  1. 256 Colour Palette File Editor from Mike Curnow

  4. This application allows 256 colour palette files to be edited. The palette
  5. files can be used with graphics enhancer boards, with 256 colour sprites,
  6. and with applications that support 256 colour palette files such as !Paint
  7. and !Fractal.
  8.  
  9. This software requires RiscOS 3.1.

  13. 256 Colour Palette Files
  14. ========================
  15. These files are like the standard 16 colour Wimp palette files but with 256
  16. colours. The internal format is simply a VDU stream composed as follows:

  18.   19,n,16,r,g,b   where n=0-255 colour number, and r/g/b are the colour levels.

  20. To set the palette outside the desktop use *PRINT filename. Under the
  21. desktop use the palette utility supplied with your graphics card - just drag
  22. the file onto the palette utility.
  23.  
  24. If you don't have a graphics card you can still use 256 colour palettes in
  25. your 256 colour sprites. This is useful to get 256 grey scales when printing
  26. or transferring sprites to computers that support 256 colour images. To set
  27. the palette of a sprite, simply load the sprite file into !Paint and edit
  28. the sprite. Then drag a palette file onto the sprite window - !Paint will
  29. automatically redraw the image with the new colours as best as possible in
  30. the mode you are in. Note that you can drag straight from the EditPal
  31. Save-As window onto the !Paint window.

  33. Editing A Palette File
  34. ======================
  35. Load EditPal and then drag a palette file onto its icon to edit.
  36. Alternatively click SELECT to edit the default palette or Adjust the current
  37. palette if in a 256 colour mode.

  39. To edit a single colour double click SELECT on a square and then use the
  40. palette editor. The colour being edited is highlighted by a white square,
  41. and its number is shown in the palette editor title.

  43. To use the edit tools you need to select 1 or more colours. Click SELECT on
  44. the initial colour, then click ADJUST to set the range of colours which will
  45. be shown by a dashed box. Cancel a range by clicking SELECT.

  47. To Copy/Move/Swap/Merge a range, click SELECT over the FIRST colour of the
  48. range and then DRAG to the new position - a rotating dashed box shows that
  49. dragging is in progress.

  51. To increment / decrement a range of colours click SELECT / ADJUST on '⇧ ⇩'.
  52. Use the numbers below the icon to set the increment.

  54. Blend sets the colours in between the first and last selected colours to a
  55. smooth gradient. Use the colour icons below to select which colours to
  56. blend. For example if colour 0 was black and colour 255 was white, blending
  57. between the two would produce a grey scale.

  59. Rotate allows the colours to be rotated by +/- 90°. Besides the obvious
  60. effect, this facility is provided to allow you to select and edit a range of
  61. "vertical" colours.

  63. Viewing Palette Files
  64. =====================
  65. Up to 16 palettes may be viewed at the same time. You can copy via dragging
  66. palette values from one window into another. Colours are shown as best as
  67. possible by dithering - select a 256 colour mode for best results. When in a
  68. 256 colour mode you can click SELECT on the RGB tool icon to set the screen
  69. palette. Alternatively click ADJUST to set the palette except for colours
  70. 0-15 which are set to the desktop colours.
