  6. 4on this CD have been archived using ArcFSr/w except for the

  10. 4Gzip reduces the size of the named  files  using  Lempel-Ziv
  11. 4coding  (LZ77).  Whenever possible, each file is replaced by
  12. 4one with the extension .gz, while keeping the same ownership
  13. 4modes,  access  and modification times.  (The default extension 
  14. 4is -gz for VMS, z for MSDOS, OS/2  and  Atari.)  If  no files are
  15. 4specified, the standard input is compressed to the standard output.
  16. 4If the new file  name  is  too  long,  gzip truncates  it and keeps 
  17. 4the  original  file  name  in the compressed file.  Gzip will only
  18. 4attempt to compress regular files.
