  6.                      Welcome to PC-FASTYPE/CGA Version 4.1

  9.           PC-FASTYPE/CGA is a typing tutorial program SPECIFICALLY designed
  10.      for IBM-PC and PS/2 styled keyboards on computers running under
  11.      MS-DOS.  The quick-start instructions below will get you going right
  12.      away.
  13.  
  14.           PC-FASTYPE/CGA also requires COLOR.  You MUST have a
  15.      Color/Graphics Adapter Card (CGA) or equivalent (EGA/VGA) on your
  16.      computer or PC-FASTYPE/CGA won't work.
  17.  
  18.           If your PC is not equipped for color graphics display, then you
  19.      should be using PC-FASTYPE/MONO which can be run on any PC without
  20.      regard to the type of monitor attached.  It uses character-based line-
  21.      graphics to simulate the screen keyboard display.  Contact us for more
  22.      information about PC-FASTYPE/MONO.

  25.      HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
  26.           PC-FASTYPE/CGA is distributed on one 360KB 5.25" floppy, or one
  27.      720KB 3.50" mini-floppy and requires the following minimum equipment
  28.      to run properly:

  30.           o  IBM PC, XT, PS/2, 286, 386, or IBM Compatible
  31.           o  MS-DOS - All versions from 2.0 and up
  32.           o  256KB Memory
  33.           o  Color Graphics capability (CGA/EGA/VGA)
  34.           o  1 Floppy disk drive; 3.5" or 5.25"
  35.           o  Keyboard: either the 101-Key Enhanced with the bar-shaped
  36.              enter key, or the AT-Style with the large L-shaped enter key.

  39.      TO LOAD:
  40.      From Floppy Disk Drive: Place the disk in drive A: and type:
  41.  
  42.             ENFT to start PC-FASTYPE/CGA with the 101-Key Enhanced keyboard
  43.             ATFT to start PC-FASTYPE/CGA with the AT-Style keyboard
  44.  
  45.           followed by the ENTER key.  For example, the command:
  46.  
  47.                          A:> enft <enter>
  48.  
  49.           will start PC-FASTYPE/CGA from the A: floppy drive for the 101-
  50.      Key Enhanced keyboard.

  53.      Fixed Disk Drive: First create a sub-directory then copy the entire
  54.      contents of the disk to the new directory. Change to the new directory
  55.      and type ENFT or ATFT followed by the ENTER key.

  58.      TO RUN:
  59.           PRESS ANY KEY TO GET PAST THE TITLE SCREEN AND SHAREWARE
  60.      INFORMATION SCREEN.  After these screens are displayed and the tables
  61.      loaded, the Main Menu will be displayed.  The menu selector bar will
  62.      be resting on the 'Begin Typing' selection.  Just press the Enter key
  63.      or function key F10 to start a typing drill of the HOME keys.  To
  64.      return to the Main Menu during typing,  press the Escape key.

  67.      WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:
  68.           For DRILLS:  Place the fingers of each hand on the home keys
  69.      (ASDF JKL;) and type each letter as you are prompted for it.  The
  70.      program selects the letters randomly.  The number of characters you
  71.      have to successfully type is displayed before you start.  When the
  72.      drill is finished your WPM and other statistics will be displayed in
  73.      the text panel.

  75.           For EXERCISES:  lines of text will be displayed above the screen
  76.      keyboard; type each character pointed to by the house-shaped cursor
  77.      () and when you reach the  symbol or end of the line, press the
  78.      enter key (for "carriage-return"), or the space bar.  When you finish
  79.      typing the exercise your WPM and other statistics will be displayed in
  80.      the text panel.

  83.      SELECTING MENU ITEMS:
  84.           Use the arrow keys (cursor keys) to move the menu selector bar up
  85.      and down the menu.  Select the drill, exercise, or option by pressing
  86.      the enter key when the item you want is highlighted by the menu
  87.      selector bar.  You can use the function keys as a short-cut.

  90.      WHILE RUNNING:
  91.           MENUS:
  92.             There are 5 drill, exercise, and feature selection menus and 3
  93.             sub-menus for selecting additional keys to learn.  The primary
  94.             menus can be displayed by pressing function keys F1 to F5
  95.             anytime while the screen keyboard is displayed.

  97.           <Esc>ape key:
  98.             Pressing the Escape key anytime during a drill or exercise will
  99.             cause the drill or exercise to terminate and your current WPM
  100.             to be displayed; pressing the Escape key again will display the
  101.             menu where you started the exercise.

