!KickBack
by R. Pfeifer
====================================================
A simple way of preventing unwanted people getting
into directories they shouldn't be in: Copy
!KickBack! into the directory, Shift-double-click on
it to open it up, load !Boot into !Edit or another
suitable text editor, and remove the | symbol at the
start of the first line. Save.
When !KickBack! triggers, it displays a brief
message telling people that they shouldn't be in
this directory, and invites them to press space or
click the mouse to continue. If they don't respond
in 2 minutes, it acts as if they have, anyhow. The
relevant filer window closes and !KickBack! renames
itself to a filename consisting of horrible symbols.
This is done so that next time the filer window is
opened, it triggers again. Sometimes, for unknown
reasons, it triggers twice. This only happens if a
subdirectory of the protected one is opened when
!KickBack! is triggered. This is a very odd thing to
happen, but sometimes it does.
If by this time !KickBack! has not triggered, set it
off now by double-clicking on its icon. It is now
armed and will turf anyone out of its directory
immediately.
The way you get into your protected directory is
very simple and cannot be changed (as it is a built-
in feature of the WIMP filer). When you open the
directory containing !KickBack!, hold down control.
This prevents its !Boot file from running and the
protection from operating.
N.B. You can rename !KickBack! (or whatever it is
calling itself at the time) whenever you wish, but
it is fairly pointless as it will change its name
again next time it triggers.
It has been designed to pick filenames consisting of
characters in the ASCII value ranges 192-255, i.e.
ones rarely used in normal circumstances. However,
if you use files with names only consisting of such
characters preceded by a !, !KickBack! may
accidentally overwrite or damage them, or crash
itself. But then, if you use file names like that,
you are a very strange person. Nonetheless, you have
been warned.
