BORDERS
A small selection of borders in draw format.  Nice
quality.

BUSHIDO
This small collection of maps and plans was
inspired by the difficulty Mr Morfitt found getting
hold of useful material for playing the
magnificent role-playing game Bushido
(produced by FGU).
Contents:

 1) Boat plans; these are self-explanatory classic
small boat and larger junk.

 2) House plans: These are at 25mm scale or 6‘ =
1“, for use as ground plans for role-playing.
Timber posts, sliding doors, hinged doors,
verandas, etc., are largely obvious and need no
explanation.  Some have explanatory diagrams
showing room use, etc., where known.

 3) Misc items: Tents: these can be cut out,
coloured and glued together for use in role-
playing. Exhaustive search of my book
collection produced only one possibly early tent
design and this is it. The tents should be coloured
in stripes, possibly red and white, green and white
or black and yellow. The Samurai mon or heraldic
emblem can be displayed if the owner can claim
one.

4) The Sado directory is material (2 very basic
maps showing places and topography, largely
factual but with some invention to fill in the gaps)
on an island off the north coast of Japan, used
throughout the middle ages as a place of exile for
opponents of whichever regime happened to be in
power at the time. It is the basic material for a
scenario, still (after some years!) in the process of
being written. The story will involve the
attempted rescue of a samurai leader in exile there
but threatened with imminent execution, so the
deadline for the player-characters are tight. The
action takes place in the 1th century, probably my
favourite period in Japanese history, which was
the time of the wars of the rival northern and
southern courts, and its basic theme and facts are
taken from the chronicle The Taiheiki. I shall
hopefully get round one day to finishing the
whole scenario.

 5) Temple Plan: At present this consists only of
the floor plan of the main worship building and
the ground floor plan of the pagoda of a Buddhist
temple, so is very incomplete. Perhaps I shall add
more if I have time, as well as doing some Shinto
temple buildings. I did begin to do a plan of a
large Zen Buddhist temple complex but have
not got very far with it.

 6) Town Plans: TownPlanA is typical of the sort
of towns that sprang up from an early period as
commercial centres at river crossings and around
temples.

DEMONSTRATIONS


!XTREME
This is probably the very first Acorn demo made
by several foreign demo crews together.  It
features several exciting techniques never
shown in the Acorn demo scene until now.
Xtreme will run on many Archimedes and RiscPC
machines, however not all demo parts will work
on the low end machines.  Some demo parts will
(most of the time silently) be skipped when the
necessary hardware (e.g. VIDC20) isn’t available.
If you want to see every demo part in its full
glory, run the demo on a RiscPC with 1 MByte
VRAM.

BROWNIAN
This is a simulation of the so called Brownian
Motion. This phenomenon can be viewed for real
by looking at smoke particles with a microscope.
The smoke particles have to be illuminated from
the side. They generally travel along in a straight
line until they are hit by the invisible tiny air
molecules. These are light, but move very fast, so
they jolt the smoke in
different directions when they actually collide.

CHISQUARE
The program can do simple statistical Chi-
Squared tests. The test can be used for various
purposes, but was originally wrote on a Beeb
to compare the numbers of crossed fruit flies in a
batch, with the theoretical number derived from
the laws of genetics discovered by Gregor
Mendel.

This application was written to aid the literacy
tutor in the preparation of cloze exercises for their

EPOCHS
This program simply shows information about the
geological sequence.

ESCHER
The familiar tiling of a kitchen or bathroom wall
is usually produced by placing square or
rectangular tiles edge-to-edge and corner-to-
corner over the wall. Many more interesting
tilings can be formed by tiles of more complex
shapes. Such tilings are produced by placing a
shaped tile in a number of orientations,
repetitively over a plane. For the tiles to fit
together, only certain orientations of the tiles can
be used, and they in turn constrain the allowed
shapes. In spite of these restrictions, there are vast
numbers of possible tilings which are really
limited only by one’s imagination.
The Dutch artist M C Escher was the great
pioneer and exploiter of this idea. This program
allows appropriate shapes to be generated and the
associated tilings to be produced.

This is an application with but one purpose: to

This is the 100th Etext file presented by Project
Gutenberg, and is presented in cooperation with

SLIDERULE
For those people who remember far enough back,
before Sir Clive Sinclair developed his early
calculators, people who had to multiply
could used log tables, which made multiplication
a little easier,
once you knew what you were doing. A quicker
way of multiplying, dividing, and other
operations, was to use, a device called a
sliderule. This essentially consisted of two rules,
fitted in a sliding arrangement, that could be
positioned to read off for instance the result of
multiplying two numbers. This is a compute
version control is via the mouse.