  103.           QuickHELP:
  104.             ALL menus have the QuickHELP Facility available.  For all
  105.             menus, the function key F1 is always the HELP key.  When you
  106.             select HELP, a QuickHELP Facility  Menu will be displayed; the
  107.             selector bar will rest on the item matching your help request.
  108.             Follow the instructions given on the bottom of the menu.

  111.      EVALUATION PERIOD:
  112.           You are licensed to operate PC-FASTYPE/CGA on your PC for testing
  113.      and evaluation as to its usefulness to you, on a trial basis for 30
  114.      days.  We believe this to be a fair and equitable time period for
  115.      evaluation and we trust your good judgement and sense of fair play in
  116.      making a decision regarding registration.

  119.      HERCULES:
  120.           PC-FASTYPE/CGA will work on a PC equipped with a Hercules
  121.      Monochrome Graphics Adaptor card IF you also use a Color Graphics
  122.      (CGA) emulator program for the Hercules called "HGCIBM".  Better yet,
  123.      you can use PC-FASTYPE/MONO which displays the keyboards using
  124.      character graphics.  In all other respects it's identical to the CGA
  125.      version.

  128.      OLD-STYLE PC KEYBOARD:
  129.           If your PC is equipped with the older "classic" style PC
  130.      keyboard, the one with the vertical ENTER key and the too-far-spaced
  131.      shift keys, we have a keyboard display you can use with this version
  132.      of PC-FASTYPE/CGA.  Let us know if you want this keyboard display, and
  133.      include an additional $5.00 when you register.  The MONO version
  134.      includes this keyboard.

  137.      DOCUMENTATION:
  138.           The PC-FASTYPE/CGA User Guide is included on this disk as a self-
  139.      extracting 'ZIP' file.  This means the User Guide text has been
  140.      'compressed' to save space on the disk.  If you register, you'll
  141.      receive a handsomely printed and bound User Guide.

  144.      How To 'UN-COMPRESS' The User Guide:
  145.           ZIP'd files can be 'un-compressed', or reconstructed without the
  146.      need for special programs.   A self-extracting ZIP file is an
  147.      executable file with a .EXE extension.  By simply typing in the name
  148.      of the self-extracting ZIP file, the User Guide reconstruction process
  149.      will be performed.  To view or print the PC-FASTYPE/CGA User Guide
  150.      perform the following simple steps:

  153.           1. Copy the file named FTDOC.EXE to your hard disk or
  154.              to another floppy.  (If you try to uncompress the
  155.              file on THIS disk you will run out of space.)
  156.           2. Make that drive the default drive, and at the prompt
  157.              type in the following command:
  158.  
  159.                          ftdoc <enter key>
  160.  
  161.              and the User Guide will extract itself into a
  162.              printable, plain text document.
  163.           3. You will now have a file called FASTYPE.DOC on your
  164.              disk. Verify this by typing 'DIR FASTYPE.DOC' at the
  165.              prompt.
  166.  
  167.           4. To print the User Guide on your printer, first make
  168.              sure you have enough paper - the User Guide is about
  169.              50 pages long.  Be sure your printer is turned ON,
  170.              and the first page is positioned at top-of-form.
  171.              Then type the following command at the prompt:

  173.                     copy fastype.doc prn  <enter key>
  174.  
  175.           5. Your printer will print the PC-FASTYPE/CGA User
  176.              Guide on about fifty pages of paper.

  182.      your name, address and daytime phone number, the version number of
  183.      PC-FASTYPE/CGA you are using, and a short message.  We'll return your

  187.      DATED SOFTWARE:
  188.           If today's date is a year or more later than the file dates on
  189.      this distribution disk than please contact Trendtech Corporation for
  190.      information about the current version of PC-FASTYPE/CGA.  Shareware
  191.      tends to "acquire a life of its own" once it's distributed; not all
  192.      vendors will bother to acquire the latest version from the author.
  193.      That is why you should buy Shareware from a disk vendor who is an
  194.      authorized "Associate Member of the A.S.P."

  197.      VIRUSES:
  198.           You can only be sure of getting a top-quality virus-free version
  199.      of any ASP Shareware product by obtaining your copy directly from the
  200.      author, or from a disk vendor who is an Associate Member of the
  201.      Association of Shareware Professionals, or from a reputable BBS
  202.      service.  Be suspicious of any program you download from a BBS whose
  203.      file dates or copyright notices are more than two years old; if it's a
  204.      Shareware product, contact the author directly for information about
  205.      current versions.

  208.      TO PRINT THIS FILE:
  209.           You can print this readme file to your printer by simply issuing
  210.      the following MS-DOS command at the prompt:

  212.           1. First insert the PC-FASTYPE/CGA disk in drive A.
  213.           2. Then make sure your printer is turned on and the paper
  214.              is set at top-of-form.
