  14.      I have not tested this patch with Risc OS 3.11, I do not think it
  15.      will work since the address of the filer module may have changed (and
  16.      possibly its version number). If anyone can modify the 'FilerPatch'
  17.      program in the !NewFiler directory so that it works with Risc OS 3.11
  18.      I would be grateful if they would tell me what changes they have made
  19.      so I can update the program to work with both versions.

  22.      About the Program

  25.      This application modifies the Filer module so that it will treat
  26.      directories whose names begin with ASCII character 160 as well as the
  27.      usual ! character, as applications. ASCII character 160 looks like a
  28.      normal space, and is obtained by pressing Alt and Space.

  30.      Once you have renamed your applications to begin with Alt-Space
  31.      instead of ! and modified the !Sprites files appropriately (see
  32.      below) the appearence of your directory viewers should be enhanced
  33.      considerably :-)

  36.      How to use it
  37.      -------------

  39.      The !NewFiler application just provides an interface to a program
  40.      which takes a copy of the Filer module from memory, patches a short
  41.      piece of code onto it and saves the resulting file to your disc.

  43.      Double click on !NewFiler and follow the instrctions in the window
  44.      that appears. Once you have finished, reboot your computer. To verify
  45.      that the updated Filer module has been loaded, press F12 and type
  46.

  49.      Filer should appear near the end of the list, and its position should
  50.      start with the digits 018 - something like this:

  66.      followed the instructions in !NewFiler's window correctly.

  68.      Once you have done this you will not need to run !NewFiler again. The
  69.      only file you need to keep on your disc is the one you have just
  70.      created - NewFiler. You can delete the !NewFiler application if you
  71.      like.

  74.      Modifying your applications
  75.      ---------------------------

  77.      This is quite simple:

  79.         1) Rename the application so that it begins with Alt-Space instead
  80.            of !. If there is room, you may wish to put another Alt-Space
  81.            at the end of the name so that it stays central under the icon.

  83.               eg: Rename !Impress to _Impress_, where _ represents
  84.                   Alt-Space
  85.  
  86.         2) Load the application's !Sprites file, and MAKE A COPY OF its
  87.            sprite with the name you used in 1) above. If you just rename
  88.            the sprite, you will probably find that it doesn't appear on
  89.            the icon bar! Save the modified sprite file.

  91.               eg: Copy the sprite called !impress as _impress_ (again, _
  92.                   represents Alt-Space)