This program amalgamates both !Say and
!KeySpeak.  It also has the bug sorted out that
prevented Key Speak saying shifted charecters.
The three options include :-

 1.    Speaking keys, while multitasking, with
other programs.  Possibly it could be  of use to

 2.    Any text file dragged on to the icon bar or
main window will be recited.

 3.    Text can be written in to the window icon.

SSYSTEM
This program is one that demonstrates the
movements of planets in the solar system, the
ratios of the speeds and orbital size being
fairly accurate. No attempt has been made to
make the orbits true ellipses, they are describing
purely circular motion.

STATISTIX
This program performs limited statistical analysis
of data.  It can contain two data banks only.  It
performs the following tasks.
 1. Descriptive, data is available, about these two
data sets.
 2. A significance difference test can be performed
on the two sets.4 3. The first of these two sets can
be analysed to find its‘ frequency distribution,
and the resulting data can be saved as a CSV file ,
or displayed as a histogram, which can also be
displayed as a drawfile.

Tables tests, in a way that is fun, the knowledge
of tables.  In this modern age of computers and
calculators the need to know the times tables is
thought of, by many, to be unimportant.

TELESCOPE
!Telescope is a multi-tasking program under RISC
OS and provides information on the objects
within our Solar System as well as
general astronomical data.  The observer’s date
and time can be selected for any period past,
present and future since 713 BC and the
observer’s location can be entered for any place
on Earth.  Data is provided for the Sun, Moon and
planets. In all calculations it is assumed the
observer is at sea-level.

TRENT
This is a program that can be used to find an
index of quality of a freshwater river or lake. It
was developed by the Severn Trent Water
Company. It depends on the fact that the purer
water is:-
 1. It has more species of animal present.
 2. Certain indicator species also indicate pure
water.

TRIANGLES
!Triangles will find the angles, internal area and
the lengths of sides for any right angle triangle
and allows the calculation of angles, with full
working displayed, using Sine, Cosine and
Tangent.

In this game you must guide the bubble-pilot
through a series of underground intergalactic

BAKA_CHAL
This is an ancient Tibetan game, normally played
on a beaten brass board, with the pieces made
from cast brass.  There are  tigers and 20 goats -
you play the goats.  The game starts with the

BOMBZ
This is in my opinion one of the best PD games to
come my way in a long time.  The graphics are
superb; the game play is smooth and the puzzles
are easy enough to complete yet hard enough to
make you think!!  Your task is quite simple.  Get
rid of all the bombs on each level then escape off
the edge of the screen. To blow up a bomb, push
it to where you want to cause an explosion, then
collect a detonator and touch the bomb again and
quickly get out of the way. This version contains
1 levels plus a level designer.

BREAKOUT
A simple game of Break Out.

BRIX
Brix is a game where sets of two brix fall into the
screen from any side and you must connect them
in rows of three or more to make them vanish.
When rows of three or more brix vanish any brix
left on their own will also vanish.  When two brix
into the screen you may rotate them and move
them around as they fall.  They will stop once
they land on other brix.  If the brix fall out the
edge of the screen you will lose points. As the
game progresses the level of difficulty will also
increase.  This will make the brix fall down

BUMPER
You must guide the Bumper Ball around 12 levels
each with 10 laps. To  complete a lap you must go
round the course in the direction shown by the
arrows and collect the flag. The end of a lap is the
area between the 2 chequered flags. You must
complete each level within the time limit. Once
you get the hang of it you’ll enjoy this one.

bad guy characters which animate even when not
moving.  The scoring system is worked out by the
amount of money collected.  The bad guys
become harder to dodge on later levels.  The
bonus randomly appears in different positions on
screen and will disappear when not collected.

0What you’ve got here is a (another) puzzle
game. Push the boxes onto the crosses which
someone’s drawn on the floor. Remember that
you can’t push a box if there’s something solid on
the other side of it.  An extra complication “new
with Pushy II”: you also have to push balls onto
crosses, and they don’t stop moving till they hit
something.  This is one of the best PD games
available.  The graphics are stunning.

