships may link call STD numbers anywhere in the World and vice-versa using VHF/MF/HF Maritime Radio.

  27. The Overlay includes a Database file which contains all station channel and frequency information as well as times for Traffic Lists, Navigation Warnings, Weather Forecasts and Gale Warnings.

  29. Intention of Overlay
  30. ====================
  31. The overlay assists in the location of the nearest coast radio station for those at sea.  For those ashore it assists in the identification of the nearest station to a vessel through which you can ask for traffic to the vessel to be routed.  To place a call to a ship  through any of these station call freephone 0800 378389 and ask for PORTISHEAD BOOKINGS.  Portishead radio will assist in the whole process and direct your call through the correct station.

  33. The Mapper overlay offers the following information:

  35. A yacht transmitting to a radio mast Icon shows the location of the station aerials.
  36. The first field gives the NAME OF THE STATION
  37. The second field gives the keystroke that will search the database file for the station information.

  39. The NAME OF THE STATION is the name which the radio station officers will respond to when called by ships.  This name will almost certainly differ from the name of the nearest geographical town.  Maritime Radio station names usually reflect the name of the sea area they serve or the name of the nearest coastal feature where the aerials are located.  Portishead Radio aerials which offer the Worldwide HF service are correctly located on the overlay near Rugby (!) though the 3 sets spaced 50 miles apart are only shown once with the centre set.

  41. The Reference field gives the keystroke that looks up the DATA application to find the full station listing.  Full instructions as to how to use this feature are given in the Mapper help file but in summary:

  43. - Install the database on any drive and open it using the DATA button

  45. - Press the SYSTEM button
  46.  
  47. - Move to Mapper and start it.

  49. - Use MENU - FIND - FIND IN OVERLAY to locate your station choice (Hot Key - Shift Psion F)

  51. - Use MENU - TOWNS - Search in DATA for ........... (Hot Key - Shift Psion K)

  53. The correct DATA file must be open in order for the search to work correctly.

  57. - Absolutely no liability can be or will be accepted for accidents caused by using this information whilst at sea.  This information does not replace officially recognised navigational information required to be carried aboard your vessel by the resolutions of the International Maritime Organisation as enacted by the UK MERCHANT SHIPPING (NAVIGATION PUBLICATIONS) REGULATIONS 1972 (as amended or may be amended).

  59. - You are reminded that Mapper calculates distances in Statute Miles and not in Nautical Miles.  For comparision 1 Nautical Mile equals approximately 1.14 Statute miles.
