  11. Loading
  12. -------

  14. To load MZX, double click on the !MZX icon. This will install the MZX icon
  15. onto the icon bar. Alternatively, click on a file of type SNA (&CEF) or
  16. Z80 (&CEE). This will also install the icon bar icon, but will pre-load
  17. the snapshot file.

  20. Starting
  21. --------
  22.  
  23. To start up the emulation, click on the MZX icon bar icon. Clicking with
  24. Select will open a multitasking MZX window; clicking with Adjust will
  25. switch to single task mode. Note that single tasking may not be possible
  26. at present with some monitor types; normal (TV 50Hz) monitors and 
  27. multiscan monitors should be able to cope. In addition, attempting to
  28. select single tasking mode will crash a Risc PC 600.

  31. Changing between modes
  32. ----------------------

  34. In multitasking mode, clicking Adjust on the icon bar icon will switch to
  35. single task mode. (Clicking with Select will always open the MZX emulation
  36. window.) In single tasking mode, you can return to the desktop by pressing
  37. Alt-F1. In multitasking mode, clicking Select in the emulation window will
  38. gain the Input focus, allowing keys to be interpreted as Spectrum
  39. keypresses.

  42. Loading a snapshot
  43. ------------------

  45. At any time after starting the emulator, you may load a snapshot file of
  46. type SNA or Z80 by either dragging its icon to the icon bar icon, or by
  47. dragging it into the !MZX emulation window.

  50. Options
  51. -------
  52.  
  53. The Options dialogue box is obtained from the MZX menu. The options are:
  54.  
  55.          Sound: Switch sound on/off. (Note that sound does not work on newer
  56.                 machines thanks to Acorn's cost-cutting, and it also incurs
  57.                 a slight speed penalty.) Sound is only available in single
  58.                 task mode.
  59.  
  60.  Speed Control: Enable/disable speed limiting. This is useful on ARM3
  61.                 machines where the emulation runs too fast. Note that it
  62.                 is only active in single tasking mode, and can disrupt
  63.                 the sound output.
  64.  
  65.         Freeze: This option pauses the emulator. It is automatically
  66.                 switched on when you close the MZX emulation window.
  67.  
  68. Acorn Joystick: This switches between keyboard joystick emulation (keypad
  69.                 keys 1-4 and Enter behave as a Kempston joystick) to real
  70.                 joystick emulation (Acorn-compatible joystick behaves as
  71.                 a Kempston joystick).
  72.  
  73.        Loading: This is the amount by which the speed control option slows
  74.                 down the emulation in single-tasking mode, and is selectable
  75.                 from 1-255.
  76.  
  77.        Refresh: This is the number of frames between window redraw in
  78.                 multitasking mode. The higher the value, the faster the
  79.                 emulation will run, but high values also make the display
  80.                 appear jerky and unresponsive.
  81.  
  82.    Diagnostics: Enable/disable diagnostic printing. This may provide
  83.                 explanations as to why a snapshot file fails to work. It
  84.                 should be left off in normal use.
  85.  
  86. Note that these options have associated key-combinations:
  87.  
  88. Freeze: Alt-F9
  89. Unfreeze: F10
  90. Sound on: Alt-F5
  91. Sound off: Alt-F6
  92. Increase loading: Alt-F4
  93. Decrease loading: Alt-F3
  94.  
  95. Volume up: Alt-F8
  96. Volume down: Alt-F7

  99. Saving snapshots
  100. ----------------

  102. Pressing Alt-F2 will save a snapshot to the file <snapshot$file>. Use
  103.  
  104. *set snapshot$file <filename>
  105.  
  106. to specify where you want the file saved; the default is a file 'SnapShot'
  107. in the same directory as MZX. (Drag save will be implemented in the next
  108. release.)

  111. Quitting
  112. --------
  113.  
  114. Select Quit from the MZX menu, or press Alt-Q.

  117. Reset
  118. -----
  119.  
  120. Pressing Alt-R has the same effect as the Spectrum 48+ reset button.
