  14. 16, 4 OR 2 COLOUR RECORDINGS CANNOT BE MADE.
  15. The effectiveness of the compression makes a
  16. compressed 256 colour screen smaller than an
  17. uncompressed 16 colour screen generally, though, so
  18. this is not really a problem. Just enter a 256
  19. colour mode before starting to record.

  21. This program records mouse movements, starting from
  22. the moment it is run until it is quit, in a manner
  23. suitable for playback by the accompanying
  24. application !MousePlay. The mouse movements are
  25. recorded in an application called !Recording created
  26. in the same directory as !MouseRec. If a !Recording
  27. already exists there, it will be overwritten (though
  28. rather than overwriting previous recordings it is
  29. best to delete them and create new ones as there may
  30. be surplus screenshots left behind  unoverwritten
  31. and unused by the new recording, taking up extra
  32. disk space.
  33. Mouse movements are recorded faithfully but screen
  34. changes are recorded as follows: When !MouseRec is
  35. started up, it takes an immediate screenshot (in a
  36. compressed format) and stores it to disk. No alter-
  37. ations to the screen will actually be noted during
  38. this recording except for when you signal a further
  39. screenshot. You do this by pressing the left Alt key
  40. once. Whenever a screen shot is being taken, the
  41. computer will freeze (you won't even be able to move
  42. the mouse) for about a second or two, then beep to
  43. signal when it has completed, freeing the mouse
  44. again so you can continue.
  45. When you have finished making a recording, hold down
  46. the right shift and right control keys (this stops
  47. any actions being recorded while they are held down)
  48. and open the Task Display. Quit !MouseRec from there
  49. and release the keys.
  50. It is important to start up !MouseRec by Adjust-
  51. double-clicking to close its filer window as it
  52. takes a screenshot immediately upon loading up and
  53. this will otherwise contain the recording program
  54. (but NOT the recording. This will mysteriously
  55. appear from the second screen shot onwards and
  56. vanish again when the replayer loops back to the
  57. beginning).
  58. The results of this program can be very useable,
  59. leaving a computer running demonstrating its
  60. abilities, e.g. at a show or the like, without
  61. anyone needed to control it. It can also be used as
  62. a tutorial system, but its method of screen update
  63. makes this technique a little dubious (e.g. menu
  64. items do not flash when selected, etc.). For more

  67. N.B. Recordings can be renamed, given user-designed
  68. sprites, etc. and anything else you like. If you do
  69. not tamper with the !Run file it will run under any
  70. name whatsoever.
