- Manual Formats and Notations
-
- The following are the formats and notations used in this manual. Please
- read them carefully as they will help you in your understanding of how
- to use QDISK.
-
- <> Brackets of this type surround a single key or combination
- key stroke. <F1> means to press the F1 function key.
-
- (M/O) This symbol means a function or command has the ability to
- operate on multiple files at one time. This is done by marking
- the files with the gray <+> key. (See "Utility Commands" for
- more information.)
-
- <Ctrl-F1> A combination symbol of this type means to hold down the
- <Ctrl> key and press the <F1> function key.
-
- nnn This symbol is used in command line arguments as a
- user-defined number.
-
- When describing program functions in this manual, only the menu commands
- are given. You have the ability to customize QDISK. Using QDINSTAL, you
- may set function keys to correspond to each menu item. In addition, a list
- of control key combinations that are not configurable are described in
- Appendix A.
- Quick Start Instructions
-
- To install QDISK, place your QDISK diskette in your floppy drive, log on
- to your floppy drive and run the batch file INSTALL. This will copy
- QDISK onto your hard disk. If you don't have a hard disk, copy all of the
- files from the QDISK distribution disk to your boot floppy. Type
- "QDINSTAL" and press the <Enter> key at the DOS prompt. This will start
- the QDISK installation program. The only item field which you MUST set
- up is the directory for QDISK to store the overlay and help files. To set
- up this directory, press the <F1> key and then the <F9> key. Then enter
- the drive and path where the files may be found. Press the <ESC> key
- to return to the main menu. To record these changes press the <F10> key.
-
- To activate QDISK, either hold down the <Alt> key and press the <Tab> key
- or hold down the <Alt> and <Left-Shift> keys at the same time. A file list
- of the current directory will appear on the screen and a menu will appear
- on the bottom line of your screen. This is the main menu. To access the
- menu, press either the <Tab> key or the </> key. To select the menu
- option you wish to use press the first capital letter of the menu selection,
- or use the arrow keys to move the highlighted bar to the menu option and
- press <Enter>. The <Tab> or </> key must be pressed to access the menu
- prior to performing any options in the menu. To Exit QDISK from the main
- screen, press <Esc> and you will be placed back in your previous
- application.
-
- More complete setup and installation instructions are in the sections
- "Installation Instructions" and "Command Line Switches."
- File Commands
-
- To access most of these functions, select the 'FILE' option on the main
- menu and then select the option requested on the file sub-menu.
-
- Copy a file (M/O)
-
- To copy a file, move the highlighted bar to the file you wish to copy.(1)
- Then select the COPY' option on the file sub-menu. You will then be asked
- to enter the file destination(2). This may be any valid DOS disk,
- directory, or file name. If you have specified a default destination path
- (see "Set Default Destination Path" in the "Directory Functions" section)
- you may press the <Enter> key without entering a destination path and the
- file(s) will be copied to this path. If there is not enough room on the
- destination disk for a designated file, you will be asked to change the
- destination disk or choose not to copy that file. Once you have answered
- this question, the system will continue to copy the rest of the marked
- files. If the 'CONFIRM' option is ON (see "Toggle Confirm" option in the
- "Display Controls" section) and the file you are copying exists in the
- destination directory, you will be asked if you wish to overwrite the file.
- You may answer 'A' if you wish to overwrite ALL duplicate files during
- this copy operation. If the 'CONFIRM' option is OFF, the file(s) will be
- copied automatically.
-
- Delete a file (M/O)
-
- To delete a file, move the highlighted bar to the file you wish to delete.(1)
- Then select the 'DELETE' option on the file sub-menu. If the 'CONFIRM'
- option on the setup sub-menu is ON (see "Toggle Confirm" option in the
- "Display Controls" section) you will be asked to enter a 'Y' to delete the
- file(s) or an 'N' to cancel the delete function. If the 'CONFIRM' option is
- OFF, the file(s) will be deleted automatically. There is one exception to
- this. If a file has any attributes set other than Archive, you will be
- prompted on whether or not to delete that file regardless of the Confirm
- status. There are 3 possible answers to this prompt. If you answer 'Y',
- the highlighted file will be deleted. If you answer 'N', the highlighted file
- will be skipped. If you answer 'A', then ALL remaining marked files will be
- deleted, regardless of their attributes.
-
- Rename a file
-
- To rename a file, move the highlighted bar to the file you wish to rename.
- Select the 'RENAME' option on the file sub-menu. You may then edit the
- old name or enter a new name for the file. Any valid DOS file name is
- acceptable. To edit the old name, you may use the arrow keys, the <Ins>
- key, and the <Del> key.
-
- Move a file (M/O)
-
- To move a file to a new directory or disk drive, move the highlighted bar
- to the file you wish to move.(1) Then select the 'MOVE' option on the file
- sub-menu. Enter the new directory name,(2) press the <Enter> key, and
- the file(s) will be moved. Any valid EXISTING directory may be used. If
- the directory or disk does not exist, the system will beep and the
- operation will be canceled. Specify the disk drive letter ONLY when the
- destination directory is on a different disk drive.
-
- View a file or directory
-
- To view a file or directory, move the highlighted bar to the file you wish
- to view. Then press the <Enter> key or select the 'VIEW' option on the
- main menu. If you view a directory, you will be shown the contents of
- that directory. In the view mode, you may page up, page down, scroll line
- by line, or shift the text to the sides, 8 characters at a time. The <Home>
- key will take you to the beginning of the file and move the side shift back
- to column 1. The <End> key will take you to the end of the file in column
- 1. In this mode, the "go to a line" <F6>, "search" <F7>, and "repeat
- search" <F8> keys, as described in the next sections, are active. To exit
- the view section, press either the <Esc> or the <Enter> key for a normal
- exit. You also may press the delete, rename or move keys to exit and start
- that function on the viewed file. You may change some of the view options
- on the setup menu. These options are discussed in the 'Display Controls'
- sections. If you have selected the HEX view mode, you may edit the file
- by holding down the <Ctrl> key and pressing 'X'. This will activate the
- HEX editor. Please see "Edit a file while in HEX view mode" for a full
- description of the editor.
-