This is the SHAREWARE version of the Lobster
Fishing simulation.  Lobster Fishing is a game for
people of all ages (although it is primarily aimed

SHUZZLE
Shuzzle is a very simple puzzle, but one that can
be highly infuriating. It is based on a x grid with
an extra square sticking out of the left hand side.
The puzzle involves  groups of  items, all items in
a group have the same properties, and no two
groups have identical properties.  When you have
arranged the pieces such that no two pieces from
the same group lie in the same row, column
or main diagonal the computer will place the
word ‘Done’ in the extra grid position and will
also stop marking possible pieces to move.

packages. You can stack them, so can reach even

dynamite!! This is the ‘mini level’ version.  The

!U2 is a binary-ascii converter using uuen/
decoding routines, and has more knobs and
whistles than you can shake a stick at.   It will
encode and decode to/from single/multiple files
and (if desired) will attempt to extract
intelligently multiple encoded parts contained, out
of order, within a single file.  The filetype of the
original file is included in the encoding and the
decoded file’s type can be set before decoding.

UnHTML converts HTML to Plain Text,
Impression, or Draw Text area format.  It can also
extract bookmarks from links found on HTML

programming environment.  Rlab is a very high
level language intended to provide fast
prototyping and program development, as well as

not a clone of languages such as those used by

as Rlab focuses on creating a good experimental
environment (or laboratory) in which to do matrix
math, it can be called “MATLAB like“ since the
programming language possesses similar
operators and concepts.

TCL
Tcl (pronounced tickle ) is a simple interpreted
scripting language. It is extendible in that it is
easy to add commands to Tcl, and embedable in
that it can be included in other applications.
Tcl was invented and implemented by John
K.Ousterhout, originally for unix systems. It is
usually used with an extension to the x
windowing system called Tk, either embedded in
applications, or using a general purpose Tcl/Tk
program called wish. Tcl can also be
used from the command line using another
program called tclsh. Unix Tcl is split into a
generic part and a POSIX extension, containing
the unix-specific operations such as file handling.

Vista is a library written in C++ for use when
writing desktop applications on Acorn RISC OS

FALCONS
This movie is a birds eye view of the RAF’s
Parachutes Display Team  The Falcons, as they
jump from a Hercules transport aircraft and
complete a free fall display at RAF Lockings
‘Flowerdown Fair’ in 1996.  We would like to
thank them for the use of their video and
their permission to include the Replay version on
this CD. The initial Replay file was 142 megs in
size and it compressed to 33 megs.

HARMONY
Harmony is a music player. It gives you plenty of
control over the track being played. It provides
useful features − no guff. It will play all the
common Acorn music formats. And best of all, it
has a playlist. You choose your tracks, drop them
into Harmony and play them. Or you could load
one of your saved playlist files. You can do things
like Shuffle play, and of course it’s all very easy
to use.

PDTracker is an advanced desktop music player

This is a simple desktop aid for BASIC

BlockSize is a small utility which counts the disk
space used by files.  It works like the Filer
‘Count’ option but rounds up each
file size to the nearest sector, thus displaying real

can also display the total size for different sector

ChangeTxt supports the following

      OS/2 & Macintosh platforms. So a bullet ‘•’
      will still look like a ‘•’ even if it has a
      different ASCII value between character sets.
   - Strips invisible characters. Expands tabs.
   - Provides direct conversions between
      platforms:
     Acorn to Mac, Dos, OS/2
     Dos to Acorn, Mac , OS/2
     Mac to Acorn, DOS, OS/2

new ‘deep-colour’ (32 thousand & 16 million
colour) sprites introduced with RISC
OS 3.5. v1.12. This archive also contains
DF_Render v1.00. This application was written to
test the new transformation facility of the
DrawUtilsA module, which is an alternative to the
DrawFile module (both do most of the work of
displaying a drawfile). For comparison purposes
the program can also use the DrawFile module.
and DrawPrint v1.02  This application is a
DrawFile viewer and printing utility which
allows replacement of unknown fonts in the

swapping out of a task). The memory it

the task back in again.  This un-registered copy

EVNTSHELL
A ‘Shell’ program is a starting point for
developing your own applications that run under
the RISC-OS wimp system. The
EvntShell library contains code to handle most of
the ‘Events’ i.e. opening a menu, closing a
window etc that can occur, and all your
application has to do is inform the library what it
should do when certain events occur. For example
a menu can be attached to a window or to an icon
- the library will open the menu for you in the
correct position! when the <MENU> button on
the mouse is used.

