  1. How to install FreeNews 0.84
  2. ----------------------------
  3.  
  4. PLEASE NOTE: FreeNews 0.84 is an ALPHA release. These don't generally get
  5.          released very often... Remember that ALPHA releases are released
  6.          BEFORE beta-releases. Therefore I am making no guarantees
  7.          whatsoever of the fitness of purpose for this software.
  8.          
  9.          It is supplied as-is.

  14. Installation
  15. ------------
  16.  
  17. !FreeNews:   This is the main fetcher app.
  18.          Note that in 0.84, FreeNews is a read-only nntp client. It will
  19.          fetch articles, but not post new ones. Sorry. You'll still have
  20.          to use KA9Q for that for the time being. 
  21.          
  22.          The next version that will support posting will be released as
  23.          soon as I get it working :-) [in about a week or so].
  24.          
  25.          !FreeNews can be put anywhere you like. It would seem sensible
  26.          to put this in the same directory as !FreeTerm, as they'll
  27.          both be used at similar times.         
  28.          
  29. !Newsbase:   contains the additional transport information for
  30.          communication with FreeNews. This transport is also an alpha
  31.          release. Copy it to the same directory as your existing 
  32.          !Newsbase to update it.
  33.          
  34. !NewsDir:    Similar to !Newsbase, this consists of transport-related 
  35.          updates to !NewsDir. Simply copy it over your existing !NewsDir.

  37. Setting up
  38. ----------
  39.              [I'm using Newsbase 0.54n -- instructions should be similar
  40.              for other versions]
  41.              
  42. NewsBase:    Run !Newsbase. Click adjust on the icon bar icon.
  43.          Click on the Transports icon.
  44.          The Transport Control Panel will appear. Click on the popup
  45.          icon against "Default news transport", and choose "freenews"
  46.          as a transport.
  47.          
  48.          DO NOT touch source/mail transports. These should be left 
  49.          at KA9Q (or your existing SMTP fetcher).
  50.          
  51.              Save this change.
  52.              
  53. Groups:         Newsbase now looks at <Newsbase$Config>.freenet.Groups for a
  54.          complete list of groups. The transport script 
  55.          <NewsBase$FreeNewsDir>.postfetch takes any new groups and
  56.          appends them here. Unfortunately, Newsbase isn't calling 
  57.          my postfetch routine at the moment... so you'll have to run
  58.          it yourself from time to time when both FreeNews and Newsbase
  59.          are not running.
  60.                       
  61.              FreeNews uses a file <FreeNews$Dir>.Data.AllGroups to list
  62.              all the groups from which every new message will be downloaded.
  63.              A different file will be used at a later release for those
  64.              groups from which headers and selected messages will be
  65.              received.
  66.              
  67. Customisation:
  68.             Certain files will require editing to meet your requirements.
  69.             These are:
  70.             
  71.             !FreeNews.Data.AllGroups
  72.                 to include all of your required groups. If you edit this,
  73.                 run !Newsbase.Transports.freenews.MkGroups to inform Newsbase
  74.                 of your changes.
  75.                 
  76.             !FreeNews.Data.Config
  77.                 to include the name of your news server, and the time 
  78.                 that new news will be searched for. The date/time format is
  79.                 YYMMDD HHMMSS
  80.                 
  81.             !Newsbase.Transports.freenews.SetHost
  82.                 to put your own host name in place of "roundel".

  85. Files:      If you don't want to use !NewsBase, you may find the following
  86.         useful:
  87.         
  88.         FreeNews uses the following files (all found in 
  89.         <FreeNews$Dir>.Data) :
  90.         
  91.             AllGroups    List of newsgroups for fetching, one per line.
  92.             
  93.             Config    Contains 2 lines: News server and time stamp.
  94.             
  95.             IDs        Contains all downloaded IDs. This is used for 
  96.                         avoiding downloading duplicate news. This file 
  97.                         should be trimmed occasionally, deleting old records
  98.                         from the top of the file. This will be automated
  99.                         in a later release. The longer this file, the slower
  100.                         download will be.
  101.                         
  102.             NewGroups    This file is where any new newsgroups will be 
  103.                     placed.
  104.                     
  105.             NewNews    This file is where recently downloaded news is placed
  106.                     before Newsbase steals it for debatching.
  107.                     
  108.             *~        Files whose names end in "~" are backups. Thus 
  109.                     "NewNews~" will be the last news file downloaded,
  110.                     safe from Newsbase's clutches!
  111.  
  112. Running:
  113.             Once set up, simply double click on the icon in the filer 
  114.             window once freenet is running, and choose "NNTP Kick" from the
  115.             iconbar icon.
  116.             
  117.             The text beneath the (poor) iconbar icon (if you can design a 
  118.             better one....) acts as a very simple status.
  119.             
  120.             Waiting    Waiting for you to kick it into life.
  121.             
  122.             Connecting    FreeNews has contacted the remote host, and is
  123.                     waiting for a reply.
  124.                     
  125.          Connected    Contact made. Initial communication with server.
  126.          
  127.         New Groups    Downloading new groups.
  128.         
  129.                New News     Downloading a list of new news message ids.
  130.                    
  131.         Articles    Getting individual news articles. This will flicker
  132.                     each time a new article starts being downloaded.
  133.              
  134.             Finished    All done. You can now log out.
  135.                or
  136.             Fatal Err   Things have gone wrong in an unexpected way.
  137.                         News download has completed. You may now log out.
  138.                         Please send me snippets of the log if you get one
  139.                         of these. 
  140.                         
  141. Logging:
  142.         is carried out by Stewart Brodie's !Syslog package.
  143.         Different levels of *SyslogD_Debug from 0-9 are supported. The
  144.         larger the number, the more information is logged, and the slower
  145.         FreeNews becomes. Sensible values for 0.84 are 5 or 7.
  146.         This is set in the !Run file.
