  11.  PURPOSE
  12.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------  DiscComp is a small utility designed to make compacting discs easier. At
  13.  the moment the only way to compact a disc is to use the command line.
  14.  DiscComp makes disc compacting easier by providing a user interface for
  15.  the *Compact command.

  18.  SELECTING A DISC
  19.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------  Discs are compacted from the main window. To open the main window click on
  20.  the DiscComp icon on the icon bar. The window is divided into two halves.
  21.  The left-hand side of the window is used for selecting the disc to
  22.  compact. To select a drive click on its corresponding radio icon. If your
  23.  drive has a number other than those in the window you can enter it into the
  24.  'Other number:" icon. For instance, to compact a disc in drive 6 you would
  25.  enter '6' into the writable icon to the right of 'Other number:'. The
  26.  final option can be used to name specific discs to compact. For instance,
  27.  entering 'MyDisc' would cause the disc 'MyDisc' to be compacted. You are
  28.  prompted to insert the disc if it is not present. This option can also be
  29.  used to select your hard disc by name. For instance, 'IDEDisc4' can be
  30.  entered here instead of selecting drive 4.

  32.  COMPACTING THE SELECTED DISC
  33.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------  Compacting a disc can be done in a number of different ways, depending on
  34.  the disc selected on the left-hand side of the window.
  35.  
  36.     1) Clicking on 'Compact' in the bottom right of the window will compact
  37.        the disc selected on the left.
  38.          
  39.     2) If the caret is in the 'Other number' or 'Disc name' writable icons
  40.        then pressing return will do one of two things:
  41.            a) If the icon is selected then pressing return will compact
  42.               the disc, the same as clicking Compact.
  43.            b) If the icon is not selected then pressing return will select
  44.               it.
  45.        Therefore, if drive 4 is selected (for example) then to compact a
  46.        disc called 'MyDisc' enter 'MyDisc' into the 'Disc name' writable
  47.        icon and press return twice.

  49.     3) Pressing return in the 'Repeat' writable icon will compact the
  50.        disc, the same as clicking 'compact'.

  52.  DiscCompact is semi-intelligent, in that it times each compaction, so that
  53.  if you select a large repeat number it will stop trying to compact the disc
  54.  when no more compaction is possible.

  57.  THE PERCENTAGE HOURGLASS
  58.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  59.  During compaction a percentage hourglass will appear to give an indication
  60.  of progress. The percentage given is NOT the time taken, as there is no way
  61.  of predicting how long a compaction will take, but shows the number of times
  62.  the disc has been compacted out of the specified repeat number. Therefore
  63.  the first few percent will take longer than the rest, and the percentage may
  64.  never get above 10% due to the intelligent compaction.

  67.  OPTIONS
  68.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------  The right-hand side of the window contains various options. Click on an
  69.  option button to alter its state.
  70.  
  71.     1) Confirm: This asks you to confirm every compaction, so that you can't
  72.        compact a disc by mistake. This is not included as a safety measure
  73.        because no harm can be done by compacting most discs, but because it
  74.        is annoying having to wait for a disc to compact that you didn't want
  75.        compacting!

  77.     2) Repeat: Sometimes a disc doesn't compact fully on the first attempt,         so I have included a repeat option. When it is switched on it will
  78.        compact the disc the number of times shown in the white box next to
  79.        'Repeat'. To alter the number, click on the box and enter the new
  80.        number.

  82.     3) Show free: This option is used to display disc information when
  83.        compaction is complete. When selected, it brings up a new window.
  84.        This is described later.

  86.  To close the main window, click on the close icon. All options are
  87.  remembered when the window is closed, and can be saved by clicking on
  88.  'Save options'. Once saved, the options will be set automatically whenever
  89.  you run DiscComp. All settings in the main window are saved, including the
  90.  information in the writable icons.

  93.  OTHER BUTTONS 
  94.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------  On the right of the main window, underneath the options, are three buttons.
  95.  They are:
  96.      
  97.       1) Show free...  : Analyses the currently selected disc and displays
  98.                          the Disc Information window which is described
  99.                          above. This function is included so that the exact
  100.                          space on a disc can be worked out.
  101.                          
  102.       2) Save options  : Saves the current options to disc, as described
  103.                          above.
  104.                                      
  105.       3) Compact       : Compacts the currently selected disc as described
  106.                          above.

  109.  DISC INFORMATION
  110.  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------  If 'Show free space on disc' is selected then a disc information window
  111.  will open once compaction is complete. This shows the disc name, the size
  112.  of the disc, the amount of free and used space and how full the disc is (as
  113.  a percentage).
