  1. Upgrading from older versions of ReadNews
  2. =========================================

  4. There have been many significant changes made to ReadNews since the last
  5. public release. In particular, the NewsBase has changed slightly and the
  6. config files have been split up, and new ones added.
  7.  
  8. Any patches, changes or additions you have made to your copy of ReadNews
  9. will most likely not work with this new version (many of them will however
  10. be redundant, I suspect).

  13. BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE, BACKUP YOUR EXISTING READNEWS INSTALLATION

  16. To upgrade to the new newsbase, the convertor "BuildActiv" has been
  17. provided. To use it do the following:
  18.  
  19. - Rename/move your existing !NewsDir elsewhere, and copy the new empty
  20.   one into its place.
  21.  
  22. - Open both the old and new NewsDirs, and copy/move the contents of the
  23.   "News" subdirectory from the old NewsDir to the same relative position
  24.   in the new one.
  25.  
  26. - Double-Click on the new !NewsDir.
  27.  
  28. - Run "BuildActiv". This program scans the news database, deleting ~seq
  29.   files and building a list of newsgroups and sequence numbers in the
  30.   Active file. BuildActiv can be used at any time if you lose your Active
  31.   file for some reason.

  33. Now you can install ReadNews and Incorp themselves. Do NOT copy across
  34. any config files from the old applications to the new ones, as their
  35. contents will have changed. Instead, simply reconfigure each application
  36. from within after you have started it.

  38. Active File Management
  39. ======================

  41. I am now using a standard Active file to store newsgroup information, and
  42. support the following flags on the end of each line in the file:
  43.   'y' - normal posting to this group is allowed
  44.   'n' - posting to this group is disabled
  45.   'x' - this group is invisible, and no articles either local or remote
  46.         will be posted here

  48. If you are familiar with standard Active file format you will know there
  49. are two other flags, 'm' and '='. Do not use these, as they are not yet
  50. supported. In fact '=' will cause serious confusion. You have been warned.

  52. Additionally I don't use the second numeric field (number of lowest article
  53. in newsgroup) yet.

  55. The order in which groups occur in the Active file is the order in which
  56. ReadNews will display them. So you can, for example, move your Email groups
  57. to the top of the list, and junk and test groups to the bottom.