PROCshell_AttachModeChangeHandler is
another very simple example which calls a
function in the ‘User Application’ this is the bit
you write, starting with a ‘Shell’ created by the
AppBuild tool or by modifying one of the
examples when the screen mode changes.
A more complicated example is
PROCshell_AttachPane which allows the
attachment of pane windows to a parent window.
All opening and closing of windows and panes is
handled totally by the library code.  This is a very
desirable application for any programmer to have.

It supports ResFind internationalisation and menu
handling using Alex Petrov’s MenuUtils module
for even more flexibility.  It is supplied with
many demo applications that are fully commented
and serve as excellent teaching tools. They are:

representation of all the descendants of a given

standard GEDCOM genealogical data format.

using the fast Fourier transform. They expect an
Armadeus formatted input file and output graphs
in Draw format. FFT_2D outputs a two
dimensional graph with level as y-axis and

three dimensional graph with frequency along the
y-axis, time along the x-axis and level is
deflection.  FFT_3D option sonograph outputs a
three dimensional graph with frequency along the
y-axis, time along the x-axis and level is black

Figlet is a RISC OS port of the unix Figlet
program. Figlet prints its input using large
characters made up of ordinary screen characters.
It has a window front end which allows you to set

A pretty good fractal program. FracPaint is a
multi-tasking RiscOS application to create images
of fractal formulae. More than a thousand

FRACTULUS
Fractulus is a multitasking application for
computing fractals. By loading different cores
you can compute different types of fractals
(standard Mandelbrot sets, Julia sets...). I should
mention, though, that it uses FPA instructions and

gif2rpc is a program for RISC O S (>= 3.10) that
converts GIF image files to native sprite files.
This program was written mainly to allow the
generation of 32K colour images that look as
good as they can.  This is because, despite what
you intuitively feel, a 256 colour image displayed
on a 32K colour screen does *not* look that
good.

This must be the best application I have yet come
across for anyone who either plays the guitar or
would like to play the guitar.  It contains
information on just about every aspect of the
guitar and not only will it show you the finger
positions for each chord but will also play the
chord so that you know you’ve got it right.
The front end is also superb with a lot of thought
going into the graphics and user interface.

HAMMER
This is a desktop utility that allows easy use of
the Hammer module, which is closely linked to
Andy Southgate’s GameSuite game designer
package.  The annoying drawback to the Hammer
module is that it can only easily be operated from
the command line, which can become a
bit of a pain.  This app helps cure this problem.

This is the ultimate in screen burn savers. It
contains 16 modules that each give a  different
type of effect while saving your monitor.  These
vary from a great sliding puzzle of your
current screen to fireworks.  It is also multitasking
and fully programmable.

HARDAPPS
Hard apps was an idea borrowed from Acorn. In
the new RISCPC, there is a directory on the hard
drive called Apps. Basically, anything you put
into it is placed into the ResourceFS inside the
Apps directory so you can easily get at it. Neat ?
You can now do the same with other Acorn
machines.

MacroLife is a desktop version of the famous
game of Life, invented by the British
mathematician John Horton Conway in 1970.  It
displays a scrollable window onto a Life plane, or
grid, onto which you can place patterns of cells
and watch how they evolve.  Besides running on
the desktop, MacroLife offers a very large Life
plane. It is 65,536 cells on a side, over 4 billion
cells in total.

Facilities are provided to assist with navigating
around the plane, buthey are only needed if you
want to generate really large patterns.

These routines started life in 1989 written in C on
the university mainframe in response to a

for the puzzle deadline.  ARM3 the routines run at
the same speed as they did on the mainframe!

Powerbase is a flat-file database management
system for use with Acorn 32-bit RISC

recommend this database highly enough. It comes
complete with six database files Boxes, Elements,
Icons, and friends. CSV files can be converted to
Powerbase format easily and it also supports
‘External’ fields which can be text, sprites or
draw files.  Powerbase will work on a single
floppy system but if you have more than 1meg
then use it from a RAM disc for blinding speed.

Compliant Application (PCA) messaging
standard. This standard is designed to facilitate
the sharing of common data object types residing

Compliance with the standard will enable your
applications to be used with any other which also

an example sprite viewing and painting program
called !Spaint which conforms to the PCA
standard. This program is provided as an example
only. It has not gone through our usual bug-
testing and quality control process and therefore
should not be considered anything other than

This little application performs a useful function.
It allows you to force applications which would
not normally process files of a given file type
(when double clicked) to accept them (running

force it to accept double clicks for the other file
formats it understands (eg. GIF, BMP, etc.). It can
also be used for getting SparkFS to accept
ArcFS’s new filetype archives.

