!WinManage- !Boot sequence generator
======================By Graham Crockford===================================
If you have read anything about the Risc PC, you will know that it has some
kind of set !Boot structure. !WinManage seeks to provide some sort of Ro3
version of this, by allowing you to set up and generate a !Boot application,
which can have extra programs and applications, modules or sprites added
to it whenever required.
AS far as I know, I'm the first to develop such an application (I'm probably
dead now) and I have designed it to be as easy to use as possible, whilst
still remaining customisable by the tech-heads out there. Personally, I
wouldn't use the program as I already have a Boot sequence, but it's
excellent for those that haven't already made themselves a boot structure,
and want to be saved all the tedious bug fixing and thinking involved in
making one.
Note: !WinManage supports interactive help.
Instructions
============
The menu:
Info: Opens a standard acorn information box.
Panel..: Opens the main control panel.
Save: Saves the completed !Boot application.
Quit: Quits the application.
The control panel:
The icons are, from left-right, top-bottom:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Colour: Pressing <select> opens the 'colour' control window. Pressing <adjust> opens the palettes directory within
!Winmanage, you may save your own palettes to this.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Configure: <Select> loads !Configure, allowing you to change the CMOS
RAM settings.
<Adjust> opens Resources:Apps, where !Configure is located.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Desktop: <Select> opens the desktop glitter window.
<Adjust> opens the desktop glitter utilities' resources
directory.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
System: <select> opens the system control window.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-Desktop: <Select> and <adjust> both open the directory containing the
applications/programs which will be run before the desktop
starts. Drag apps/progs to this driectory, and they will be
included automatically in the !Boot application.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post-desktop: <Select> and <adjust> both open the directory containing the
applications/programs which will be run after the desktop has
started. Drag apps/progs to this driectory, and they will be
included automatically in the !Boot application.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pinboard: <Select> loads the textfile containing the names and
co-ordinates of objects to be added to the pinboard.
<Adjust> opens the resources directory containing this file.
saving a file from pinboard's save option to here will mean
that you can design your pinboard how you want it and then
use that. If doing this, do NOT have a backdrop set up when
you save the pinboard, otherwise it will be loaded twice when
the computer boots up.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The colour window
=================
Scheme: You can select a default palette from !WinManage's resources
by clicking on the pop-up menu icon. Clicking on 'Test' will
run this palette, so you can see what it looks like.
Custom: Clicking on 'Custom colour scheme' pops up the palette, and clicking
on 'Save' pops up a save dialogue box, allowing you to save your
redesigned palette. To add this to the list, click with <adjust> on
the 'Colour' icon in the control panel, and drag your new palette
to the directory display which opens. Clicking on the pop-up menu
icon again, you will find your palette on the list, allowing you
to select it.
The desktop glitter window
==========================
Window borders: you can select a file of sprites to be used as the border
sprites for your windows.
Default sprites: select a file of sprites to be used as icons in the desktop
Backdrop: select a textured backdrop to go onto the pinboard.
Clicking on any of the sunken boxes with <adjust> clears it to <none>. If
<none> is shown, no border sprites/sprites/backdrops will be used.
To add a set of borders, icon sprites or a backdrop to the lists, click on
the Desktop icon in the control panel with <adjust>. A window containing
3 directories will open. Put backdrop sprites in the one marked 'backdrops',
border sprites in the one marked 'borders' and iconsprites in the one marked
'icsprites'. They will be automatically added to the lists.
The System Window
=================
Drag the !System and !Scrap which you want to be used to the relevant boxes.
A system and scrap directory MUST be defined, as they are a key part of the
boot process.
Modules to load:
Pre-Desktop : Clicking on this icon opens a textfile. Into this you should
type the leafnames (ie. the names shown in directory displays)
of the modules you want loaded from !System before the desktop
starts up.
Post-Desktop: Clicking on this icon opens a textfile. Into this you should
type the leafnames (ie. the names shown in directory displays)
of the modules you want loaded from !System after the desktop
has started up (such as filters).
EMERGENCY RELEASE NOTE: THE NEW !SYSTEM STRUCTURE CONTAINS A SECOND
DIRECTORY, '310'. AS NO CHECK IS MADE (AS YET) OF THE TYPE OF SYSTEM
DIRECTORY YOU HAVE, ALL MODULES IN THE FILES DETAILED ABOVE WILL BE LOADED
FROM !System.Modules. THE NEXT VERSION WILL CONTAIN A CHECK.
Once you have set up all the options you want and put in all the applications
you want loaded, written all your lists etc, simply drag the boot from the
main save box to the root directory of your Hard Disc.
Then press F12 and type:
*Configure Drive <the drive number of your hard disc, usually 4>
*Configure Boot
*Opt 4,2
When you next switch on the computer, it should set up just how you designed
it.
Customising the !Boot sequence once it has been saved
=====================================================
Everything needed is held within the !Boot application itself.
Shift-Double-click on the !Boot application, and double click on the 'data'
directory.
The files and directories are:
(some may not be present, namely the tools, sprites and backdrop files.
This would be because you had not set one to be used.)
backdrop: If you want a backdrop loaded, this is it. It may be deleted.
palette: This MUST be present, but you can replace it as you wish.
pinboard: You can change this file by, for example, clicking menu on the
pinboard, choosing "save" and dragging the file here. Make sure
no backdrop is present on the pinboard when you do so.
Pre Desk: In this directory are any programs or files you want to be
executed before the desktop starts. This may include a desktop
welcome banner replacement, or a "Tracker" tune.
Post Desk: In this directory are any programs or files you want to be
executed after the desktop has started. This may include !Printers,
!Fonts, filters, etc.
sprites: This is a file of sprites which will be added to the wimp sprite
pool on bootup. This file may be deleted or appended to.
syspaths: This textfile contains the full pathnames of the !System and !Scrap
directories which will be booted and modules run from on bootup.
These may be changed, but MUST be correct AND present.
system: In this directory are two textfiles, postdesk and predesk. They are
simply
