  10. Welcome to Newsbase 0.54. This message briefly describes some of the
  11. changes since 0.53, the last generally-available versions.

  14. * Filters
  15.  
  16.   Some bugs have been fixed since version 0.53, otherwise these operate
  17.   much the same.
  18.  
  19. * Cosmetics
  20.  
  21.   Further changes to templates and other parts of the user interface, for 
  22.   closer compliance to the Style Guide.
  23.  
  24. * Article compression
  25.  
  26.   Articles can now be compressed to save disc space. Articles are
  27.   compressed during group expiry, and decompressed when requested by a
  28.   client (eg, TTFN). For additional decompression support, copy Acorn's
  29.   "squash" program (from !Squash, supplied with RISC OS) into
  30.   !Newsbase.support.newsbase, where Newsbase will use it as a fallback
  31.   should its own routines fail.

  33. * Expiry scheduling
  34.  
  35.   You can now specify a time of day for expiry to take place, rather than
  36.   it occurring automatically after a debatch. The behaviour when Newsbase
  37.   starts up and finds a scheduled expiry has been missed can also now be set.

  39. * Log file
  40.  
  41.   Newsbase now keeps fairly detailed information in its log file, including
  42.   details of new mail received, mail or news sent, batch files processed,
  43.   groups created or deleted, and any errors which occur.

  45. * Errors
  46.  
  47.   If Newsbase crashes or displays other errors, please report them to me
  48.   at allan@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu, including as much detail as possible. Useful
  49.   information includes:
  50.   - the version number of Newsbase
  51.   - type of computer (Risc PC or Archimedes) & memory size
  52.   - what Newsbase was doing at the time of the error, with related
  53.     information:
  54.     - batch type and size, if the error was during debatch
  55.     - transport type if the error was in sending mail or news
  56.   - any special circumstances (low disc space, low memory, etc).
  57.  
  58.   Newsbase does now keep a fairly detailed logfile: please examine this
  59.   before reporting errors as it may contain useful information.
