- BackLoad v1.00
- ================
-
- © 1995 Unbroken Circle Software
- Author: Tim Wiser
-
- Purpose
- =======
-
- As soon as I got my hard disc installed in December
- 1994 I set about creating a desktop boot file. This
- tended to take ages to load, though, so I started
- looking around for some sort of alternative method
- to load my apps, etc.
-
- This application loads the boot files from the hard
- disc in the background. This means that access is
- achieved within a few seconds instead of ages! It
- quits itself after the boot file has been executed.
- And whilst it's loading all the data it takes just
- 64K of RAM. Nothing compared to the benefits of
- using your Arc whilst it's booting up!
-
- This program is actually a rip-off of a program on
- the Acorn User February 1995 cover disc. I read
- the magazine in the school library and couldn't be
- bothered to wait until I bought my own copy ... so
- I wrote my own version.
-
-
- This version ...
- ================
-
- This version displays a little flashing message in
- the top left corner of your computer. Please note
- that it is only displayed correctly when in 16
- colour modes. It flashes red/grey when the program
- is active (ie. loading a script file).
-
-
- Advantages
- ==========
-
- • Speeds up the boot sequence - a lot.
-
- • You can work whilst your system boots up.
-
- • You can just edit the BootScript file inside the
- !BackLoad application to change the boot file.
-
- • You can open the Task Manager window during boot
- up and see all your previous memory being
- gobbled up by the relocatable module area. Don't
- forget that you can use Acorn User's 'Apps3DMod'
- to free 80K if you use the !NewLook application!
-
- • It only takes up 64K whilst loading
-
- • You can stop the boot-up in the desktop by
- pressing SELECT and ADJUST together and then
- pressing MENU
-
-
- Known limitations
- =================
-
- • Desktop slows down somewhat whilst the task loads
- modules etc.
-
- • Any Filer actions with the SHIFT key depressed
- leads to an 'Address Exception' but the program
- continues anyway.
-
- • No Filer operations allowed:
-
- - *Filer_Run
- - *Run
- - *RMLoad is allowed
-
- • Try to avoid opening any Filer windows whilst the
- system is booting if you have a 2Mb machine and a
- few utilities booted, !NewLook loaded etc. The
- RMA can go up to 100K instead of 34K (well, it
- does on my machine anyway).
-
- • Pinboard operations not recognised.
-
- • Dodgy parsing of the text file. Any suggestions?
-
-
- Creating your boot files
- ========================
-
- Creating your personal boot file is not plain
- sailing at all. You cannot use 'Filer_Run' or 'Run'
- commands in the script. This is due to the way
- the program works. If you want to use these
- commands I recommend that you use !BackLoad in
- conjunction with a standard RISC OS boot file or a
- similar RISC OS (2) boot sequence. Likewise, any
- operations connected with the RISC OS 3 Pinboard
- utility should be done via another boot file,
- these commands include:
-
- - Backdrop (to backdrop a sprite)
- - Pin (to place a file on the backdrop)
-
- You should ensure that the last line in the boot
- file is a carriage return (press ENTER in !Edit to
- start a new line and then save the file).
-
- If you want to make comments in your script, you
- can do so as long as you add a # at the start of
- the line (eg. 'This is a message' would be '# This
- is a message'). The # sign acts like a | in a !Run
- file.
-
-
- Configuring the application
- ===========================
-
- You can tell !BackLoad to not beep when it quits
- by adding the line '-nobeep' to the boot sequence.
- Removing this line will return the beep. Please
- note that this command is CASE SENSITIVE and
- !BackLoad won't recognise it if you type something
- like -NoBeep, -NOBEEP or -NoBeEp. So there.
- And don't forget the '-' at the start of the line.
- It looks flashy - that's why it's there.
-
- In a future version there will be a configuring
- window for doing all of this, as well as allowing
- for scripts that aren't stored inside the !BackLoad
- directory.
-
-
- Thanks
- ======
-
- Thanks to the person who wrote the WimpRedraw app
- that I've used. I tried using !NewLook's system but
- that just changed the screen mode and caused a big
- (and very annoying flicker). Using the WimpRedraw
- application you get an instant redraw.
- I got this application off the 'Really Useful CD
- ROM'.
-
-
- Legalities
- ==========
-
- This application is public domain. You can copy it
- and distribute it as freely as you want - as long
- as all files are left intact and unchanged. If you
- want some more software of the same ilk, sillies
- and even some excellent music, then contact me at
- the address below and I'll send you some stuff by
- me and my group (The Unbroken Circle).
- Yes indeed, for those who've heard of us, I'm the
- one known in the group as the Mad Cat.
-
- I'll even plug our best ever product: ARV. This was
- reviewed in Acorn User issue January 1995 (PD page)
- by Paul Wheatley - he loves it. I suggest you send
- me a fiver (or cheque payable to Tim Wiser) and I'll
- send you two discs and documentation for the game.
- It's a text adventure with digitised graphics,
- sound and humourous plot, characters etc. It does,
- however, carry a fifteen rating.
