Light Cycle
~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a very simple but quite enjoyable game.
The idea is to trap your opponent in your light
exhaust as quickly as possible. The two players
start off at opposite diagonals of the game grid.
They both remain at exactly the same speed and you
simply control the direction in which your cycle
moves. The exhaust starts from where your cycle
starts and follows your path to the current position
of your cycle.
This is just basically glamourising the fact that
this game consists of a blank screen with two
coloured lines competing for supremacy.
Despite the extreme simplicity it is a fun game.
So play it!
Scoring
~~~~~~~
There are 3 ways of gaining and losing score : -
¹/ Crashing into your own colour (-3000 pts)
²/ Crashing into anything else (-1000 pts)
³/ Passing through green scoring zone (100 pts)
In practice negative scores are crap and so
instead of minusing points off your score we simply
add score to your opponents.
The 100 pts for green scoring zone accumulates
quickly with time so the longer you stay in the zone
the more score you get.
There is a counter up at the top of the screen
which quickly plummets to zero. If you manage to
trap your opponent before this reaches zero you get
this amount of bonus points.
Obstacles
~~~~~~~~~
This version of light cycle incorporates five
obstacles. Some contain green scoring zones with the
obstacles. Others are either are just hazards.
Controls
~~~~~~~~
At the moment the controls are set and cannot be
redefined. They are : -
Player One Player Two
White Blue
Start - Top Right Bottom Left
LEFT - Z <Copy>
RIGHT - X <Pg Down>
UP - F <Keypad 8>
DOWN - C <Keypad 4>
The game does support a One Player option but the
fun of this game is almost entirely dependent on two
players so only use it in serious emergencies.
The computer opponent is also very badly
programmed so it is not much of a challenge. Sorry!
Light Cycle was inspired by a type-in game from
BBC Micro User and also by the film Tron. In fact it
is just a clone of both the original Light Cycle and
the game Tron with a couple of refinements.
What the future holds?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next version of Light Cycle will probably
support 4-players crammed offensively onto a single
keyboard. It will however also support the GamesWare
PowerPads to try and minimise the congestion.
