- Chinese for the Archimedes

-
- CCR Version 1.00 (© Wookie Software).
- (See release note for details of newer versions).
-
- This is a simple Chinese character reader for use with 'guobiao' encoded
- files. It provides support for the simplified characters used in modern
- China, but not for traditional characters ('big5' encoded files), although
- this will be implemented in future - get in touch if you really need it.
-
- It's release follows on from 'FlashCard' and it uses the same variable
- 'ChineseFonts$Path' to find the Character bitmaps. It differs from
- 'FlashCard' in that it doesn't use the 'HBF' interface to access these, the
- path is wired directly into the program code. This means you don't have the
- option of using other fonts at present. The 'HBF' interface doesn't provide
- the option of accessing the files from RAM and this is essential because
- redrawing the window is painfully slow otherwise. I'll hopefully write my
- own version of this some time.
-
- It only needs the file 'ChineseFonts:cclib.24' to work. This file is loaded
- into memory to speed up redraws so you have to have at least 600K free -
- more for large text files. It would be simple enough to allow the 16x16
- version of cclib to be used if anyone has problems with 1Mb machines and
- this would allow more characters to be on the screen at one time too. As it
- is, a full page won't quite fit on, even in mode 31, so you have to scroll
- from side to side. I still think the 24x24 characters look better, though.
-
- Chinese guobiao files can be obtained by ftp from IFCSS (ifcss.org) or other
- sources. See the ReadMe files with FlashCard for more details. Two sample
- files from there are included in the directory !ccr.samples. Just drag them
- to the icon or the open window. There are LOTS more at IFCSS, including
- novels, poems, articles, etc. etc.
-
- I think that's about it. It's a very simple program to use. As with
- Flashcard, I've only tested it on an A540 with an SVGA monitor. Modes 27 and
- 31 are probably best, but others should work too. Redrawing may be a problem
- on slower machines. There are bound to be bugs because I've only just
- written it. There seems to be a problem with some characters which appear
- as messy blobs from time to time, but it's not too major.
-
- Serious Bit (same as for FlashCard).