- out.
-
- Go to a line in the file being viewed

- You will then be asked to enter the line number you wish to view. After
- entering this number, press the <Enter> key and the line requested will
- become the first line on the screen. If you enter a number that is larger
- than the number of lines in the file, you will be placed on the last line of
- the file.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Go to a HEX address in the file being viewed
-
- To go to a HEX address in a file being viewed in HEX mode, press the <F6>
- key. You will then be asked to enter the address you wish to view. After
- entering this number, press the <Enter> key and the address requested
- will become the first line on the screen. If you enter an address that is
- larger than the size of the file, you will be placed on the last line of the
- file.
-
- Search for text in a file being viewed
-
- To search for text in a file being viewed, press the <F7> key. You will
- then be asked to select a form of data entry, either HEX or TEXT. Once
- you have chosen this, you will be asked for a search item with a maximum
- of 20 characters, entered as either a character string or as separate HEX
- values. When the text is located, it is placed on the top line of the
- display and is highlighted. Press the <Esc> key to cancel a search at any
- time.
-

- the upper left corner of the screen. Use the arrow keys to move around
- the screen. The <Home> key and <End> key will move you to the
- beginning and end of the current line, respectively. To change from the
- HEX to the ASCII column or from the ASCII back to the HEX column, press
- the <Tab> key. When you have finished the edit, press the <Esc> key.

- system, 'R' - read only, and 'A' - archive. By entering the appropriate
- letter, the current state of that attribute will be changed. You may enter
- any or all of these at the same time. If you have selected the 'SHOW

- have entered a 'Y' from the previous question, you are then asked to enter
- the number of lines to print on a page. If you press the <Enter> key
- without specifying a number of lines, page breaks will be suppressed. You
- will then be ask if you want to print a heading on the top of each page.
- Enter 'Y' to print the headings or 'N' to skip the headings. If you select
- to use PRINT.COM (described below), then no headings are available. If
- you select to print with no page breaks, then only the first page will have
- the heading. If a printer error occurs, the system will beep and alert
- you. You may abort printing the file(s) by pressing <Esc> at any time
- while the printer is running.
-
- QDISK will use PRINT.COM if it is loaded. This will allow you to print a
- list of files and then continue while they are printed in background.

