- Workbone, Linux audio CD player, by Thomas McWilliams, bodged into
- Workbone2 by Tony Howat.

- RISC-OS Client by Tony Howat, Based on !FreeTerm by Tom Hughes and Tony.
-
- WorkBone and WorkBone 2 are covered by the GPL. The client software is
- FreeWare, distribute without restriction, but anyone intending to make
- a profit through doing so should contact me first.
-
- WorkBone? Why the name?
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- I don't know either.
-
- WorkBone Client for RISC-OS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- This program, in fact, both programs, are bodges. I wanted to be able to
- control the CD drive in my Linux box for audio discs as I would with the
- SCSI CD drive attached directly to my RiscPC. This program does the job,
- and quite nicely, but underneath it is really rather disgusting. I make
- no apologies for this :u)
-
- Why this program is rubbish...
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- It telnets in on port 23, and will probably need root access to umount
- the cd drive and run workbone. Of course, workbone should have been
- adapted into a proper daemon, but I couldn't be bothered. As I said, this
- is a hack. I might improve things once my linux box is on the internet,
- ATM security isn't much of an issue.
-
- There's also quite a lot of redundant code left inside the telnet routines,
- and the program is written to allow multiple sessions, which is generally
- pointless.
-
- WorkBone2, the modified version, is disgusting. Hack bodge patch. Every
- 20ms it sends its status to the client. (read : "Don't bother running this
- on slow links).
-
- When you eject the CD the workbone window closes and you have to re-connect,
- nowt much I can do about this I'm afraid.
-
- Remeber, you get what you pay for.
-
- Why this program is rather good...
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- 1) It impresses people once you've explained what it's actually doing (as
- long as they don't realise it's starting a shell :) )
- 2) It does what I wanted.
- 3) It doesn't use much CPU.
- 4) It's got a nice icon.
- 5) It's got flashy dialogy thingies.
- 6) It works.
- 7) I'm sorry, had I already mentioned that one?
- 8) There are no more good points.
- 9) Oh, it's free!
-
- Getting it running
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- A tar file is supplied which contains workbone2. You should get this
- compiled or use the binary. Take a look at the messages file. It's simply
- a matter of pointing WorkBone at various things.