This program performs limited statistical analysis
of data. It can contain two data banks only. It

1. Descriptive, data is available, about these two
    data sets.
2. A significance difference test can be performed

data can be saved as a CSV file , or displayed as a
histogram, which can also be displayed as a

Thumbnail provides you with a convenient way
of searching for a picture from a library of
pictures by providing ‘Thumbnail’ versions of the
pictures that can be viewed quickly and easily.
Thumbnail requires Acorn’s ChangeFSI

file formats to a convenient format.  Thumbnail
also provides support for producing thumbnails of
Draw and Artworks files. Thus it can provide a
very convenient way of looking at clipart for the
Draw/Artworks files you want without having to
load all the draw files into !Draw, !ArtWorks or
!AWViewer. All Thumbnail pictures are stored at
16bpp (or 32 bpp) and dithered to either 256
colour or 16 colour when needed for display.

TIDYDIR
This short basic program scans a directory and
tidies up the file names. It converts them all to
lower case except the initial letter which it
capitalises, for example heLLO would become

TIFFIN
Reads TIFF files and converts them into 32-bit
sprites (16.7 million colours). But ChangeFSI
does that, doesn’t it?  Well, yes, most of the time,
but ChangeFSI doesn’t cope with all TIFFs. In
particular, it doesn’t cope with multi-channel
TIFFs such as those exported by PhotoShop 3 on
the PowerMac. Tiffin is likely to read just about
any valid TIFF file thrown at it. You can then drag
the sprite into ChangeFSI for scaling or taking
down to fewer colours.

instead provides information and a sprite
when the file is double-clicked. Comes with a
10,000 word comprehensive manual, and built in
editor, searcher and scanner as well ability to save
the data as sprite or information as text to
disk. This is the shareware version and can be
used 20 times, after that you can register for the
much improved package with extra relating
software for just £5. This application only needs
64K.

USEFUL is a set of modules and routines
designed to make programming easier.  These
modules, although very useful for BASIC
programs, are designed to be used in languages
which don’t have certain features built in, for
example assembler doesn’t have a random
number generator built-in, and thus the Random
SWI could be useful.  All modules contain full

Videobase is an application to keep track of
recordings and free spaces on a collection of
video tapes. It is designed to make maintaining
the database as easy as possible and to avoid the
possibility of inappropriate inputs.

Vicinity is just another address book hidden under
a flashy name. It has all the usual features: it
holds name, address and telephone information;
you can flick through the records; search for a
name (case insensitive); goto to a record; insert a

This is the latest release version of !Virtual (0.27)
- a taskwindow replacement with virtual memory.

files can be controlled and setup by

WINED
WinEd is a shareware template editor.  Its features
are aimed at designing templates for RISC OS 3
with a 3D look, but it can also be used for 2D
templates. The most attractive features of WinEd
are:
        • Main editing interfaces use dialogue boxes.
        • Icons can be dragged between windows,
including a customisable ‘Picker’ window
containing  the most  commonly used icons.
        • Multiple files can be loaded by one
instantiation of WinEd.

WimpTiles is a set of 25 new Pinboard and
window backdrop patterns.   It has a Wimp front-
end which allows you to pick and mix the
available Sprites to find a combination you like.

one occurs.

XChars is a replacement for the Chars utility that
comes with RISC OS with a lot of additional

Shareware

These are the standard rules of shareware:

a) You may freely distribute unregistered copies
of the software to other users.

b) You have a trial period to evaluate the
software.     (1 to 30 days)

c) If after this time limit you are still using the
software or intend to use it in the future then you
must register with the author and pay any
registration fee due.  You are breaking the law if
you fail to do so.

d) If you do not intend using the software then
you must delete it from your floppy / hard disc.

Remember in most cases the authors of shareware
have spent hundreds of hours creating programs
of a very high quality for you to use.  It is up to
you to register and ensure that the author gets
some reward for his or her hard work.
Please note that these are the basic rules and more
conditions may be found within the program itself
or in a help/text file.

Licenseware

This is a form of shareware which is licensed to
one or more PD libraries.  In essence, when you
buy a licenseware program you are buying low
cost commercial software.  Don't pass it around
to your friends.  You are the only one who has the
right to use it.