- Show a Directory Tree of a disk drive ** LIMITED IN SHAREWARE
- VERSION **
-
- To show a visual map of your directory structure, select the 'TREE' option
- on the main menu. The data will be read from the disk and displayed.
- You may move around directories by using the four arrow keys, the
- <Home> key, the <End> key, the <PgUp> key, the <PgDn> key, the
- <Ctrl-Up> key, and the <Ctrl-Dn> key. You also may select a directory by
- typing the first letter of the directory name. The highlighted bar will be
- moved to the next directory in the tree that starts with the letter entered.
- The tree image is kept in memory. QDISK attempts to monitor DOS and see
- if any directories have been created or removed since the last time the
- tree was read. Therefore the directory does not have to be read from the
- disk each time you access it. If however, you feel that the directory tree
- shown to you is in error, press the <F1> key and the tree will be re-read.
- To view a directory shown on the tree, press the <Enter> key with the
- highlighted bar on the directory you wish to view. To change drives while
- in the tree, press the <F10> key. You will then be asked to enter the new
- drive letter. You do NOT need to press the <Enter> key after pressing the
- drive letter. To return to the main menu without changing your original
- directory, press the <Esc> key.
-
- ** NOTE **
-
- QDISK will keep a file containing the tree data in the same directory as
- you have specified for the help file. This is used so that you will not
- have to re-read the entire tree when you re-load QDISK after shutting off
- your computer. The directory tree may be updated, as stated above, by
- pressing the <F1> key.
-
- Set Default Destination Path
-
- To set the default destination path for the copy and move operations,
- select the 'DEST PATH' option on the dir sub-menu. You will then be
- asked for the new default destination path.(2) The path is shown on the
- top of the directory and the space available in that path is shown on the
- bottom of the directory.
-
- Toggle Destination Path with Current Dir
-
- To toggle the destination path and the current directory, select the
- 'TOGGLE PATH' option on the dir sub-menu. The two paths shown on the
- top of the directory listing will change places and you will be shown the
- contents of the old destination path.

- directories and no files. If you try to view a directory that has no
- matching files for the current file specification, the file specification will
- default back to '*.*'.
-
- Lock a Directory ** RETAIL VERSION ONLY **
-
- To lock a directory, select the 'LOCK' option on the dir sub-menu. The
- message "* Locked *" will appear in the upper left corner of the directory
- display. When a directory is locked, QDISK will remember where you are
- when you exit. The next time you activate QDISK, you will be returned to
- the locked directory. To unlock a directory, simply view either the "." file
- name or any other directory.
-
- Graft a Directory Structure ** RETAIL VERSION ONLY **

- To graft a directory and all of its sub-directories from one location to
- another, select the 'TREE' option on the main menu. Once you are there,
- position the highlighted bar to the directory you wish to graft and press
- the <F2> key. You are then allowed to select the directory in the tree
- to graft onto. If this is on another disk drive, press the <F10> key and
- enter the drive letter. The tree for that drive will be shown. Then select
- the directory to graft onto. Once you have done this, the directories and
- all of their files will be moved from the source to the destination.
-

