- How to install FreeNews 0.84
- ----------------------------
-
- PLEASE NOTE: FreeNews 0.84 is an ALPHA release. These don't generally get
- released very often... Remember that ALPHA releases are released
- BEFORE beta-releases. Therefore I am making no guarantees
- whatsoever of the fitness of purpose for this software.
-
- It is supplied as-is.
- If you come across any bugs, please direct them to me:
-
- freenews@roundel.demon.co.uk
-
- Installation
- ------------
-
- !FreeNews: This is the main fetcher app.
- Note that in 0.84, FreeNews is a read-only nntp client. It will
- fetch articles, but not post new ones. Sorry. You'll still have
- to use KA9Q for that for the time being.
-
- The next version that will support posting will be released as
- soon as I get it working :-) [in about a week or so].
-
- !FreeNews can be put anywhere you like. It would seem sensible
- to put this in the same directory as !FreeTerm, as they'll
- both be used at similar times.
-
- !Newsbase: contains the additional transport information for
- communication with FreeNews. This transport is also an alpha
- release. Copy it to the same directory as your existing
- !Newsbase to update it.
-
- !NewsDir: Similar to !Newsbase, this consists of transport-related
- updates to !NewsDir. Simply copy it over your existing !NewsDir.
-
- Setting up
- ----------
- [I'm using Newsbase 0.54n -- instructions should be similar
- for other versions]
-
- NewsBase: Run !Newsbase. Click adjust on the icon bar icon.
- Click on the Transports icon.
- The Transport Control Panel will appear. Click on the popup
- icon against "Default news transport", and choose "freenews"
- as a transport.
-
- DO NOT touch source/mail transports. These should be left
- at KA9Q (or your existing SMTP fetcher).
-
- Save this change.
-
- Groups: Newsbase now looks at <Newsbase$Config>.freenet.Groups for a
- complete list of groups. The transport script
- <NewsBase$FreeNewsDir>.postfetch takes any new groups and
- appends them here. Unfortunately, Newsbase isn't calling
- my postfetch routine at the moment... so you'll have to run
- it yourself from time to time when both FreeNews and Newsbase
- are not running.
-
- FreeNews uses a file <FreeNews$Dir>.Data.AllGroups to list
- all the groups from which every new message will be downloaded.
- A different file will be used at a later release for those
- groups from which headers and selected messages will be
- received.
-
- Customisation:
- Certain files will require editing to meet your requirements.
- These are:
-
- !FreeNews.Data.AllGroups
- to include all of your required groups. If you edit this,
- run !Newsbase.Transports.freenews.MkGroups to inform Newsbase
- of your changes.
-
- !FreeNews.Data.Config
- to include the name of your news server, and the time
- that new news will be searched for. The date/time format is
- YYMMDD HHMMSS
-
- !Newsbase.Transports.freenews.SetHost
- to put your own host name in place of "roundel".
-
-
- Files: If you don't want to use !NewsBase, you may find the following
- useful:
-
- FreeNews uses the following files (all found in
- <FreeNews$Dir>.Data) :
-
- AllGroups List of newsgroups for fetching, one per line.
-
- Config Contains 2 lines: News server and time stamp.
-
- IDs Contains all downloaded IDs. This is used for
- avoiding downloading duplicate news. This file
- should be trimmed occasionally, deleting old records
- from the top of the file. This will be automated
- in a later release. The longer this file, the slower
- download will be.
-
- NewGroups This file is where any new newsgroups will be
- placed.
-
- NewNews This file is where recently downloaded news is placed
- before Newsbase steals it for debatching.
-
- *~ Files whose names end in "~" are backups. Thus
- "NewNews~" will be the last news file downloaded,
- safe from Newsbase's clutches!
-
- Running:
- Once set up, simply double click on the icon in the filer
- window once freenet is running, and choose "NNTP Kick" from the
- iconbar icon.
-
- The text beneath the (poor) iconbar icon (if you can design a
- better one....) acts as a very simple status.
-
- Waiting Waiting for you to kick it into life.
-
- Connecting FreeNews has contacted the remote host, and is
- waiting for a reply.
-
- Connected Contact made. Initial communication with server.
-
- New Groups Downloading new groups.
-
- New News Downloading a list of new news message ids.
-
- Articles Getting individual news articles. This will flicker
- each time a new article starts being downloaded.
-
- Finished All done. You can now log out.
- or
- Fatal Err Things have gone wrong in an unexpected way.
- News download has completed. You may now log out.
- Please send me snippets of the log if you get one
- of these.
-
- Logging:
- is carried out by Stewart Brodie's !Syslog package.
- Different levels of *SyslogD_Debug from 0-9 are supported. The
- larger the number, the more information is logged, and the slower
- FreeNews becomes. Sensible values for 0.84 are 5 or 7.
- This is set in the !Run file.
-
-
- Good luck, have fun and report any bugs to me please!
-
- John.
