  8. INTRODUCTION...
  9.  
  10.   Fonter allows you to easily adjust the spacing between letters in outline
  11. fonts.
  12.  
  13.   The PD application !WFNConv converts CorelDraw fonts into RISC OS outline
  14. fonts. Unfortunately, the spacings between the letters goes haywire. It is
  15. not practical to use FontEd to adjust the widths of each character in each
  16. font because there are over 120. If you work quickly, then it will take
  17. around half an hour to do each font (speaking from experience!). Therefore
  18. it will take you over 60 hours to do the lot!. With the aid of this
  19. application, it will take you just over an hour! (less stress as well!)
  20.  
  21. USING...
  22.  
  23.   Load onto the iconbar in the usual way. Fonter supports Acorn's !Help
  24. application.
  25.  
  26.   Drag a folder containing the IntMetrics and Outlines files (from inside
  27. a !Fonts directory) onto the icon. A sample of the font will appear in the
  28. window. Enter a value for the spacing (this is individual for each font, but
  29. the ideal value will probably be in the range 0-200). Press RETURN or click
  30. on OK to see the effect on the sample. The saving has already been done,
  31. so when you are happy with the spacing, you can drag the folder containing
  32. the next font onto the window or iconbar icon.

  36.   When you click on OK or press RETURN, the IntMetrics is removed from the
  37. Font Cache, altered, then put back. This means that if you have any
  38. applications currently using the font that you are altering, then when their
  39. windows are updated the spacings between the letters will change to reflect
  40. the value that you entered. This can be used to your advantage, because you
  41. could have a sample of the font at, say, 60pt in Draw to check the spacing
  42. at large sizes as you alter it.

  44. HINT...
  45.  
  46.   If you have just converted the fonts from CorelDraw and have RISC OS 3+,
  47. then don't forget that a lot of them are ideal candidates to have oblique
  48. variants made using the procedure as described in BBC Acorn User, July 1993,
  49. page 103. This can add around another 20 fonts to your collection.