- either side with the arrow keys.
-
- Switch text Formatting option ** LIMITED IN SHAREWARE VERSION **
-
- To switch the text formatting option, select the 'TEXT FORMAT' option on
- the config sub-menu. You will then be placed in the text format sub-menu.
- There are SIX options: RAW, TEXT, HEX, ARC, AUTO and ZIP. In the 'TEXT'
- mode, carriage returns and tabs are used to format the text. The 'RAW'
- and 'HEX' options allow you to view a file showing all of the control
- characters. In the 'RAW' mode, all tabs and control characters are shown
- as ASCII characters and the text shown is 80 characters per line, 25 lines
- per screen. In the 'HEX' mode, the file is shown like a DEBUG dump,
- including the 'HEX' addresses in the file to the left of the screen. This
- option is useful for looking at a COM or EXE file. You must be in 'HEX'
- mode for the 'HEX' editor to be used. The 'ARC' mode is used to look at
- the contents of "ARC" files. These are files which have been compressed
- using one of many "ARCing" programs available on the market. When you
- view these files, a list of the contents is shown rather than the actual
- compressed data. The 'ZIP' mode is used to look at the contents of "ZIP"
- files. These files are similar to ARC files but have been compressed in a
- different format. When you view these files, a list of the contents is
- shown rather than the actual compressed data. The 'AUTO' mode is a
- special command mode. In this mode, the file extension will decide the
- format in which you view the file. The extensions used are set in the
- installation program. (See "Installation Instructions" for a full description
- of the 'AUTO' mode and how to set the extensions.)
-
- Sort directory display by Name, Ext, Size, Date or Attribute
-
- To change the sort order of the directory (in the display only), select the
- 'SORT' option on the main menu. You may then choose one of the following
- options on the sort sub-menu: 'EXT' for extension/name, 'NAME' for
- name/extension, 'SIZE' for size, 'DATE' for date/time, 'ATTR' for attribute,
- or 'UNSORT' for un-sort. Un-sort will re-read the directory from the disk
- and show the files in the order as they appear on the disk drive. There
- is also an option to reverse the sort order. To access this feature, select
- the 'REVERSE' option. The order will be reversed if there is an arrow
- pointing to the word "Reverse."
-
- Show Attributes or Time
-
- You may show either the file's attributes or the file's time in the directory
- listing. To change the one that is shown, select the 'SHOW ATTR' option

- attributes were showing, the times will appear and vice versa.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Size the QDISK Window
-
- To change the size and location of the QDISK window, select the 'SIZE
- WINDOW' option on the config sub-menu. You may then move the top line,
- bottom line, or the entire window by selecting the <F1>, <F2>, or <F3> keys
- respectively. Use the <up> and <down> arrow keys to move the selected
- line(s). To exit this option, press the <Esc> key. If you are using QDISK
- on an EGA of VGA monitor and have the screen mode set to 43 or 50 lines
- per screen, you may enlarge the window to this size. If you then set the
- monitor back to 25 line mode, QDISK will adjust the bottom of the window
- to fit the new screen size.Command Line Switches
-
- Command Format
-
- The following is the format for the QDISK command line:
-
- QDISK [switches]
-
- The switches are described in this section and may be separated by any
- number of spaces.
-
- Windows 3.0 / Desqview ** RETAIL VERSION ONLY **
-
- To make QDISK work properly in Windows 3.0 and Desqview, place a /Q
- switch on the command line. Provided on your distribution diskette is a
- DVP file for DesqView and a both the PIF and ICO file for Windows. This
- switch is already specified in these files.
-
- ** NOTE **
-
- Do not attempt to use either of the two following switches if
- you plan to load QDISK prior to your network drivers.
-
- Small shell mode (Disk Option) ** RETAIL VERSION ONLY **
-
- To make QDISK run in the small shell mode, require only 4K of RAM, and
- store the needed data on disk, place a "/D" on the command line. This will
- cause QDISK to keep most of its code on your disk drive. When you need
- to use QDISK, the program will be loaded from the disk. This will work
- even when you are in another program. The pop-up time will be
- dependent on the speed of your disk.
-
- Small shell mode (Extended Memory) ** RETAIL VERSION ONLY **
-
- To make QDISK run in the small shell mode, require only 4K of RAM, and
- store the needed data in Extended Memory, place a "/X" on the command
- line. (You MUST have the program HIMEM.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS file for
- this option to work!) This will cause QDISK to keep most of its code in
- Extended Memory, which will lower your available Extended Memory by
- 128K. When you need to use QDISK, the program will be loaded from
- Extended Memory. This will work even when you are in another program.
- The pop-up time will be almost as fast as loading the program from normal
- DOS RAM.
-
- Set the buffer sizes for memory usage ** RETAIL VERSION ONLY **
-
- To change the buffer sizes used by QDISK, add one or both of the
- following options to the command line:
-
- /F:nnn
-
- nnn is the maximum number of files you will have in any one directory.
- The default number of files is 400. Each entry in the directory requires
- 21 bytes. The minimum number of files is 21.
-
- /C:nn
-
- nn is the number of 1K (1024 bytes) buffers you wish to have for the copy
- and view options. The default for this is 8K. If you specify too much or
- too little memory, the default will override the specified amount. The
- minimum amount of memory for this buffer is 4K.
-
- Run from command line as non-TSR program
-
- To run QDISK as a non-TSR program, place a "/@" on the command line.
-
- This will load QDISK in the current directory. It will then function as
- usual, with the exception that when exited, it will not remain in memory.
- You must run it each time you wish to use it.
-
- ** NOTE **
-
- If you have installed QDISK in a default NON-TSR MODE in the
- installation program, this switch will install it as a TSR.
-
- Uninstall QDISK
-
- To uninstall QDISK, place a "/U" on the command line. If QDISK was the
- last memory-resident program loaded, it will then be removed from memory.
- If QDISK was not the last memory-resident program loaded then an error
- message will be displayed stating the reason for its failure to uninstall.
-
- Change the QDISK hot keys
-
- To change the hot keys from <Alt> <Tab> and <Alt> <Left-Shift>, place
- either or both of the following commands on the command line as follows:
-
- /K=?
-
- The ? is one of the following characters:
-
- ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ , . / \ <Tab> and <Space>
-
- The above command will change the <Alt> <Tab> combination to <Alt> and
- the selected character.
-
- OR
-
- /H:12
-
- Where 1 and 2 may be any of the following:
-
- A - for the <Alt> key
- C - for the <Ctrl> key
- L - for the <Left-Shift> key
- R - for the <Right-Shift> key
-
- The above command will change the <Alt> <Left-Shift> combination.
-
- Set EGA and VGA options
-
- If you are running an EGA or VGA monitor, using it in 43 or 50 line mode,
- and are placing the QDISK window into the lower 25 lines of your screen,
- you must set this option so that QDISK will save the entire screen's data
- when it is activated. The format for this option is as follows:
-
- /V:E
-
- This option will require an extra 4K of memory for the additional screen
- data to be saved.Installation Instructions
-

