  1. A brief history of !NetReader
  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  3. For people who don't know my software, my version numbers start at
  4. 0.01 and go up in steps of 0.01 when I give copies to other people.
  5. All versions below 1.00 are beta test versions and liable to have
  6. loads of bugs in them because I am still developing the software.
  7. Version 1.00 is the first bug free (I hope) version and versions above
  8. 1.00 are enhancements or minor bug fixes of the previous version.
  9. I don't update the version number until I give someone a copy of it, hence
  10. there may be twenty different upgrades between 0.01 and 0.02, but 0.01 was
  11. the last copy given to someone before I gave out 0.02. If you have 
  12. any queries regarding version numbers, please do not hesitate to contact me.

  14. v0.01     (6th Oct 1994) - UPLOADED TO CIX
  15.           Original release version (just about working)
  16.           - probably quite a few bugs, but I thought I'd let people see what
  17.             I was writing, and offer any comments.

  19. v0.02     (23rd Oct 1994) - SENT TO ACORN COMPUTING MAGAZINE
  20.           Bug fix - Floating point exception when a message with 0 lines is
  21.                     decoded.
  22.           Feature - ... line(s) skipped ... added to reply file where a 
  23.                         non-continous section of text is being quoted.
  24.           Feature - To quote <name> added when quoting messages, together
  25.                     with 'to quote again' when making subsequent quotes from
  26.                     the same message.
  27.                     The exact wording can be changed by editing the
  28.                     !NetReader.Resources.Messages file. BE CAREFUL THOUGH!
  29.           Bug fix - File open errors now cause !NetReader to suffer a
  30.                     recoverable error instead of quitting.
  31.           Feature - "Lines: x" now added automatically to reply headers.
  32.           Feature - Reply routine re-written to fix a few bugs and include
  33.                     long signatures.
  34.           Feature - "Re:" added automatically to subject line if you reply
  35.                     to a message that is not already a reply.
  36.           Feature - References: header line added to replies to thread reply.                   Feature - The ability to delete 'tagged' messages.
  37.           Feature - Ability to drag text files into the reply window.
  38.           Feature - Ability to enter 'new' messages.

  40. v0.03    (27th Oct 1994)
  41.           a)  Speeded up deletion of messages by doing multiple messages in
  42.               one go.
  43.           b)  Changed 'Continue' icon to 'OK' icon in warning window.
  44.           c)  Changed colour of hourglass (only on RISC OS 3) when storing 
  45.               message.
  46.           d)  Fixed bug where multiple deletes didn't work correctly.
  47.           e)  Rearranged 'Choices' window to provide options for private
  48.               replies.

  50. v0.04    (7th Nov 1994)                 **** MAJOR UPDATE ****
  51.           a)  Reset no. of deletions when loading new file (bug fix)
  52.           b)  Modified loader routine to automatically distinguish between
  53.               cr,lf and lf separated lines in the message input file.
  54.           c)  Changed warning icons from simple 'OK' and 'Cancel' to slightly
  55.               more descriptive ones.
  56.           d)  Added 'Private' reply facility.
  57.           e)  Facility to choose the line separators of reply files.
  58.           f)  Added the ability to change the value of tab stops used to
  59.               display messages. (usually only relevant to signatures)
  60.           g)  Added explode feature (see !Help for more info)
  61.           h)  Amended purge routine so that when deleting messages, only
  62.               those that have been read will be deleted. Not those that
  63.               haven't.
  64.           i)  Added 'Utils' menu (see !Help for more info)
  65.           j)  Fixed bug in message reader so that ctrl codes below 32 are
  66.               filtered out.
  67.           k)  'Find self' option added (see !Help for more info)
  68.           l)  References to your user ID are automatically highlighted.
  69.           m)  Fixed a whole host of minor bugs in the reply editor - mainly
  70.               where the cursor position got confused resulting in corrupted
  71.               window data occasionally.
  72.           n)  Added 'Reference to self' led to main control window.
  73.           o)  Removed bug whereby 'Explode' routine gave filename error if
  74.               the subject contained an invalid character.
  75.           p)  Fixed bug where too many lines were added between reply text 
  76.               and signature (maxry%) when multiple replies were sent.

  78. v0.05     (21st Nov 1994)
  79.           a)  Modified age routine to bin messages older than OR EQUAL to the
  80.               age set in choices.
  81.           b)  Amended quotes so that they wrap words to the start of the next
  82.               line, rather than truncating half way through a word.
  83.           c)  Added short 'bleep' to notify when long messages have been
  84.               truncated.
  85.           d)  Amended title page to load at the correct sprite allocation area,
  86.               rather than at 20*1024*1024, thus allowing for !SparkFS etc to
  87.               be already load.
  88.           e)  Caret auto-positions when you select send new message.
  89.           f)  'Space' now works correctly at the beginning of reply lines.

  91. v0.06     (1st Dec 1994)
  92.           a)  Made loading of messages multi-tasking if required (so you can 
  93.               carry on working when loading large files)
  94.               For those who want to run at maximum speed (but not do anything in
  95.               the meantime) you can turn it off if required.
  96.           b)  Re-designed 'Choices' window again.
  97.           c)  Amended 'Goto' menu to include subject and user. These have now been
  98.               truncated (subject to 38 chars, name to 20 chars) to fit them into
  99.               the menu structure.
  100.           d)  Added extra 'confirmation' error messages when about to quit or close
  101.               the file.
  102.           e)  Fixed bug where 'Explode' gave 'directory full' error if the directory
  103.               was already ready nearing completion when Exploded.
  104.           f)  Extended message statck slightly to cater for up to around 1000 messages
  105.               in a single file.
  106.           g)  Added ADFS/DOS format to explode filenames. ADFS truncates names to 10
  107.               characters, whereas DOS truncates to 8 characters.

  109. v0.07     (8th Dec 1994)
  110.           a)  Fixed small bug in date evaluation routine.
  111.           b)  Fixed bug in 'Purgefile' routine, so that (hopefully) the read,binned
  112.               files should be deleted ok.
  113.           c)  Added basic thread following to messages.
  114.           d)  Added support for archived source files.

  116. v0.08     (3rd Mar 1995)
  117.           a) Fixed minor bug in loading routine, to work on RISC PC's.

  119. v0.09     (10th Apr 1995)                 **** MAJOR UPDATE ****
  120.           a) Extended wimpslot size to 416k.
  121.           b) Quotes now miss out blank lines rather than saying "line skipped".
  122.              N.B. Still gives lines skipped if textual lines actually are
  123.              skipped.
  124.           c) Lines now correctly wrap when quoting long lines (making quoted
  125.              lines look a bit more tidy).
  126.           d) Amended reply editor slightly, so that if you click past the end
  127.              of the text, the caret is positioned correctly at the end of the
  128.              line, rather than in the middle of a blank area.
  129.           e) In case of emergency, pressing ESCAPE will now abort loading a 
  130.              message, part way through. Use with care!
  131.           f) Removed bleep from sounding when the thread window opens, as it
  132.              was rather annoying.
  133.           g) A message is now stored if the 'store' is set, irrespective of
  134.              whether the message has already been read or not. This allows
  135.              you to go back to previous messages and store them. However,
  136.              it doesn't stop you from storing a message more than once. This
  137.              action was changed due to popular demand.
  138.           h) Irritating window added, to encourage people to register.
  139.           i) Set loading flag to FALSE if the load is aborted on message 1.
  140.           j) Speeded up loading of messages a tiny bit.