- type "QUNDEL" and press the <Enter> key and you will be asked for the
- file name to un-erase, or you may type "QUNDEL filename" and press the
- <Enter> key and the file will be un-erased. The file name may contain a
- full DOS path but will not accept wildcards.
-
- QCLOCK ** RETAIL VERSION ONLY **
-
- To place a clock in the upper right corner of your video display, run the
- program QCLOCK. This is a QDISK compatible clock program.
-
- QMOUSE ** RETAIL VERSION ONLY **
-
- There is an optional mouse interface program provided with QDISK, called
- QMOUSE. To use this option, simply run QMOUSE from the DOS prompt or
- your AUTOEXEC.BAT file prior to loading QDISK. There are 2 optional
- parameters available to be used with QMOUSE. They are the speed and
- keycode parameters. To use the keycode parameter, you MUST use the
- speed parameter; however the reverse is not true. The SPEED parameter
- is an adjustment to the speed at which the mouse moves the cursor. The
- range is from 1 to 9 with 1 being fastest. The KEYCODE parameter allows
- you to change the values returned from each mouse click. Valid values are
- /L1=XXXX /L2=XXXX and /R1=XXXX where XXXX is the HEX scan code for
- the key you wish to have returned. L1 = 1 click on the left button. L2 =
- 2 clicks on the left button, R1 = 1 click on the right button. The defaults
- are L1 = Enter, L2 = Tab (Menu Access) and R1 = Escape.Footnotes
-
- 1 - If you are operating on a group of marked files, you do not have to
- place the highlighted bar on any specific file. See "Mark a file for
- multiple operators" for further instructions on how to mark a group
- of files.
-
- 2 - At these prompts, you may press the <F10> key and use the directory
- tree to select a directory or drive rather than typing in the
- requested data.
-
- 3 - If a double arrow appears prior to the word in the menu, the option
- is "ON". If there is no double arrow, the option is "OFF".
- Other Notes
-
- Directories are ignored during Multiple Operator (M/O) commands even if
- they have been marked. You may only perform functions on directories
- one at a time.
-
- If you have any marked files and you press the <Esc> key to exit the
- program, you will still have those files marked when you re-start the
- program. This is equivalent to locking a directory and is true only if the
- program is in TSR mode.
-
- The on-screen clock will appear to stop working during heavy disk or
- printer usage so that these functions will not slow down. When you are
- in the QDISK main menu, the system will beep on the hour.
-
- If you have any problems or any suggestions for future additions to this
- program, please send them to the address below.
